In dragon boating we sit right next to the pool and practice our strokes that way. Not sure if works for this as well.

Actually, the opposite knee should lead in the bending part of the stroke.

Thanks for the comment Greg. With everyones different sizes or body and limb I think everyone might be different in the way they have to move to get a good paddle stroke, for me, bending the paddle side knee just helps me get a better reach and encourages the bending at the hips and paddling with the core which is what we are really trying to encourage people to do here over paddling with their arms. The real detail of getting the best / most powerful stroke is a vast vast subject ..... I think everyone has to figure out what works for them to be able to get the nice long reach :) Cheers, Will
