It is ok that we are celebrating the Pravasi Diwas with such fanfare in the wake of Desis’ phenomenal successes in education, R&D, management, healthcare, and small and medium businesses in the restaurant and food industry, not to speak of hospitality industry in the Gora lands. Phenomenal indeed. But we should ALWAYS acknowledge and remember and honor the other Pravasi Desis who left India under very harsh condition as indentured labors to South Africa, Malaysia, Fiji, the Caribbean, Suriname… … When the British and Dutch India companies moved them to their colonies thousands of miles away, they were lied, telling them that they were taking these Desis to Europe. This happening in early 19 century. Almost All these indentured labors were barely educated, and left their poverty-stricken villages in Bihar, UP, Andhra and Tamil Nadu Their life was harsh. Yet they kept Thai faith and their religion and their social cohesion intact in spite of serious efforts by the missionaries in all those places. And these early indentured labors had NO modern communication devices. Not even radios. After 2 or 3 generations, the descendants of these indentured labors became middle class professionals as doctors, engineers, teachers and small traders. The later Desis success in 20th century in the Gora lands is primarily because of their Angrezi education. And with all tools of communication in their fingertips. So I pay my tributes to my other Pravasis who were taken out of India as cheap labor, who had minimal education and yet survived and flourished keeping their religion and culture intact.
