I’ve been learning guitar just over 2 years, - 747 days to be precise, and have not missed a single day of practice! I remember the very first day I got my first guitar, googling Beginner Guitar Lesson, and Marty’s “Your Very First Guitar Lesson” was the first lesson I ever took. E minor and A minor sus 2 I believe. Keep up the great work Marty and Lindsay!

No such thing as an A minor sus2- just A sus2. The sus 2 implies there is no 3rd being played to determine whether its major or minor. But nice man!

Joe is right with both Marty & Justin. The only downside to KZbin lessons is the lack of interaction. The challenges as a beginner can be how you position your thumb on the neck, learning to position your elbow and wrist to maximize your flexibility to reach notes, and things like that. If you find yourself struggling with these things, catch a local instructor with no long term commitments or hit me up and we can do a live video session to help you overcome the obstacles we all face starting out on this beautiful instrument.

I am a lefty playing right hand guitar (it just feels comfortable that way) so I have to work harder at rhythm and speed of my picking hand. I found chromatic picking exercises really useful. I just had a revelation with my alternate picking on this by simply doing it with my eyes closed and focusing on my picking hand. Huge difference! I would recommend giving it a try.

The interesting thing about this first exercise is that Lindsey uses the downstroke exclusively from the 6th string to the 1st, and exclusively uses the upstroke going back from 1st to 6th string. I've seen people do alternate picking from start to finish, but never picking like this. Cool. I will have to try that. ELL YEAH!!!

Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice and patience makes perfect. These are the types of lessons that are vital to take to heart if you want to accomplish your playing goals. I can tell you first hand when I took the guitar up as a teenager many moons ago I wanted to go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds and be playing every solo from Live at The Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers without putting the work in and I stopped playing because I got frustrated and I stunk. I picked my guitar back up 40 years later and have been putting the work in and what a surprise I am not half bad. It's like Daniel in The Karate Kid wax on wax off, you don't get it at first but then the light goes on one day when you apply it. Thanks for the practice tips!

Spot on. In my mother tongue ( Bemba) I am from northern Zambia. There's a saying that: "There is no such a thing as PRACTICE makes perfect BUT that PRACTICE reduces MEDIOCRE" For those that want to be sarcastic with you, will end the saying by saying..." Show me a professional person who's never made a mistake and I will kiss your a$&. We all error at some point in life" They would say.

AMEN! So many of my students want to play evolved songs out of the gate or will ask "How long before I can play songs like this?" It's a blast when you can tell the light bulb has turned on and they get how the focus on technique has moved them faster toward learning any song, not just one.
