This is the greatest Portuguese lesson I have ever listened to!! Amazing. You guys are brilliant. Seriously, this was really fun and very useful. The acting was beautiful and pretty much how things really play out in shops when you walk in and try to speak Portuguese. Thanks so much for this.

This is brilliant. I don't think I've ever seen a video about this topic before but it's one of the most dispiriting things about trying to speak another language. Your first instinct is always that what you said must have been completely incomprehensible to them and it kills your confidence but I'm sure they're just trying to be helpful. I'm definitely going to try this approach next time I go to Portugal. Muito obrigado.

Why is there a grave accent on the "a" in "estou à procura" at around 0:29 seconds in?

Great question. That happens when 2 a's are contracted together. Estou *a* + *a* procura. The a's from both of those sentence fragments are contracted to form à. (More details here: www.practiceportuguese.com/learning-notes/the-preposition-a/) It is the same pronunciation as the accent in the other direction, á. That sound is also the most open Portuguese "a" vowel. (More details on open/medium/closed vowels here: www.practiceportuguese.com/videos/words/) Hope that helps and obrigado :)

My confusion was because I misinterpreted the word "procura" as a verb, in which case I guess the correct phrase should be "estou a procurar" (with the "a" without an accent and the verb in infinitivo). Apparently in this instance, "procura" is intended to be a noun, and the phrase "a procura" means "in search (of)", não é? Thus estar a + a procura -> estar à procura=to be in search of. Está correto? Muito obrigado pela ajuda e estes vídeos.

Na verdade isto acontece-me muitas vezes em Portugal. Eu tento sempre falar em português, mas se a pessoa é simpática não me importa falar um pouco em português e também em inglês. The first verb "tentar" is in the future of the subjunctive. The second one "vou saber" is just a compound future form, you could use the future simple "saberei" there as well (although it would sound a bit more formal).

Nosso charme no Rio de Janeiro é falar chiado, que herdamos dos portugueses, pois a família real se estabeleceu aqui; todos acham lindo. Mas vocês falam 20 vezes mais carregado, é um CHIADÊS!!!! 😄 Ao lado de um lusitano parece que um carioca nem chia nada 😄 Outra coisa bem marcante na diferença é o R entre vogais.
