Thanking him is important but the most important thing is accepting the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross... God's free gift of salvation. Once you are saved, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit.Ephesians 4:30 says and grieve not the holy spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. God seal is on us that means we are his property. At the time of salvation we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and therefore as it says in John 10 no one can pluck us out of the father's hand. Jesus says that he loses nobody... That means you cannot lose your salvation once you are saved. A person can backslide and there are consequences... But if you repent God will forgive.
