Prakriti Bhavan, a little gem of a museum : Human history has often demonstrated that nature can be an intimidating foe. However, it is also the best friend of humanity-a reality that is, regrettably, not frequently emphasised. At Prakriti Bhavan, this disparity disappears.
Located in the Birbhum region of West Bengal's Ballavpur area of Santiniketan, the Prakriti Bhavan environment Art Museum was conceived as part of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's vision for humanity's harmonious coexistence with environment. This museum may be among the few in the world that only focuses on the abundance and majesty of nature, as well as the various artistic mediums that it has influenced.
This little gem of a museum features an outstanding indoor exhibit of metal transcreations and sculptures made from natural driftwood and dried wood. A large outdoor garden with organic rock sculptures is also present. Of all, nothing can match the inventiveness of nature, but that just makes it more important to protect, preserve, and nurture it-a point Prakriti Bhavan aims to make.
Prakriti Bhavan is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and requires a nominal admission price of Rs. 30, plus an extra Rs. 20 if you want to take pictures. Youngsters under the age of six get free admission.
After visiting Prakriti Bhavan, you can choose to go over to the neighbouring Amar Kutir, which is well-known for its rustic handmade items, and enjoy a cup of tea and some snacks of your choosing at the museum canteen.
Following the ecotourism path, the Deer Sanctuary and two sizable bodies of water-which serve as winter habitat for a number of migrating birds-are located almost across from Prakriti Bhavan.
Santiniketan's renowned and stunning Sonajhuri woodland is located next to Prakriti Bhavan. It has seven bird-themed rock sculptures on it currently. Every traveller to Santiniketan is aware that the weekly Sonibarer Haat Saturday fair takes place in Sonajhuri. The Ballavpur Santhal hamlet, where the ancient Santhal peoples lived, is located behind Prakriti Bhavan.
