Let's petition to have Meagan as one of our boys' vocal coaches! I'm in no position to critic their performance here because I'm no pro, but I do sing and was a choir member. So thank you very much for taking time to do this for everyone. I noticed that sometimes Sejun pronounces his vowels differently that I wasn't sure if it's just his style (like his ā or ō may sound like ŭ). After watching this, I realized you were right about the way he opens his mouth, w/c could also be because of his braces getting in the way. Despite of some flaws, we would still agree that this is a very impressive performance and I could listen to their harmonization all day.

Michael Pangilinan really made this song quite difficult to cover haha, anyways I really loved your analysis and these boys will definitely improve in time. They could’ve just arranged this song where Stell and Sejun would cover most of the song, but I guess Sejun wants everyone to have a part and expose them more to technically difficult songs for them to improve.

Whoa! Did I just get a free voice lesson?! Wew! Thank you so much for this wonderful treat Meg! I'm a music teacher, too and some of the lessons I teach are revolving around Pinoy music styles and developments and I actually noticed some of the aspects you also noticed. At least, I could tell myself that I'm learning to listen to musical technicalities more. Props to you for sharing your honesty and expertise. 😊 Just a thought though... Maybe one factor why the boys struggled at some points of the cover was exhaustion from their other MYX performances. I mean, they also did all the singing and dancing for Go Up and Alab, plus an all-out performance of Tilaluha; hence, they may be a little tired by the time they sang Bakit Ba Ikaw. I was just assuming that maybe the other numbers were recorded first before this song so such could have affected the boys' overall performance. Well, if my assumptions are wrong, maybe their nerves performing it live could have had an effect, too. Nevertheless, I do hope the boys would consider your points and suggestions for they have lots of room for improvement! Lucky us that we have someone like you (insert Brianna,too) who shows genuine care and humble hopes for the career of our boys! God bless. 😊
@hoshiiikodan4 жыл бұрын
Actually what I thought too...You kind of see here how they struggle to sing. Even Stell just pushed to that growl on his line just to go through that. They were more relaxed on Inqpop and ChicKEN's voice really shines on that video. The only problem on that is you can't quite hear the harmonies because of the microphones. Sejun also harmonized on Josh part on that but the microphone wasn't mixed well (i mean the sound) that it ended up not quite audible. Sorry if I just spilled my nerdy juices right here hahaha Nevertheless, in whatsoever reasons, they still did very well on that performance 😊.

Most Filipino vocalists do not have professional training. Most learn from listening. And then the techniques are just refined when they become professional singers and company would give them vocal coaches. But really, vocal coaching is not really big here in the Philippines. Its a luxury only previleged can afford. You would only see very few to non in a city. Having said that, I think Stell learnt most of his techniques via listening to other vocalists. :)
@mountainblanc32004 жыл бұрын
This I have to agree, very few singers here receive vocal coaching, most of us learn to sing and play with our voices at a very young age, and trying our best to hit high notes which in the Philippines is a must. I received singing lessons in grade school though I really never paid much attention to it, but those vocal exercises really help, and based on their most recent interview, Josh mentioned that they do a lot of vocal exercises.

Stell received some vocal training when he was in high school, I believe. And yes, I hope the members continuously receive vocal training, not just to refine their voices but also to keep their vocal chords healthy. Singing using bad techniques can really harm them and consequently ruin a singer's career

I remembered that Stell mention once on an interview before that when he was a kid, he was actually a part of church choir and he is the only male that belongs on the soprano line. Maybe his vocal abilities were developed their plus the fact that his musical influences are the legendary singers here in the Philippines. One of them is Regine Velasquez.

Meagan, this was the first complete and objective vocal analysis I've ever watched on KZbin, and I was honestly nervous that A'TIN would get defensive and put down what you had to say. But you obviously know what you're talking about, and I'm glad everyone enjoyed and is learning things about vocal technique along the way. 😁 Props to you! As a vocal performer myself, I very much enjoyed this, as I found myself analyzing their voices, too, after watching the first few times. Spot on with your comments. 👌 I tried to cover this myself on a singing app (with the rap and all, haha), and like most Filipino ballads by tenors, this song is difficult for me as a full solo. Aside from it being pop, which is a different technique than what my chorister self is used to singing, it's a constant going up and down the scale which can get tiring if you're not set on the breathing technique with getting on and off the phrases. Michael Pangilinan makes it look way too easy. That being said, SB19 made a beautiful harmonized version where each of them had a part that fit to their individual strengths. I just wanna add something that I thought you'd appreciate: While the camera focuses on Stell, giving him the spotlight with his glorious falsetto descant after the modulation, Ken's coming in belting "BAAAKIT BA IKAW" than ever before and leans flat for a little soul on the "maiisip ko AT" before ending it with a melisma on "pa." Then Justin hits a G# on "puSO" before going back to the original melody (which, IMO, is hard to do given the jump back down!), and I just die. 😭

This is one of the most entertaining vocal reactions I've watched so far. I really enjoyed it and loved how I also get to understand what you were talking about. I do sing myself, just not as professionally, so I'm very grateful to learn because of how you really tried to explain everything simple. And I also wanna talk about the braces. I had them and I can say it's really difficult to sing with them. There are instances that I kinda and do sound like I have a lisp. And since the brackets are kind of thick, it causes that awkward gap between the lips and gums. Thus, the wider preference to open our mouth instead of downwards. Another is that it causes, for some imcluding me, locked jaws. So I was really happy when I took them off. But having retainers on afterwards are much more difficult. The toungue is forced backwards and you have to open up a bit more in order to have that upper space the retainers took. And that more is another anxiety since there's a possibility of locked-jaw afterwards if not careful. So, yeah. But I really admire those who could still sing beautifully with these annoying devices on. Anyways, thank you so much for making this video. I'm looking forward to more uploads. I hope you and Brianna are both doing well. Take care always!

Not a vocalist, but I've been working with singers for years as an instrumentalist-- I think at the beginning of Justin's part, he was also very nervous, he slipped on some words (mispronounced) as well and did notes that wasn't in the original song. He's not a starter, in the Philippines we have an intimate understanding of people who would rather sing in a chorus and which people are more confident in doing a solo- maybe for now Justin's still finding his confidence in doing his solos, but he definitely is hardworking! We've seen him improve so much over time.

sb19 has a long standing of more than 4 years of rigid training systems under korean entertainment agency and up until now, they still consider themselves neophytes in everything, that's their mindset. under korean system, vocal analogy being applied to trainees are different from what american or European vocal analogy, they simply don't follow that path. so no matter what vocal reviews they get, they're always low profile and keep everything from limelight of what they really do as per every performances technically. this is how I see a high professionalism and standard in this group.

I really really love this vocal analysis. It's very informative. I also love to sing and people say I sound good but I know there are pitch and breathing problems whenever I sing. Maybe they just don't want to point it out. I want to learn the techniques to properly sing well but I just don't know how to start. I think getting professional vocal teacher is too much since I'm not joining any competition, I just want to sing really well. This is a great video, like a glimpse of what a proper vocal training is. On SB19 side, I know they have vocal trainers but I think they are Koreans. ShowBT should hire a Filipino vocal coach. Though their Korean vocal coaches are good, there is still a language barrier and it's hard to teach and learn technical stuff if they don't understand each other fully. It will feel more natural and easier if your coach speaks your language. Also, I wish that the management will give them time to attend to thorough vocal trainings. They are really busy these days but they should still put it in their schedule. THANK YOU MEAGAN!!!💎💙

This girl has swag (though not as prominent as KZ Tandingan) and a great voice. Have a listen to her covers. I pray that in the future, SB19 could do an R&B collab with Ry&Co. I'd like to hear an original composition with Sejun and Josh doing rap verses and Ken, Ry doing verses with Justin and Stell doing the harmonies all the while with Ken and Ry's partner on acoustic guitars and Stell on the beat box. That would be a great song. Anyway, I hope you do get to see their videos and I look forward to your next vocal analysis of our fav Pinoy boy band. More power to you.

You might wanna hear the original version sung by Michael Pangilinan. :)

I second this! Michael Pangilinan's Wish Bus version is practically untouchable. @Meagan -- you'll find out that the second verse was swapped out by Sejun for the rap. Michael's original actually has a second verse. 😁

I hate doing this on videos that aren’t about DREAMCATCHER but since the highlight melodies came out for their new album I HIGHLY recommend watching it. I’m already so excited for the album release and the melody highlight just made it sooo much more interesting!

According to Tito Jun(Stell's father, tito=Uncle) Stell's grandma(mother side i think) had a neighbor Vocal coach and that person was the one who taught/trained Stell. Stell's grandma was the one who had arrange a vocal coach for him.
