Which of these sentences are correct: Are you always daydreaming or imagining a world of possibilities? OR Do you always daydream or imagine a world of possibilities? Personally, I prefer to use the continuous for this sentence, but is it wrong to use the simple tense? What is the difference?
@sjmb79676 жыл бұрын
Simple Present is used when we are talking about routine, facts and permanent situations. Simple continuous is used when you are talking about something that is happening now, changing of state and temporary situations. Thanks teacher for this awesome lesson.

Thank you, Paul! Very helpful as usual:) When it comes to me, while watching movies, I've noticed one more situation, when Present Continuous is likely to be used. "You are not wearing that outfit (a skirt).It's way too short", "You are not giving a speech", "You are not quitting soccer" and so on. As far as I understand, we use this tense when we want to prohibit something in a strict manner. Is it true?)
@PracticeEnglishwithPaul9 жыл бұрын
Ирина Владыкина Hi Irina:) Glad to see you here :) You are absolutely correct. We can use the present continuous for demands and refusals: "You are not going outside wearing that!" I plan to cover this as it comes under present cont. for the future. I did a short basic video on comparing pres simp. and cont. for future aspects but i want to do a video that goes in depth in all future uses including the point you mentioned. You are a star!!!!!

Irina, you are spot on! We use it all the time like you mentioned! So if i say: 'you're not doing your homework' using forceful intonation, then yes, I am saying: you're not allowed)

Excellent observation and , as Paul said, you're spot on ( right on target ) 👌💯

I keep stumbling across present progressive uses that I can't explain. Example (from Longman Dictionary): "Sticking to a healthy diet always makes you feel that you're missing out". Missing out? Why the present continuous? "Missing out" right now? "Missing out" temporally around the time of speaking? Prearranged? Near future?
@ruthnosurname-fw6ur11 ай бұрын
thank you so much! your manner of explaining is so charming☀️

The present continuous can also be used to complain about a habit (a habit that is unpleasant or annoying to the speaker). Typically, the word 'always' (or sometimes a similar word) is also used in the sentence. "My teacher is always accusing me of making hamster and cheese sandwiches which I don't actually do". "My bit on the side is forever running out of patience every time I go camping with me trouble and strife".
@adelker4884 Жыл бұрын
Excellent point👌💯, but I don't understand your second example ( My bit....).

Is "Nothing else matters" a permanent condition? So we have to use "matters" instead of "matter"?
@adelker4884 Жыл бұрын
The s in "matters" has nothing to do with whether or not the action is permanent. It's simply added because "nothing" is a third person singular and we're using the present simple tense.

Sir, I have read two sentences saying 1 " I have been teaching English since 2010" Here is the another one I have been teaching 10000 students since 2010 The first one is correct n the reason my teacher told me is I haven't 10000 student to teach the other student after I have taught one. I take some time and then I teach students. BT he says the scnd sentence is correct. Don't u thnk he is also taking time like he eats something n do works he has. So how is it countinous

Not sure how “the phone is ringing right now” is an advanced point. It’s the 1st thing you learn about PrC
@adelker4884 Жыл бұрын
He's saying that some students would say," The phone rings." Then he goes on to explain WHY that wouldn't be correct and explains the need to use the present continuous in that case.

I think it also makes sense when you say 'I write a book' in a meaning that it is my habbit to write a book in the evenings, but then again without a context it sounds weird. Do you agree?
@manojsoni50163 жыл бұрын
I wonder why someone has not agreed yet while the point being 100% agreeable. India
@adelker4884 Жыл бұрын
@4ty5 You're right about the lack of a context in that example. As Paul said, a time expression is essential. Your sentence would be correct if, for example, said:" I write a book every time I'm on vacation."
