'sItamma maayamma shri ramudu maa tandri'....This Thyagaraja swamy's kriti has has a double meaning.... The Saint Tyagaraja says here 'Seeta is my mother (amma), Rama is my father (tandri)', referring both to Lord Rama with his wife Seeta and also to his own parents, his mother Seetamma and his father Ramabrahmam! I am sure that I have said on vasantha ragam in detail when I listened the Dikshitar kriti - "marakata lingam cintayEham mANikyavalyambA samEtam" in Vasantha Ragam ' praising the deity-Siva at Marakadachaleswara & consort -Maragadambikai.at Thiruengoimalai, located at Eengoimalai village in Trichy district ( but just 7 km from Kulithalai town which is in Karur district) .That was happened while explaining on another Keerthana - " NIlakantam bajeham satatam', praising the deity at the Arulmigu Kadambavaneswarar temple at Kulithalai town (known as the 'Dakshina Kasi') , that was posted in our group. Previously too I have listened this keerthanam of Vasatha Ragam sung by erstwhile maestros..even by Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer ! It is janya raga of Suryakantam, the 17th Melakarta raga., derived from Mayamalavagowla, the 15th Melakarta raga.It is vakra audava-shadava raga,malathiga, the notes of which is as - ārohaṇa : S M₁ G₃ M₁ D₂ N₃ Ṡ avarohaṇa : Ṡ N₃ D₂ M₁ G₃ R₁ S Vasantha is suitable to be sung in evening and is considered an auspicious raga. Here I should say on another ragam...Lalitha ragam that is closely related to Vasantha, while both share similar prayogas and scales! Lalitha is asymmetric as it does not contain Panchamam. It is a janya of Mayamalavagowla, the 15th Melakarta ragam. Pls . note that Dikshitar did use this ragam in the ragamalika..' Sri Vishwanatham Bhaje.'Of course, we can find popular krits- 'Nannu brovu Lalitha' by Syama Sastri;'and this one - 'Seetamma Mayamma' by Thyagaraja too sung in Lalitha as well by some vocalists. Here the Vocalist - Sreeranjini Kodampally , an Asst. Professor in Music at Maharajaas College, Kochi presented a fantastic recital....with an exhaustive ragaalapana and a a vbrant niraval @'paramesha vashistha paraashara naarada shaunaka suka'....and a a befitting swarakalpana with phrases in a host of combinations and celebrated her rendition!!!
