My Scoutmaster was my father figure. My bio father was a narcissistic alcoholic. Boy Scouts saved me and gave me opportunities I would have never had. I learned to tie knots, hike, camp, and survive. I am one of the youngest Eagle Scouts, earning it at 13. Later in life, when I had to administer First Aid, I used my Boy Scout skills. In the Army, when my team and I were trapped on a mountain for 7 days in 3 feet of snow, my Boy Scout skills saved us. I'm almost 70 and I can still repeat the Scout Law from memory... Trustworthy-Loyal-Helpful-Friendly-Courteous-Kind-Obedient-Cheerful-Thrifty-Brave-Clean-Reverent. We need a few good men to turn this around.

I liked the cub scouts, webelo scouts, and boy scouts. My father forced me to take my boy scout uniform to the scout leader (a great old guy that lived next door to us -- Mr. Rice) and hand it to him while saying I had to withdraw. Mr. Rice told me I could get it back any time but I never did. My father ordered me to do that and never rescinded the order. Why did my father do that? Because I made tenderfoot, but never advanced further. I learned many of the skills from my father and Mr. Rice, but I never did any presentations to the troop so I could "earn a merit badge" and thus tally them up to get a higher rank. Why not? I did enough school work at school and with homework; I did not want to do more as part of a past time. I never confronted my father about his act because I was not brought up that way. The salt on the wound though was he claimed I only wanted to be a boy scout so i could wear the uniform. He never understood me. I only wore the uniform for scout meetings, but during other events I did not. I just liked spending time with other guys who enjoyed doing the same things I liked to do.

My understanding is that a particular unit can decide whether to be co-ed or to exclude one sex. By age 11 or12, I think co-ed works best. Scouting isn't competitive; it's cooperative. If the boys are strong that the girls that's OK because the boys will do more of the heavy lifting. The girls might do more of the cooking or whatever.

I'm a woman myself and I firmly believe that there should be spaces that are for women only and men only. Firstly because, everyone deserves a private space of their own. Secondly, because sisterhood and brotherhood matter. Knowing how to have bonds with your own gender matters. It even rubs me the wrong way as an artist when people take fictional roles or groups that were masculine only then forcing them to include women. It's like forcing there to be a male Wonder Woman. Boys need things that are just for them just like girls need stuff that is just for them.

I don’t understand for the life of me why venturing and girl scouts couldn’t be improved and more popular, but instead they had to bring boy scouts down. I worked in National Youth Leadership camps for BSA for 4 summers as an adult leader, 2 years boys only and 2 years co-ed. The introduction of girls took the older boys' attention away from the younger boys. The younger boys just goofed off with no one to correct them, and the older boys either chased the girls or held back from hanging out with the younger boys in case that was not cool to the girls. The older girls were fine, but the younger girls pursued the older boys. The whole model was lost. What a shame.

There is arguably a time and a place for a program like this that is coed. I’m not sure, but I say it because I’m open to the possibility. As an Eagle Scout myself who fell away from Scouting, I’m glad I wasn’t around during the transition. Or even for the vote whether to go coed or not at troop level. Then again, they first made schools coed in the hope that girls would have a civilizing effect on boys. There were some older scouts in my troop who liked to talk about how Scouts Canada was coed. I don’t know how SC fares but of the two older scouts I have in mind, one never made it to Eagle and the other who did ended up being gay. From what I’ve heard of the GSA program, Scouts BSA has then beat nine ways to Sunday. I’m surprised the Girl Scouts didn’t do more to retain numbers, considering how much they disliked Explorer and Venture programs poaching girls. How long before boys claiming to be girls start going the other direction?

My son’s troop did not change at all when BSA changed their name. My experience when in the troop I became an Eagle Scout in is equivalent to the experience of all the boys in my son’s troop even after the name change. I earned Eagle Scout back in 1972 and went on to earn another 20 merit badges before turning 18. This was when boys were boys and the scouting program helped me keep out of trouble, work hard on myself and help others grow with healthy challenges, hiking, climbing, swimming, testing our survival skills and so much more. It helped shape young boys into dependable, strong men with morals. We pushed us to not to give up, protect those who were not as strong and a myriad of other personal growth challenging activities. It's a crying shame the kids now a days don't have a scouting program like what I enjoyed. It shaped my whole life to be so much better than I ever would have without it. In Boy Scouts, older scouts would correct bad kids behaviors and be the role models younger kids needed. In time, they became the people they strived to be through individual struggles with a support system from their piers. What helped the demise of the program? Too many nanny parents interjecting because they could have their kid fail and learn from their own failures. This made the troops weak and since the older scouts had to deal with emotional parents, they left. So troops became a round kid oriented vs retaining the core of the program. Then they started changing everything and it no longer was a program to push and test your abilities, but to just go to a pampered program that got political. I am from the Boy Scout program that was heavily involved and had to deal with parents, correcting younger scouts, and so on as a youth. I was happy to have gone through it when it was a challenge vs easy street. Too bad this program fell down the politics road and failed the youth involved.

Girls have been involved in the BSA Venture program since the 1970s, the change just allows them to form their own units and earn the other ranks they were previously restricted from (such as scout ranks up through eagle). The core values are still the same as they have been for decades. The requirements for advancement are more strict and the number has increased from the time that I earned my Eagle. All boy cub scout packs and troops continue to exist and thrive. It sounds like you're just not happy girls are able to demonstrate leadership and skills at the same level that boys can. Eagle isn't a test of manhood or masculinity. It's a demonstration of leadership.

I think the question is more why didn’t the Girl Scouts organization adopt the model they wanted instead of needing to occupy the Boy Scouts. The question isn’t whether or not girls should or shouldn’t have the things or experience, the question is why there is such an effort to dismantle an organization instead of building up the other. Merit badges, leadership and all the things could have been done within GSA without disrupting BSA. I think there is value to having all male spaces and all female spaces. We have plenty of mixed spaces, not every space has to be mixed. Boys learn good things from good men that they can’t learn from women. Girls learn good things from good women they can’t learn from men. Males only in BSA isn’t about depriving girls of something, GSA can develop whatever they want in female only membership. If GSA is failing to develop something of value, then take it up with GSA. Don’t try to occupy or dismantle BSA. By occupying BSA it is depriving boys of something important.
@aimsworth
@aimsworth 18 сағат бұрын
@@kevindowell6003 if you missed my comment above. All boy packs and troops exist and will continue to exist. This is a unit choice, girls cannot force themselves into these units. At the BSA level, it's encouraged for girl troops to be run by girls including the leadership. This is exactly what is encouraged, only encompassing the values and traditions of the scouts. Boys aren't losing out on anything just because girls are forming their own units. GS/USA is another organization entirely, they have different values and priorities, IT'S NOT THE SAME AS BSA BUT FOR GIRLS. Some families align more with the BSA (soon to be called Scouting America). This isn't dismantling the program. Girls have been part of BSA Venture for over 50 years, this is just expanding the program to allow them to earn the other ranks they were blocked from before.

@ I admit I don’t know much about the organization structure as a whole, I only have a small snapshot from my experience. I was approached by the Scouts to help facilitate with a merit badge, they wanted to use our facility, equipment and expertise. It was made clear that it was Scouts and no longer Boy Scouts. Speaking with some of the parents, they talked about how the boys in the troop stopped coming, and troop leadership changed from a male leader to a female leader and it was only girls in the troop now. Some of them were talking about pulling their girls out of the troop because it had become a girls only troop and there was an element/climate/influence that seemed pleased that there were no longer boys in the troop. As a facilitator, my male presence wasn’t particularly welcome. So from that experience it seemed like an effort to dismantle. So maybe this is isolated, I hope so.

I had a good two-parent upbringing, but the Scouts helped broaden my view of the world. I had great scoutmasters and learned a lot about self-reliance. After almost sixty-five years I can still recite the Code and creed. They were good guidelines after the Commandments. One of my grandsons was an Eagle, but his brother, who was a Life Scout on his way to being an Eagle, dropped out when they brought females in. The standards had been lowered, and the females were awarded merit badges and rank they would not have been entitled to. They hadn't put in the work that would have been required to earn those badges. The unfairness disheartened my grandson, and others, so he left. A great institution destroyed by wokeness (and lawyers).

I grew up as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout. Those in control of the BSA sicken me to my core with their woke behavior. As a Cub Scout my mother took turns with a couple other mothers as our Den Mother for every group meeting and adventure. As a Boy Scout our adult leaders were the fathers of my fellow scouts and they were great role models. As an Explorer Scout we had a few fathers guiding us, but we were old enough by then to participate in the leadership and direction of the Explorer Post and all the activities we engaged in.

I'm a current scout leader in both an all boys Catholic Cub Scouts Unit and Scouts BSA unit. We briefly explored trail life, but instead recognized that we could entirely operate as a fraternal unit surrounded by our Catholic heterosexual values AND double-downed on our Catholic identity. We now earn the prestigious Pope Pius VI Catholic unit of excellence awards for both units and our numbers have more than tripled since COVID. Our efforts are a testament to what is the good, true and beautiful, and that it can persevere in hard times. I pray the Scouting program returns to their roots before it becomes completely banal.

First, I want to thank you for your video. I grew up in a rough neighborhood and I ended up in the Boy Scouts. I believe it saved my life. The troop is active and we went camping one weekend a month and then one long week trip during the summer. I got to get out of the city realize there is a bigger world out there and spent time hiking and camping. The other thing I learned was goal setting. How to achieve. These are principles I’ve used throughout my life. I became an Eagle Scout before I was 15 years old. Throughout most of my life if somebody found out, I was an Eagle Scout they would congratulate me, but in the last years people almost comment like it’s a joke. I appreciate the way you pointed out how our society is going down because of the attack on males. I don’t know why the new administration would only focus on men in women’s sports and stopping that I don’t understand why I can’t be equal and the Boy Scouts put back to their original function. Of the scouts and I grew up with they were all good. They all succeededand contributed to our society. My acquaintances that we’re not in the scouts usually went off track and they were dead a long time ago. Enough said I’m 71 years old now and I thank God for the scouting program that I went through.

The same scouting program you joined is still alive and well. Since the 1970s girls have been allowed to participate under the venture program. The only thing that changed is girls are now allowed to join as cub scouts (if the unit allows it) or form their own troops and earn the ranks like the boys were able to. This isn't an attack on men, it's opening one of the best youth leadership programs up to the girls who were already participating from age 14-21 and allow them to start at age 5. The same values are still taught and instilled in the youth if they are willing to go through the program. All boys pack and troops continue to exist and thrive, they are not forced to allow them to join. It's a unit level choice. Sadly this video is full of misinformation about attacks on masculinity without understanding what the boy scouts of america program was even ever about. Over 120 years ago, scouting spread around the world, and was never meant to be a boys only program. In many countries for over a century both boys and girls have participated. It's a movement to return self reliance and confidence to the youth of the world, not create a boys only club to hang out.

Our troop in a TN city is the most conservative and is absorbing several defunct troops. However, even though our troop is still only boys, the adult leadership is actively promoting girl membership. As a parent active in the troop I have come to realize the leaders of this troop are also members of the sponsoring Methodist church. That’s ok, but is also telling that where the sponsoring organization goes, often Methodist or Presbyterian churches, so goes the ethos of the troop and packs they sponsor.

@@aimsworthyou are missing the point. The purpose of scouts is not just fun activities. It was teaching boys to be uniquely men by crafting traits that are typical of masculinity and the responsibility that comes with weilding such traits. It never should have been watered down to simple outdooring activities that create a genderless divide. If that was what was wished for, a new group could have been created for that. I kept my three sons out of Scouts for years for this reason, but when we visited this troop and pack for the youngest I had hope again. Two oldest have scrambled to make Life in 2 years. and youngest is almost SC. I help where I can. I considered investing myself in becoming full adult leadership as I have an ok background. I decided to not seek adult leadership because of the push for girl membership. I have no interest in promoting that and would not be ok with managing it. I am also not interested in joining the sponsoring church, as nice as they are, because even though I think it isn’t a requirement there still is a very strong trend. I seriously wonder who will be the scoutmaster and ASM’s for this large troop when the sons of the current leadership make Eagle, which they are all Star or higher. There really isn’t a strong / interested choice like when the current SM stepped up and the previous SM. No adult Eagles that I know of working ASM that would take SM. Kids already come from across the county because previous liberal troops folded &/or old SM’s quit. If this troop folds, there won’t be many left in the county at all, and none that I’m aware of that haven’t surrendered to wokeness. Might just look for a TL troop if we are still scouting if / when that happens.

Thanks for making this video. I was an active Scout leader when my son was of age to participate. The leaders were a group of committed outdoor enthusiasts who took the boys out camping in every season... camping out in snow, rain, and black flies. I like to think that we gave "city kids" a chance to learn outdoor skills and self reliance under any conditions. I started to sense that something ill was on the wind when the organization banned hats. Because wearing the hat might be against someone's religion. When the organization announced that it would start accepting girls, I quit. As someone pointed out below, there should be organizations for boys and organizations for girls whether it's sports or Scouts. If girls can't get the experience they are looking for in Girl Guides, find better leaders, don't hijack Boy Scouts. Your video's theme of tearing down masculinity is spot on. Feminism has made its mark everywhere. And just to make sure those who think like this are muzzled, they are labeled misogynists. I shake my head at what's happening in the world. Every institution that we held in high esteem when I was a child and through my early adult years is under siege from the new DEI ideology. I weep for the future of our world.

In the US, Girls Scouts USA is a completely separate organization with different goals, aims, methods, etc. Its programs are not built around a core of outdoor, experiential learning as are the BSA's programs. There is no Girl Guides option which has the focus and experiences available within BSA's programs. And most Scouts BSA Troops are still single-gender. Also, hats are not currently banned at a National level. Perhaps your Council or District implemented a local ban? Or maybe units were encouraged to not require hats as mandatory parts of the uniform because some Scouts would not be able to wear a Scout hat for religious reasons (maybe a Sikh Scout)?

As an Eagle Scout I am saddened by the current state of the program. Much of my sadness is from the overall degradation of morals and purpose that the program used to have, and that dedication to truth, which has been lost. I am actually not opposed to allowing girls to participate in the program and work to achieve the rank of Eagle for those who want to. However, I don't believe there should be any overlap between boys and girls in the program. There should be no combined troops, events, etc. Part of the benefit of the program is from the fact that you didn't have girls being a distraction to the boys. It is very much about young men growing up, accepting responsibility, and learning from adult role models how to grow into being a good man. I don't believe the program would be as popular among girls, but for those who want to work to achieve the rank of Eagle, I do think that's a worthwhile thing. But again, boys and girls should never be participating in the program together. It is a detriment to both. I do grieve that it's something I will not be able to participate in with my son.

Decades ago in the early 1970s the Australia Boy Scouts dropped the word "Boy" and became the Australian Scouts. If my memory serves me correctly, about 10 years later around1979 or the early 1980s they invited girls to join and women to be scout leaders. After that, the curriculum was emasculated, it was made suitable and "safe" for girls, and the boys started leaving, with few joining. At my last discussion with our local scout leader there were no boys in the local scout troope, there are only girls now. Boys don't want to join or don't stay because it is no long adventurous enough for boys. Most of the old activities have been banned for "safety reasons", the language has been changed to be "inclusive" and "non-offensive", the emphasis is on DEI. I loved my years in the Australia Boy Scouts in the 1960s and early 70s. We learned all aspects of bushcraft, first aid, rescuing, canoeing, responsible citizenship, we were taught to always help others, always be cheerful, to whistle when we work, to shake hands and be a brother to scouts and a friend to all,.... I still remember the original Scout Promise, and the original Scout Law, which we recited every week. The first point of the Law being, "A scout is trustworthy." Those original boy scout values stick. Now in my sixties, my prime guideline in life is: Live a trustworthy life in the eyes of God and Man. I am thankful for the Australian Boy Scouts that I knew and loved in the 1960s & early 70s when scouting in Australia was at its prime, and so saddened for today's boys that the Boy Scouts was ruined by leftist/feminist meddlers and replaced with the current emasculated version.

I got my Eagle Scout rank in 1994. My scoutmasters were the most honorable men to look up to. When we had ceremonies our Scoutmaster would have mini history lessons in his speeches about Lord Baton Powell. It was a place of comradery. I imagined that I would eventually go through Woodbadge and become a scout leader myself. I will not do this under Scouts BSA. It saddens me to think that we may be the last vestiges of leaders who exhibit the traits of the generation that passed down how to be virtuous men.

I was a Cub Scout leader for over 15 years. You can really tell which boys had a father in the home and which did not from their behavior, and Scouting was a boon to all of them. I’ve been an adult leader of a Boy Scout Troop for 15 years now and have worked in every adult leader job. My son Eagled about 10 yrs ago. Our troop is still instilling the values of what it means to be a good citizen and yes, an effective male, in our society. Many of our boys have had no father figure in their lives before scouts. That said, girl troops that allow females to strive and attain Eagle are just fine and take nothing away from the young men. I listen to many Prager U videos and agree in principle to most. But IMO, this one is a bridge too far that strays into silly ground. BSA was effectively destroyed by the bad behavior of many adults over decades. The scouting program responded strongly and has, unlike other organizations with the same problem, very effectively trained both youth and adults to recognize and properly respond to inappropriate behavior. However, the financial damage was done and BSA needed to rethink it’s business strategy to bring in more families. Plus, many females want the program and inviting them in, with separate all-female troops, hurts exactly none. Was there some grumbling due to the change, yes. Did it hurt our boys in any way? Not at all.

Thank you! @PragerU really didn't do their homework on this one, overlooked so many things about what have actually hurt scouting and dismiss the benefits that continue to be provided by the current scouting programs. He was cool and treated us like we were men. Whenever I hear them talking about boys needing men in their lives I think of him. I had a great dad too so I was very lucky. We have to get back to men spending time with the boys to teach them how to be men. We don't have to give in to the progressives trying to change our society's.

God, I love you Heather. Once again, you’ve nailed it. Thank you. Indeed, I was “raised” by a single mother who was a narcissistic alcoholic. We were always getting evicted thanks to her crazy shit. The only male role models I had were her drunken boyfriends. The Boy Scouts saved me. To this day, the scout law is my moral code. It has served me well. The sense of self-empowerment I gained as I learned my Scout skills gave me the foundation to be a successful man and the confidence to face the practical challenges of life. Growing up in California, the scouts also introduced me to the wilderness and backpacking. At age 68, this is still my primary joy in life and every year I try to get in a few week-long backpacking trips in the western US. During my career (University Professor), I moved to the UK and became a Scout leader for my son’s troop but, sadly, Scouting in the UK had already gone down the path you described. It’s coed in the UK and the idea of teaching boys to be self-empowered as they progress up the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle was thrown out as being elitist. Everything has to be a “group effort”. I must admit, the coed troops were easier to manage, but the boys were not getting what they need. We were simply training boys to function in a feminized workplace. I gave up. Oh, BTW, everything you’ve said about Universities is 100% true. God bless you, Heather.

I was a boy scout in the late '90s to early 2000's, the only male in my family to not achieve eagle. Boy Scouts taught me invaluable things, the most significant being intangible: how a young man should act. The organization reinforced and normalized being a good man, being kind, helping with no expectation of reward or compensation, all while teaching us active skills like wilderness survival, emergency management, first aid, swimming. It was gradually changing even while I was in, and we all recognized the slow creep of leftism - even though we didn't know that's what it was. Now, as a father to my own two young men, I do not consider that organization to be worthy of entrusting the safety and mindset-shaping of my boys. Local councils may have their own voice and way of doing things, but the broader context of the national organization is driving a relentless tear down of the good traditions handed down from lord Baden Powell. It won't be too far in the future when local councils are all forced into compliance with every aspect of the national org leadership. That makes me really disappointed and I do indeed grieve for what it was. It's no joy to see Boy Scouts gutted and destroyed. It sucks.

We were in Scouting for 38 years BEFORE it imploded due to failed leadership. There are 3 Eagle Scouts in my immediate family, myself included. The value of the organization in earlier times cannot be overstated. Somehow they eventually elevated a "man" to the role of CEO who failed his own family and then proceeded to bring that level of incompetence to the Scouts. A "man" with a gay son should never have been allowed into any kind of leadership role with an organization that does not allow openly gay individuals. It's a clear conflict of interest, and in seeking to serve his "son", he and the others who had no spine(s) destroyed a clearly necessary organization that sought to instill character into the lives of countless boys, many of whom had no other way to learn what Scouting offered. And far too many of the boys in Scouts had no other male role models. Truly sad and this country is left far worse off to simply satisfy the carnal lifestyle choices of a few vocal critics.

For background, I'm a 16 year, former Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing Adult Leader. FYI, the USA is about the only country where Scouting is boys only. Everywhere it is a family affair with the smallest child and the oldest are in the same unit. I blame much of the decline of the BSA on it's National management. The Board was populated with Corporatists and big money donors who knew or cared little about Scouting and a lot about leftist public relations. Their kowtowing to the woke crowd resulted in not defending against the sex abuse plaintiffs who's lawyers were going after the deep pockets rather than the offending individual and/or the Unit/District. That bancrupted the National organization. What finally broke the BSA's back was allowing the openly homosexual leadership. That was the catalyst for the LDS church leaving the organization. LDS members represented 40% of the enrollment. They were warned by many not to do so. The National board made the decision to throw away nearly half of their members in order to placate their leftist critics. I have to believe that the National board thought that allowing girls would make up the loss of the LDS.

Let’s consider a town with only boys in their gridiron football (football) league and only girls in their association football (soccer) league. A boy wants play soccer but knows he cannot join a girls team so he suggests starting boys soccer teams in the existing soccer league so the boys can train together and play each other. The soccer league likes the idea of expanding their program to boys. But the soccer parents complain that having soccer boys teams even if just play each other not the girls, would for some reason ruin the girls soccer experience. So the soccer parents tell him to join one of the boys gridiron football team (after all, it is also “football”). He explains it is a different sport and that he is really good at kicking. The soccer parents suggest he still joins a gridiron football team as a kicker or punter. He explains he tried that that but was not doing much kicking so he wants to play soccer also. Then the soccer parents suggest he works within the gridiron football league to influence the rules from within the league to start kicking more and throwing/passing less since after all it is called football! Finally, the soccer parents point out that girls are not allowed to play football so it would be unfair to let boys play soccer. This sounds similar to me than the arguments made against having girls-only troops learning the same skills taught in Scouts BSA but still by doing it so in their own girls-only troop camping and troop activities. Since Scouts BSA are setting up Girls-only troops, not having girls join existing boy troops, why would this ruin the boys troops?

Agreed. People assume that Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are 2 different sides of the same coin. When actually, they are extremely different. Secondly, girls have been part of the Boy Scouts program since the 1970s (explorers, crew, venturers). They work alongside boys with the scouting oath and law. They have fulfilled the same merit badge requirements. The only difference from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s to today? Back then, girls could do all of the work for the Eagle Scout rank but were not eligible for the award. Now they are.
