Praise to the Holiest in the Height - J. H Newman|R. R. Terry

Praise to the holiest in the height composed by Cardinal J. H. Newman, was Written in 1865, and first published in the author's Verses on Various Occasions, in 1868. It forms part of a poem of some length, entitled The Dream of Gerontius. This Dream describes the journey of a disembodied soul from the body to its reception in Purgatory. Various hymns are introduced throughout the poem, and this is given as being sung by the Fifth Choir of Angelicals" as the disembodied soul is conducted into the presence chamber of Emmanuel previous to passing forward into Purgatory.

It can be used in any season

In England, it’s typically sung during the high feasts and solemnities, or masses of great significance (equivalent of the old high mass), such as the Chrism Mass, Ordinations, Easter, and during the Easter season. This is because, as you said, it’s very triumphant and sounds stunning with a full choir. It’s also brilliant during Christmas. That said, it’s also common during Ordinary Time because it’s not about a particular event, more about Jesus’ life and mission, so it fits then too. Not so much during the first weeks of Lent (I personally think it is a good hymn for Palm Sunday, though not better than the traditional hymns and chants).
