That painting is one of my favorite peices of art in all the world. The first time I saw it, I didn't know about the marks on the floor that show you where the best vantage points are. As I stared up at the ceiling, a little old Italian docent who spoke no English came over to me, smiled, took my arm, led me to the little ring in the floor and pointed up at the ceiling. When I looked back at the ceiling, I was utterly stunned. From that spot you literally cannot tell where the walls stop unless you look really closely. Many of the painted human figures almost look like statues hanging from the ceiling from that vantage as well. It's the most impressive and surprising piece of art I've ever seen. Also, the little old docent dude started laughing at me when I went all slack jawed and gobsmacked, which was really funny at the time. Sweet old dude.

Creating a 3D painting on a 2D surface with such perfection is itself a divine intervention.

Chapeau bas. Brilliant analysis that moves from the analysis of art to questions of the meaning of life.

Even the figures are in perspective going up or looking down on us. Andrea Pozzo should be spoken in the same breathe as Michaelangelo. If given the chance I'd go see the Sistine Chapel because it's famous, but I'd go to St. Ignatius to see this to be overwhelmed.

In my opinion i find it more impressive than Michelangelo's Sistine chapel frescos. But i have the feeling that it is forgotten.

Possibly inspired by the Sistine chapel by Michelangelo?

Why is the Sistine Chapel so famous? This blows it out of the water and it's the first time I've ever heard about it.
@yovanikcalderon76226 жыл бұрын
Johnny Threefour because Michaelangelo is a more famous artist and his painting portraits the creation of man and it's also located in the Vatican. I agree with you pozzo's painting is way better than sistine but sistine haz more value and it's much older piece

The Pozzo work is spectacular, but Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel frescoes have a far deeper meaning.

The Sistine chapel was painted earlier ( it most probably inspired this work too- that might be why it is so famous...)

"Miraculous" is a great way to describe this. How gorgeous. How do you do this in general, much less to a ceiling?! Love the inclusivity of the "four great continents" - that's a new idea, from what I've seen thus far. "Even God is full of movement" was funny. He's not the sedentary type, if I understand Him properly. 😋 This is incredible, though. Another one for the "I hope to see it someday" list.

i remember reading about this breathtaking art work in a book i bought at a jumble sale and paid less than one uk pound for it, and was blown away , i read that the dark black dome, that you can see on the ceiling is also painted its not actually there. i hope i can see this one day, also how would you suggest i go about learning more about the terms and meanings of certain art language as im kinda new to this, i find reading books difficult believe it or not as retention for me is always an issue any help is appreciated thanks

Not being a fan of church art, I have to say it is quite stunning the illusion and the symbolism ... and as one who's highly skeptical of the missionary zeal of religion, quite frightening as well. Aesthetically impressive.

We were speak quietly out of respect because we recorded this in the Sant'Ignazio, a church that was being used for prayer and contemplation as Churches so often are.

This ceiling has to be compared with the ceiling at nearby Il Gesu. Smarthistory has a great video on that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmendXdth9GFmqc I actually like Il Gesu more because it has more panel extensions that blur the line between architectural elements and painting. But even at St Ignatius, there are a few places where you can see Pozzo has painted some flowing fabric from an angel onto window frames, etc
