Welcome back, chess fans! In Round 8 of Norway Chess 2024, Chinese star Ding Liren had a rollercoaster day filled with both hope and heartbreak. After avoiding a fifth consecutive loss, Ding seemed poised for a victory in the armageddon game against Praggnanandhaa.
Ding's Promising Start
For most of the day, things looked much better for Ding, who managed to avoid slumping to a fifth loss in a row. The classical game left a sense of what might have been, as Ding held a much better position until the final couple of moves.
Armageddon Drama
Earlier in the tournament, Ding had beaten Praggnanandhaa in armageddon with the white pieces and seemed on track to do the same with Black. The fast pace of play seemed to aid the world champion as he struggled with nerves. However, in a completely winning position, Ding overlooked a devastating "quiet move" and found himself suddenly lost.
Signs of Hope
Despite the tough finish, there were some signs of hope for Ding. He had fashioned winning or close-to-winning positions in both games, indicating his resilience and skill remain intact.
