As a self taught one man band it’s nice to listen to other shop owners talk shop.

Great Pod! I'm a small machine shop owner and can relate to so many of your issues. It was nice knowing I'm not the only one going through these things.

Our company too has to do some old castings. We did some work for Boeing and when I suggested that we machine the casting drawing out of solid stock and then complete the finish machining drawing from that casting. They told me that would be considered a counterfeit part. So it's been actual investment castings that eat our lunch and then machining.

HSS is actually able to get sharper than carbide. UHMW especially HSS works better than carbide. For all other plastics a YG1 alupower is the best I've found; with the helix angle mentioned.

Downcut mills are a staple in the woodworking cnc world. Also, there are compression mills that will upcut on a small section at the tip and downcut on the rest of it. The idea is you get no chipping on the edges. Again, a staple in woodworking, but should give you minimal burrs both top and bottom on full depth contour operations.

We have Blum probe and laser. You can load a bunch of tools then run a program that will cycle through them and run them through the laser for tool pick up.

Renishaw can do similar, probably not as fast or accurate as a laser.

Man, I wish I worked for you guys. Yall seem to value an employee who wants to better the shop. Idea after idea I have shot down by management until all hell breaks loose and now somebody in management has a great idea they totally came up with on their own. Several instances of asking my employer to buy us a tool or do this or that, only to have it be done later aftwe being told I was dumb.

Sounds like you need to move shops, man. Nobody needs to put up with that garbage.

I've ran down cut mills on aluminum since it would pull out of the fixture or the boar would be out of round . since could not hold tight enough to keep it in the fixture .

UHMWPE… Isn’t that what the devils condoms are made from? 😂 I deal with it plenty in medical. Milling it’s fine, drilling sucks, turning sucks. Deburring it really sucks.
