This video is one of the best explanations of holster styles I’ve ever seen. Very good info for people new to CC. I’ve tried explaining this to friends but I think I’ll save this vid and just share it instead. The only thing I preach that he didn’t cover is the pros/cons of the different materials.

Definitely not a negative comment. You can’t cover everything and you did an excellent job on it. A quick clip talking about leather and nylon would suffice. Biggest mistake of first time CC…they buy the stupid nylon holster. Speaking from experience.

Great video. Safariland holsters are some of the best. I used to know the original owner when he was my neighbor back in Monrovia, CA.

As far as sweat guards go I never noticed or cared about it until I started doing physical labor while carrying aiwb. My usual carry has a mid height sweat guard and the slide serrations cut my stomach up a little bit after 10-12 hours of hard labor. Im 170 at 5'11" n not fat but two days of repairing a cabin and I had some abrasions on my stomach. Switched to a high sweat guard n it solved that problem. I'll only buy holsters with a high sweat guard from here on out.

Very informative video. I have been shooting for a long time, but was confused by some of the terms used by holster manufacturers. I definitely learned some good stuff watching the video.

After many years of mostly IWB and some OWB carry of a 1911, I added a Rugger LC9S for summer carry which eventually became year round carry. Recently I added a Sig M-17 and retired the 1911. I then fell into new Rabbit-Holes looking for IWB and Appendix Carry holsters for the M-17. It's a Canon compared to the Rugger. It's not as heavy as the 1911, loaded or unloaded (17/21+1 vs 7/8+1), and it's somewhat more difficult to carry concealed than the narrow/flat sided 1911, which BTW is a work of art by John Browning. I love that pistol but its limited round count limits its relevance in today's troubled society. Today the Sig is loaded with 17+1 Hornady Critical Duty 124 Gr +P rounds with 21 round reload mags. Originally, I was going to carry the SIG as my EDC but because of my difficulty in carrying it in a IWB holster on my frame, I've decided to continue carrying the LC9S as my EDC and continue looking/evaluating Appendix and Under-Garment Shoulder Holsters for the Sig. BTW: I'm close to selecting an OWB holster for the Sig in addition to a Tactical Belt/Duty Holster for SHTF scenarios. Getting down to Brass Tacks. Even though I knew some of this stuff beforehand, this vid added MUCHO GRANDE Stuffs to the Old Grey Cells. HATS OFF the the Presenter and whoever helped put this together. Well Presented, Well Produced and Well Worth the Time to watch the entire VID. I've saved the link and intend to reference it as my searches/ponderings continue and I just subbed. JOB WELL DONE SIR......

Do you think claws and wedges slow down your draw from having the gun so close to your body? Your belt selection is just as important as the holster I'd add. Very thorough guide Miles, thanks!

Good info Myles. I do use Kydex holsters for concealed carry, but I am also a big fan of leather, “pancake” holsters (OWB). For example, I have a pancake holster for my 1911 that is excellent because it holds a fairly heavy gun up close to my body (little to no printing), and it has an inside Thumb Break for added retention which I really like. Another little benefit is leather holsters are usually very quiet, compared the the clunky plastic sounds made when drawing from or re-holstering with Kydex holsters. Just some food for thought.

No worries! I know leather is kind of considered Old School these days. No one material or style is perfect, just wanted to toss that out there.

New to pistols, so this video is very informative. I am left handed when it comes to shooting. Are there left and right handed holsters? Really need an answer to this before I go look at holsters. Also, I noticed in comments of people inquiring about leather holsters. Are they better or worse than the plastic looking holsters in the video, as far as retention, draw, and comfort?

PSA for my ruggedly hairy guys. Sweat guards are also great fur guards. As a classically hairy guy who carries appendix, the larger the sweat guard the less hair i rip out when reholstering. I cannot even tell you how many toupes or merkins could have been made with all the hair I've lost.

The best concealed carry holster, as far as accessing your weapon in an emergency, is an external holster. On your hip.

Ok I get all the CC stuff but I'm looking for a good solution for a tactical holster set up. One that is simple and lightweight, and does anyone know any good set ups that work well with groovebelts? A drop set up specifically, I don't want to interfere with armor, I've been wanting to replace the bulky and sloppy universal I use ..

BTW, Do NOT buy a Blackhawk SERPA holster. They were recalled and banned by the LAPD. There is a very good chance that their design and retention device may lead to a negligent discharge.

Only for OWB in my opinion. Most don’t stay open for reholstering and can catch the trigger when you’re reholstering. I wish he’d covered it though.

Easy to reholster with Kydex. But I've seen alot of wear on my 1911s. I think I'm going back to leather. More things to sell on Ebay.
