I live in Central Portugal, I have come from Australia. My Portuguese language skills are not good. The Portuguese language for myself is so very different, it can be quite overwhelming. However the Portuguese people are so accommodating, especially if you try to speak the language. What you see is what you get, the people are genuine, caring, sharing and straight up helpful. In my opinion, the Portuguese are much more than simpatico.

Love this video! Yes, I have found the Portuguese to be friendly and above all kind. I have been traveling to Portugal for 17 years. My overall experience has been very positive. It may take a little longer for people to warm up but when you return to the same cafes, restaurants, stores, language schools a few times , you will receive that smile that will warm your heart. It may take a little longer for people to get to know you but you will find that they are sincere. I come from a city that is notorious for being reserved and so to me it's not unusual. I spend most of my time in Lisbon, which is one of if not my favorite city in the world. I have been to other cities as well and perhaps people there are a little more free to chit chat. I thorougly enjoy visiting other cities and towns of this great country but I am always so happy to return to Lisbon. Just got back from there two days ago and miss it already!

The Portuguese are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Sometimes foreigners tend to think we should behave like Latin Americans, forgetting we are from Atlantic Europe which makes us more reserved.

Onde quer que eu vá em Portugal, de Ponta Delgada ao Porto, de Lisboa a Quarteira, as pessoas são sempre simpáticas, prestáveis e amáveis. Não me lembro de um único português que alguma vez tenha sido mal-educado comigo. Nem sequer um.

Im going to share my honest experience of living in Portugal for almost 2 years and my experience of the Portuguese people. I have lived in Lisbon and now up north near Oporto. In general I have found the Portuguese reserved people. They are not unfriendly but also don’t come off as extremely warm individuals at first. People are polite and are tolerant of foreigners moving to their country. I have made the effort to learn Portuguese and I am now conversational and trying to make the effort to speak the language and learn it definitely makes a big difference. I have found that it takes time for people to warm up to people they don’t know but once they know you they are very hospitable and invite you into their homes. The region is very important aswell. Sometimes a matter of even 50kms people are different in their demeanors, as with any country. People further up north I find warmer and friendlier but that’s not to say I haven’t met people that are kind in Lisbon and further down south. I’m originally from South Africa and we are no strangers to multicultural society’s and so we tend to be very accepting of anyone because of that. Hence I like to believe that South Africans are some of the friendliest people in the world but my opinion is definitely biased and I think the correct people to ask would be individuals outside of the culture/foreigners living in our country. Overall Portugal has grown on me over the last 2 years and I have grown to really enjoy the country and culture as a whole although not easy at first.

The problem is that we are completely fed up with this massive illegal invasion and massive tourism 💩💩💩💩💩💩😡😡😡😡😡😡. We always where very kind to the foreigners but these abused our kindness, they think that we are here to please them as under people 😡😡😡😡😡😡 I am from Porto and I am completely fed up with this massive invasion and this 7:22 massive tourism is disgusting and unbearable 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

We used to be way more "simpáticos". Unfortunately, manners are changing but overall, I still think my people are quite kind-hearted and very nice. Maybe not at first; they don't know you, and they can be rather shy, however, in time you start seeing their human beauty shine. This being said, there are certain areas that are not as "nice". In my experience, I find the people in Lisbon to not be as nice as they used to. Same from certain areas of Ribatejo (1 hr NE or NW of Lisbon District) also the Setúbal area. They tend to be rather gruff, rough around the edges, as well as some people from the Aveiro (and up) region; Águeda, Sangalhos, Ílhavo, etc. Not to say Portuguese from those areas are all gruff, but those areas had quite a mix of Visigoths and Vandals in the V-VII century , as well as French and English troops that came over (many settled here) during the Napoleonic Invasions of Portugal. It is seen today not only the physical traits of many Portuguese living there, but also in the behavioral traits of the descendants. By far the nicestest of all Portuguese are the people from Minho and Porto, as well as our folks from the mid Atlantic Islands and ...our beloved Alentejanos. Overall, we are not perfect but are indeed a good bunch.

My honest oppinion, foreigners are disappointingly unfriendly. I work in an area where I constantly see foreigners, both tourists and those who are living in Lisbon, and most of them are not very friendly. They come by eyes on their mobiles or walking their dogs and can't be bothered even to say hello. That wasn't my experience some years ago. They used to be friendly and even interested in meeting the locals. Well, not anymore it seems.

Acho que são simpáticos, e os do Norte sao muito calorosos e acolhedores. Povo bom de coração. Eu posso falar com alguma propriedade, ja andei em muitos paises pelo mundo, e como brasileira, que é uma sociedade muito aberta e comunicativa, os portugueses e italianos sao muito próximos aos brasileiros, culturalmente falando.

Está explicado, a maioria dos portugueses que vieram para o Brasil são do norte de Portugal, há um artigo que diz que a maioria dos que foram para Minas Gerais é dessa região citada Minho. O mineiros são considerados o povo mais acolhedor do Brasil.

Nós portugueses no nosso melhor, somos, não só simpáticos e acolhedores, como também e se preciso fôr andamos aquela "extra mile" para ajudar o nosso próximo, como se dizia antigamente, tiramos até a nossa camisa para lha dar...no entanto... não podíamos ser perfeitos, certo? Então também temos a "famosa" "veia de água salôbra" que "ferve em pouca água" e é aí que ás vezes estragamos um pouco a nossa imagem. Mas, fora disso e se servir de contra-balanço, não somos de fingimentos, ou gostamos de verdade ou não, falsidade não é um dos nossos defeitos! Estamos em processo de evolução e gostamos de aprender sempre com quem é melhor do que nós, temos essa humildade. ❤

Porque é que “ferver em pouca água” é um defeito? Isso depende da situação… mas sabe que há muito boa gente que abusa da boa vontade do próximo. Simpáticos, humildes (QB honestamente), ajudamos etc tá tudo certo… mas calma lá… há que ter personalidade 😅 E acho que cada vez menos temos menos “saco” para tudo isso honestamente, e percebo que assim seja.

No entanto, eu por experiência de vida pelos (muitos) anos que já vivi, aprendi que "ferver em pouca água" não é bom, porque a maioria das vezes perdemos com isso, pois se esperássemos mais uns segundos, sabe, aquela técnica de contar até dez e respirar fundo e só então responder?...pois é, é muitíssimo útil. Podemos evitar muitos conflitos. Mas talvez isso só se adquira com a idade, não sei, pois também conheço muita gente jovem e ponderada!

"Infelizmente às vezes sinto que esse carinho não é recíproco" É! Infelizmente. E sabe porquê? Já viu algum vídeo de KZbinrs Brasileiros que conhecem ou vivem em Portugal? Aconselho a ver para verificar a causa que levou os Portugueses a embirrarem com grande parte dos Brasileiros que se mudaram para cá. Pelo menos nos últimos 10 anos só veio maioritariamente gente mais rasca possível. Parece que abriram o esgoto do Brasil. Começam por perguntar algo sem ao menos darem o "Bom dia / boa tarde/boa noite". Pensam que estão no Brasil em vez de se integrarem na cultura/usos e costumes do país que os acolhe. O que é divulgado sobre Portugal no Brasil? Qualquer peça televisiva ou filme é legendado, não fazem o menor esforço para ouvir e escutar por propósito de entender (to get tunned)... Temos novelas Brasileiras em todos os canais abertos de TV, sabemos as variantes do vocabulário e sabemos a métrica estrutural do Português aí usado e os Brasileiros não sabem que o Português PT não se rege pela mesma métrica. Sobre isso veja o canal YT " Portuguese with Leo" que é para estrangeiros pois os Brasileiros infelizmente são estrangeiros cá.

Os portugueses são às vezes demasiado nervosos e podem ser interventivos quando a situação não o exige nem permite.

As pessoas do norte são super calorosos, acolhedores e muito unidos. Na cidade do Porto as pessoas têm o coração perto da boca, nossas intervenções são cirúrgicas, não deixamos trepar. Falamos muito palavrão, mas é nossa cultura, nunca é no intuito de ofender as pessoas, é como se fosse uma virgula. Mas as pessoas do norte não são malcriadas e sem educação como muitas vezes querem e até nos rotulam como tal. Jamais trocaria a cidade do Porto por outra cidade, o sangue corre e ferve nas veias. Viva o norte de Portugal.

Eu acho que na maioria dos países há muita diferença entre a capital e o resto. Por exemplo, em Londres as pessoas não falam muito com os vizinhos ou com desconhecidos. En el norte de Inglaterra as pessoas são más simpáticos, na minha opinião.

Posso estar enganado, mas penso que os portugueses são simpáticos só no quotidiano normal. Àz vezes, por exemplo no trabalho (especialmente num ambiente competitivo), o desejo dos portugueses de serem simpáticos raia a hipocrisia. Por vezes, ser honesto e não tentar ser simpatico é mesmo ser simpático. ))

I am Asian-Canadian, born and raised in Toronto Canada and I had been to Portugal many times and I found Portuguese people are very reserve if they don't know you. One thing that I found interesting was they though all South East Asian were Chinese, and I had to tell them that I am Canadian but my parents are originally from Thailand. I also, had to tell them that I don't speak or understand Chinese. Maybe its a good video question to ask people why they think that 🙂

Well yeah most of Portuguese do not travel that much. The same happens to me when I go to anywhere in Asia they all think I’m Spanish or Italian. Been there a few times and most of the time they don’t know.
