I'm trying to learn indian sign language as I'm in the medical field and it can come as a huge help for communicating my patients. I had a doubt, are the signs supposed to be reversed in case the person signing is left handed?

That's amazing. Your patients are very lucky. ❤️ Use your right hand wherever I use my right, and left where I use my left. If you're left handed, use your left hand where I use my right and, and right where I use left. Just don't interchange your hands mid conversation.

Hey I am currently learning American Sign Language (I can use it pretty decently) and I did not knew Indian Sign language existed. I recently discovered this and the question that keeps popping in my mind is "why are the signs so different from ASL if we are using the same letters (a,b,c,d) " The purpose of language is to allow people to communicate and connect so if Indian Sign language had the same letter and same signs for common things like say house, or dad or son and had a few adaptations to fit indian culture and added some new signs which we needed but did not exist then the impaired people of india would have a chance to interact with much much more people. Does anyone understand what I am trying to say?

The same reason why languages differ from country to country, it's a different medium but a language nontheless. Ofcourse there are going to be different, there are over 300 sign languages and even more spoken languages. All you can do is accept the fact that differences in languages are going to exist

Being a final year medical student, i got encouraged by this category of patients so that if someday I encounter a patient who can't speak or listen to me and there's no one to translate....i should be able to communicate with them....so i started learning ASL but then I got to know that there are plenty of sign languages available on the basis of region and being an Indian it is really necessary for me to learn ISL and it is completely a different world than ASL....but it's really interesting to learn everyday....it enhances different regions of brain to hand coordination to communicate.

Hi, I had some questions... 1. Does it matter which hand you sign with? 2. Is there much of a difference between ASL and ISL? Meaning would it be OK if I communicate with Indian hearing disabled people in asl? Or would it be totally different? 3. Could you recommend an app, or a website that goes hand in hand with your videos, to learn ISL?

I have been wanting to learn sign language for sometime now, what gave me a push was my recent encounter with an employee of the Lemon Tree Hotel . They were deaf and mute. They came in with a smile and were so nice through out the conversation but I felt extremely short handed because I didn't know sign language and used whatever gestures I thought might communicate what it is I meant. So I decided to learn ISL in case I ever need it in the future.

Thank you for teaching us sign language :D It really helps people communicate with other people like their deaf friend and others :> The reason I'm here is because i was bored and wanted to learn a new language. And since I'm Indian i decided to come to your video. I also know English a ton so this will also be easier for me :D i have told my parents if they wanted to know sign language and my father said sure so yeah :D Have A Great Day And Stay Safe Pragya And The Other People Who Read This Comment.

Hello Pragya di! I have been searching across KZbin to learn sign language and I just came across the content you made. First of all, thankyou so very much for the initiative. I can see the heart and hardwork behind this. The videos are very informative. Please keep teaching because one day I want to be fluent in ISL. Please keep posting new lessons as frequently as possible. Much Love and God Bless.

Hi Pragya, Thankyou for this series, I have long been aspiring to learn ISL and this is definitely a start! :) Could you also recommend some courses or institutes that offer ISL courses? Thanks in Advance! :)

Thank you for your appreciation. I am glad I could introduce you to ISL. If you want to learn Indian Sign Language properly I would suggest that you do a certification course from a place that hires a deaf teacher. There are many such institutions, ISLRTC, Noida Deaf Society, NIHH etc. (I am not associated with any of these, I am not an expert.) Happy learning. :)

The person who made this video knows English well. According to the Oxford Dictionary of English, an alphabet is "a set of letters or symbols in a fixed order, used to represent the basic sounds of a language; in particular, the set of letters from A to Z", and a letter is "a character representing one or more of the sounds used in speech; any of the symbols of an alphabet." Most Indians and other South Asians, even educated ones who speak English well otherwise, don't know the difference. My own grandmother gave me a heart attack when she said that English has 26 "alphabets" instead of "letters" when I was 5 years old. I thought that I actually had to learn 26 different writing systems! The most a language has around 2 or 3. Japanese has 2 alphabets and a set of pictograms called Kanji.

Hello, a really nice video with good approach and pace. I am handed. So was wondering if there is a significance to maintaining hand positions or it could be shifted based on dominant hand. Also could you recommend some reading material on this

Thank you for your appreciation. I am glad I could introduce you to ISL. I am not aware of a book you could learn sign language through, buy ISLRTC has a sign language dictionary on it's KZbin channel and website. You can check that out. If you want to learn Indian Sign Language properly I would suggest that you do a certification course from a place that hires a deaf teacher. You can check out organisations like ISLRTC, Noida Deaf Society, NIHH, National Association of Deaf, Haryana Welfare Society for Persons with Speech and Hearing Impairment, AIISH, V-shesh, GiftAbled, Sai Swayam Society, IDBA. (I am not associated with any of these, I am not an expert.) Happy learning. :)

Hi, would you ever consider doing a full course on ISL? I've been looking for one for years and haven't found any place I can learn from. You could also do a paid course and I would totally sign up!

Hello, Priyanjali. Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately, I am not an expert in ISL, so it won't be possible for me to develop a full fledged course. However, if I do gain expertise in this, I will definitely consider this. Till then, I'd suggest that you check the courses offered by ISLRTC, it is an autonomous body under the Government of India. Link to their website is given in the description.

Thank you for this amazing series. I wanted to learn a new language, so I was thinking of learning Spanish or Japanese. Then I thought what's the point of it if I'm never gonna speak that language in India. So I went ahead and subscribed to this channel instead. I believe everyone should learn sign language, even if it's only the basics.

Why do we have so many sign language to add up to confusion. Though, I can speak, I just wanted to know this sign language, I was learning ASL for a week now and after your video popped up, I realise that Indian sign language is totally different 🤯 Any how thank you much. Final twist was the quiz, unknowingly you made me to sign your name. I did not realise that untill you revealed it 🤩 👍 ❤️
