Wishing you could understand what the people are commenting. They don't burn these candles, just for showing Buddhist legend. The festival is held every year before Buddhist Lent day. I live 60 kilometers next to Ubon. Most of candle sculptures explain the Buddha life during the time of becoming enlightening one. Rainy season begins from May to October and during the season. Buddhist monks can't stay away from the monasteries as many of the land are rice-farmed, so it's practical not to destroy rice in the farms by not travelling all over.

One of the Buddhist religious traditions is the Buddhist Lent (Kao Pan-Saa) or the rainy season. Monk's law prohibits monks from traveling and must stay at one temple only. Buddhist people will offer candles to the monks for daily use while staying at the temple. In ancient times, candles helped monks to be more comfortable while performing their daily duties. Therefore, it became a tradition to bring candles to offer to monks and began a candle carving contest.
