Everyone can play blindfold chess to some degree. Chess is no more magical than math but we love putting people with lots of training on pedestals. Its amazing, yes. But not impossible - clearly.
@aesaphyr3 жыл бұрын
@@MrSupernova111 Neuroscientific research has shown that the ability to visualise something in your mind varies from person to person along a spectrum from being able to visualise things in perfect detail, to being unable to visualise anything at all (the latter is called "aphantasia"). You can train the brain to improve a little but in essence this is like the ability to roll your tongue or not: some people can do it and others can't. If you can't visualise a chess board then you can't do blindfolded chess no matter how hard you try. I have a brain that can't visualise anything - if I close my eyes I can't see anything at all no matter how hard I try. So while you're correct in that it takes practice, lots of it, to get to where Pragg is, unfortunately there are people for whom all the practice in the world won't help with this.
@MrSupernova1113 жыл бұрын
@@aesaphyr . You have no idea what you're talking about. I'm sure if you could show someone 1000+ years ago a working laptop they would burn you at the stake because it would seem like magic to them which means death for you. Notice that math performance by country varies a lot so unless there is something magical in Asian rice then it means that math, just like chess, can be thought to anyone without a mental disability.

@@MrSupernova111 I suggest you read up on aphantasia. Not that it matters since this is the internet and I could be an uneducated idiot, but it happens that I am a paediatrician and last year I worked in neurodevelopment.

Just imagine giving to 16y old that has played video games since 8y old.. a new game like some shooter and in 15 minutes he has most frags..now imagine giving same game to 30y old that has never touched video game since being 12y old... he would need a month to get good at it...same as this blindold thing..in 2 month training each day you can play decent blindfold chess game if you know all rules, tactics etc

@MrSupernova1118 ай бұрын
@@consciousmassofatoms . Hello! I've improved a little. My rating was approximately 2000-2100 lichess at the time of my original comment. I recently peaked in the mid 2300s (2200 chesscom). I can visualize part of the board to the point where I can solve some tactics blindfold but I don't have a full mental map of the board yet. I have a lot to learn and haven't prioritized blindfold. Anyway, at the 1200 level I wouldn't worry about blindfold too much. Best thing to do is learn all mating patterns, basic endgames (especially rook endgames), practice calculation with a real board (no moving the pieces), and learn some strategy either by studying masters of the past (like Karpov) or a good strategy book. Good luck with your chess!

@darkdragon41486 ай бұрын
Late response so I apologize if you already found out, but he’s saying he trained this skill by analyzing positions without moving the pieces. As in, if you were given a puzzle, you solve the whole thing in your brain. This is much more doable with the board in front of you and is how you should start, but as time goes on the piece placements start to make more sense in your head. I’m nowhere near his level but as I practice it feels less abstract over time, so I definitely think it’s a skill that can be worked on for almost everyone

I do not understand how this is humanely possible. At the most basic level. Can someone plz explain?
@experiencefilm9225 Жыл бұрын
Human short term memory is 7 digits +- 3. Professional memory champions use hacks like The Major system to encode information directly into long-term to blow this number up to 10,000+ I.e. memorizing tens of thousands of digits of Pi.... But I do not understand how you would apply this to chess, as the randomness of the position... more possibilities than atoms in the universe. It's a holistic visual of the whole board at once. Not linear. Therefore, it must be a different pneumonic device utilized. HOW????>?
@darkdragon41486 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry if this response is way too late: chess is an 8x8 board no matter how the position looks and has a limited amount of pieces. This is taken advantage of when needing to come up with a position blindfolded. There’s an absurd amount of possible combinations of setups but when it’s broken down into chunks or thought of abstractly, or even directly visualized(this is rare but chess players like Hikaru Nakamaru claim to see the board and pieces “physically” in their mind, which is believable considering their success), it’s a lot more logical. Plus, players such as Pragg have went over thousands of positions, and much of this is pattern recondition. Only a small amount of configurations in chess actually make any sense, and completely illogical pawn structures and piece placements are harder to visualize or remember for even grandmasters(something Magnus Carlsen has spoken about). So when going from a starting position and having a pretty much normal game, it’s easier for them to track the movement of the pieces.
