1. My old Champion which I am using for over 2 years is also a 3 battery version. So three battery is not a new feature. 2. The plastic quality is very bad with sharp edges on the battery compartment and the lid. In fact I cut my cut my finger when handling it. 3. The antenna does not fit snug in the slot. It remains up and interferes when handling the handle. It looks this cabinet was originally designed for a shorter antenna, whereas they are giving a long one, which in fact is good. Even in the new version of yours, it is the same which could be noticed when you showed the back of the radio. 4. The place where the antenna is connected is not strong as you say. It is showing cracks on my radio after handling. 5. I did not notice any overloading when you were tuning. I also don't think the whip or rod antenna has any effect on MW reception, unless it is designed for that. 6. MW reception will improve after 7 pm these days, i. e. After sun set. 7. The sound quality is also good on my older radio although it could be improved. 8. Selectivity is also fairly good on my radio on SW even with a very narrow band spread. 9. I wanted to speak to you in depth about radio in India, but you have not responded to my requests to share your number via my email. As such I rest my case. 10. Thanks for your videos.

Dear Pravinder Ji, Very nice review, like always. 😊 You covered all the features of this newly released PHILIPS radio. Like I had already mentioned in one of my comments (elsewhere on this channel) that Philips Radios have been and are part of the family. It's like a family member and has been entertaining us till date since 1955. I own an EXACTLY similar radio in looks, the Philips RL384TV, a 4 band radio (FM, MW, SW & TV). This Radio works on 4.5 Volts (3 X D size cells). The only difference is that the newer version (RL384) has discarded the TV Band and added a much desired extra SW Band, thus adding a few extra Meter Bands. In India (as well as in many parts of the world) the TV as well as LW Bands have become redundant. IMO, the reception quality of the RL384 is quite good with almost zero distortion at full volume. The added extra SW Meter Bands (from 13 to 90 Meters) is a good addition. The radio did not sound like it was based on a DSP Chip, probably the chuffing was dampened. However, most likely the radio is DSP based. Like its earlier brother (the RL384TV), its robust giant antenna (almost 46 inch long) is quite an added advantage. For the asking retail price tag of Rs.2000, I wish, in this model (the RL384), they had added a simple Fine Tuning facility for SW (which is not very difficult to add and doesn't cost a fortune). This would have been a most desired extra feature and thus greatly enhancing its acceptance value. Nevertheless, PHILIPS is well known for designing great radios with quality components. Just MY thoughts/opinion after watching the short but nice review video. Pravinder Ji, keep up the great work Sir! Let's keep the radio alive. Long Live The Radio. Kind regards, Narendra

अच्छा रेडियो है प्रविन्दर जी ये।साउंड भी प्यारा है।price भी जायज़ है। पगारिया से अगर तुलना करें तो वो भी अपने price रेंज के हिसाब से बहुत अच्छा रेडियो है। उसकी अपनी sound क्वालिटी है और इसकी अपनी। जैसा की आपने बोला इसका price कम होना चाहिए तो मेरे ख्याल से इसमे company को in built बैटरी देनी चाहिए भले ही इसका price कम न हो मेरे पास इसका tv बैंड वाला मॉडल आ चुका है जो 12 साल पहले 1100 का खरीदा गया था।इस हिसाब से इसका price ठीक है।

I was purchased this 12 years ago. This radio is really a solid product of Philips. It has loud speaker. Good signal reception capability. After some years of purchase, I was supposed to go job, then listening was stopped. And then it was damaged internally with some teck issues. I was tried to hard to repair this radio but not fully successful. Cz unavailability of spares of radios. I still have this radio, listening sometime with FM bands. MW, sw, and TV bands are not working today with my radio. I really disappointed and sad about unable to repair this radio😢 Iam still roaming shop to shop to repair this legend..

Namaste , thank you for this review . I think the receptivity of the Champion is good . Philips products rarely disappoint . Unfortunately the Champion, Bahadur and Trishul are for indian market , they are not sold in Europe where I live .

Positive because easy to carry around but negative because then people start feeling that the build is not good at all. What could have made this Radio perfact is - rechargeable battery. Not everyone can buy D-cells at regular intervals and considering it is a dsp Radio, it will consume the cells faster. An adaptor can be a good solution though.

I finally bought this radio and it got delivered last week and it is again out-of-stock. Seems to be really selling well. Reception is very good, amplifier is also quite powerful - It is easily running my 6 inch bookshelf speaker loud. But the built-in speaker is average, does not have clear treble and at moderate volume the sound is not nice to hear although there is no distortion. So now I have ordered a small speaker with a response of 90Hz to 20KHz to replace the built-in speaker. Also ordered some synthetic cotton which I will stuff inside the cabinet to remove the internal reflections and clear up the sound. I already tested this with the current speaker by stuffing the cabinet with cloth and it clears up the sound to some extent. After fixing the sound I will connect a stereo headphone jack (with a 330 ohm resistance in series to remove the mild hiss and reduce the volume to earphone levels), an antenna jack, a treble cut switch if needed (like in Tecsun R9700DX) and 2 LED bulbs to illuminate the tuning dial. There is so much of space inside the cabinet that this radio can really be modified fairly easily.

I received last piece available from amazon today. nice and sensitive radio. No distortion at full volume. very good sw,fm reception. I have a suggestion on sound quality that a slight lesser bass may be due to new speaker. But one can try on a different speaker. One error is there in band selection is there is fm at the top then MW, sw1,sw2 in the order. Whereas band change switch on right is fm then MW, sw2,sw1. I am saying that order of dial is not followed in band switch. It is inconvenient.

Thanks for such a good and detailed review Pravinder Ji. Found your channel recently and like your work!! My thoughts on this radio: 1. Something is better than nothing, so its good that Philips brought this new model with better SW coverage 2. Build quality is very bad compared to a cheap radio like XHDATA D219 - not even a close contest. Needs to improve drastically. 3. Philips should optimize the radio to bring out the benefits of large size - this size radio should be MW king fitted with large ferrite rod antenna, also should have 10-12 Watt speaker with bass radiator at the back for sound with good bass. 4. Large tuner display with backlight facility. Also mention the frequency in SW and not just meter band. I have a Tecsun R-9700DX and it is great to use at night with display lights on analog tuner. 5. Make SW atleast 4 bands and please bring band switch in front of the radio. 6. Having power on/off and volume on same knob is a bad idea. Even XHDATA D219 has a separate power switch. The knob gets damaged fast due to sparking when turning on I think. 7. Why use D cells? Use 3 or 4 AA batteries - will be easier to get rechargeable NiMH batteries then and will use less space. Or maybe use 18650 3.7V rechargeable batteries. And make the DC input a charging point with USB-C. Radios don't work well on adapters in AM. All this will increase the cost to may be 5k to 6k range, but radio is an enthusiast category device now - so those who want it will pay. For the 2k and below market there is already Pagaria, Santosh and many other brands. Why a company like Philips needs to compete at such low level I don't know.

I agree with all your points, and the answer is given by yourself as the product price will be raised. People are not willing to buy Radios in this price. Maybe this is just the beginning by Philips. They may come up with better models, in different prices ranges. But for that, this product must do very well. In 2k, it's a good proposition. And as I said it seemed a little overpriced, Philips later dropped the prices from 1948 to 1725.
