As a Seven Star practitioner, that is not a seven star stance... this whole form is a joke. so many opportunities to strike you in your vital areas because you leave them wide open... And last time I checked, a mantis doesn't have a beak.
@kylebacon996711 жыл бұрын
This is why Karate stylists can't do Kung Fu forms. First. It's not a "Beak." Its a "Claw." The primary tool of Mantis Kung Fu is for the Mantis CLAW to trap and grab. I've never seen a Mantis poke it's prey with it's claws. Second. The Mantis system doesn't focus on pressure points of nerve endings. Those are covered in other animals. Third. There is no such thing as a "Mantis Kick." What was done could be classified as an outside crescent kick at best. Fourth. At about the 4:30 mark you cover a "transitional stance." This would be a cross-legged stance. However, the stance you're claiming to be well defined and need to accentuate is done incorrectly. If you spent 5 minutes in a Quan learning from a Sifu who was worth their salt and they were covering stance work in the Praying Mantis they would show you one of only 5 stances. The cross legged stance being one. Your rear knee should be inside the pocket of the lead leg acting as support. But you need to sit lower in your stance to get that pocket and proper depth. Lastly. Calling a Kung Fu form a "Kata" is like asking a Karate Stylist to display a Kung Fu form... you just don't.

A mantis doesn't have a beak. The mantis FIST is supposed to represent it's claws for punching (with the back of the wrist), hooking, grasping, and locking. Look at the picture of any mantis and you'll see what the form is trying to emulate. It's claws. Go ahead and google mantis beak and mantis fist.

Dear Jake Mace, thank you for your video. after 2:24 seconds i realised i've been doing praying mantis my entire life. i practice judo and every time anything martial arts comes by in my life, i try and practice it. and i try and practice kicks and punches and throws which i'm simply too weak and small for yet maybe there's an adaptation i could create. the way you did that "reverse roundhouse kick", well that's funny! i figured out that kick on my own and now i see that it's legit! to all the ones offended by how this is not traditional, Bruce Lee shared his wisdom by breaking with tradition. Ip man, assuming i studied this correctly, didn't bother tradition for the sake of tradition either. tradition holds the ultimate value. but that doesn't save my life if i just so happen to be a horrible student. This man with this video taught me something I could save myself with. tradition doesn't make you arrogant about tradition. if i understand anything about the philosophies behind martial arts, you cannot allow yourself to be attached to tradition. you would make tradition feel rigid and old. I'm just a black belt trying to improve uppon himself. This video was very helpful to my life. It can be very lonesome to be a black belt. you have everyone's blessing to study and discover on your own but the issue with that, you are on your own. each randori i have to figure whether or not i incorporated tegniques, thoughts, feelings, philosophies, experiences, into my judo succesfully to the point i can walk away with the Ippon of that tuesday night. Usually i get schooled as much as i school my partners. to me martial arts are just like growing flowers: you're sad if yours doesn't bloom. you're happy if you see yours showing its beauty. i remember my yellow belt partner (secretly third dan aikido) throwing me in such a correcting manner that I grew as a human being! he threw me with an aikido Goshi Nage! and afterwards he explained to me how he did it! I tend to jump in and push back at first. that leaves me open for an attack like that. come to think of it, I need to humble my hips in order to throw as beautiful as he does. anyway, let's not crush the plant this man grew. However, i cannot forsake my duty to just speak out and hopefully say something useful. I feel like Jake talks about hitting a target. May I humbly suggest this? focus on the form, not the target. in a fight there might be tenthousand targets to hit. just trust the form to hit either of them and be effective. Just trust the tradition of the form. I can understand the hurt I read. But as imperfect as an individual can be, he's also just trying to live a life as a martial artist and sharing what he knows. at 4 minutes I hear him and it hits me: this is how you sell martial arts as a workout. fitness schools just BEG for an effective method to sell. nothing wrong trying to make a living helping people lose weight. fitness is just rather flashy and you just need to sell it. conditioning, flexibility, self defence, mastery of the mind, anything goes on that poster. to insult it is to not understand it. maybe he's just like your average workout going guy that descided he's grown so much from it that he wants to give back. you just HAVE TO forgive his overenthousiasm. I do not frown uppon people criticising. I just felt like expressing constructive criticism towards the ones criticising; or something like that. please don't be offended and please understand that I'm just a guy trying to learn.

ShaolinCenter At least find a Sifu (that means master, teacher, father) then and stop calling what you are doing kungfu. Every true student of a Chinese Sifu who teaches traditional kungfu would respect and mention his teacher. The fact that you don't do that... everybody already knows enough. So find a teacher and be horrified at what you've been selling as kungfu. Every video you say, Awesome, Greatest, Super, Secret...that is the cheapest of ways to try to get more views on youtube. I showed your video to my Sifu, 3 seconds was enough. "Ahhh money talks bullshit walks", was his reply. Then he turned away.

I myself run a xingyi and Bagua school. my current master is sifu Eleonora. As i said a Chinese kungfu student is proud of his lineage, Mace never mentions his shifu. The alingements in his forms are of. There is just no beginning at where this is not kungfu. Butt sticking out, shoulders raising up, knees going left and right, bowstance is off, horsestance is wrong (feet facing out), the kicks, and so on and so on... but this is the last reaction i'm gonna do because it is just not worth the time.

hardfugoo1, you are correct about there being many styles, but I doubt Mantis has "Beaks", lol, Cranes have beaks, so it makes him look amateurish, like he doesn't really know so he calls it what it would be in Crane, like its a beak but modified to a mantis. If he was just posting as a student, that'd be alright, but if you are posting to teach, or promote yourself as a teacher, I think you should use the correct terms. To each his own, though. Have fun.

Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace This is not mantis. What is the name of the form? Who's your teacher? Who was his or her teacher? And why are you the only mantis boxer in the whole world who thinks mantis claw is for attacking pressure points in the head, who doesn't recognise 7-star stance (which granted doesn't appear in some of the softer mantis styles, like 6 harmony or plum blossom) and who calls mantis claw, as they call it in 7-star mantis, or mantis hand, as they call it in softer mantis styles, the 'mantis beak'? Mantids don't have beaks, so when the (probably mythical) founder of the mantis system, Wong Long, wanted a way to defeat Shaolin boxers whose long stances and fast hands were too much for him and was inspired by the movements of the praying mantis, was he inspired by a mutant one? Or, as is more likely, when a melange of northern kung fu styles (none of which is shown here, incidentally) was thrown together as a vehicle for a more efficient set of fighting precepts based around signature mantis moves which occur in nearly all mantis fist forms, like hook, grapple and pluck, single intercept, supplementary fist, overwhelming and millstone palms, and supplementary lowline kicking built into the stance work, are we to believe that one of those forms, this one, was totally different to all the others in every way?

Josh Quick "sparring" with people is in no way equal to real combat. This guy is a fraud as well as his "master" Sin Kwang The'. Are you not reading that many here are verifying this? You obviously have no experience in real martial arts, so you see this and can't tell the difference between it and the real thing. Martial arts systems are established by the characteristics of their sets or forms. Ask Jake the name of this form and research the origin of it. You won't find it. Because it's fake - like Jake. I'm not "hatin" as many uninformed people here accuse those who expose jake say. Just looking out for those who don't know what is real from fake. If I sell you a diamond ring, how would you know it is real? You go to a jeweler. Ive been involved in martial arts for almost 40 years. I have no videos to post and I don't need to prove anything to you or anyone else. You need to look up right here on YT, all the mantis styles that exist. 7 Star, 6 Harmony, Plum Blossom, Taiji Mantis - look them up and see what real mantis is like. Come back and compare. I'm a Southern stylist so I prefer Southern Mantis Boxing. Check that out too.

4:15, when you're showing these strikes with that really low stance, I must ask a question about it's effectiveness and utility. I am no MMA expert I'll be straight with you, I just love Lion Rafale from Virtua Fighter. Anyways, it seems you extend yourself really wide, almost too wide. The strikes you do after seem to lack the ability to draw chi and strength from the ground, into your legs & channeled forward into those strikes fully & effectively. To some degree, a lot of elements, I feel are theatrical & are meant to connect with the spirit of the style/stance in question & less for its outright fighting usefulness or effectiveness. What is your take from a more realized & mature perspective as a fighter?
@JustinP11710 жыл бұрын
It's sad seeing soo many people who profess to learn Kung-Fu but have lost all sight of the spirituality of it, to bring peace where there is violence. So to all who post negative comments, just remember, no one style is greater than another. The painter can have Kung-fu, the sculptor or the baker can have Kung-fu, Kung-fu is a way of life. Not a rigid form set in its ways. Do not think that because you've learned one way to do something that it is the only way it can be done. Keep up the good work Jake. And do not allow these negative minds influence you. Stay strong!

Techniques with the fingers, the elbow, and the knee are very often employed in the Seven Star Praying Mantis Style. Fingers are usually applied for thrusting at the eyes and the throat, or for choking the throat of the opponent. Fingers can also be used to Claw at the face of the opponent. (No such thing as a mantis having a beak, which it doesn't have. Beaks are for birds not insects) The first three keywords, "Hook, Grapple, Pluck" always appear together, as these three techniques are usually applied in co ordination to serve for both defending and counter attacking purposes. (again no beak) Taken from the book by Master Lee Kam Wing's Seven Star Praying Mantis Kungfu witten by Wing Tsun Kuen Master Leung Ting, close door disciple of Ip Man.

It is said that this guy is called: Fake Jake Mace. I'm not a Kung Fu practitioner, but the real Kung Fu teachers are saying he's teaching Fake Praying Mantis Kung Fu and is deceiving others with what's he's teaching.
It's funny how everyone in this comments section and jake mace has clearly never been in a fight. Guys, you don't strike a horse or bow stance in a fight, taolu is for conditioning. Not only that, but the movements in the taolu are exaggerated; in a fight, you'd be standing upright more + not as rigid. And FINALLY, and I can't STRESS THIS ENOUGH, pressure points dont work the way YOU THINK IT DOES. You don't strike a singular point with a finger, you whittle the nerve cluster down with FORCE. Praying mantis is optimized for JOINT LOCKS, NOT PRESSURE POINT KNOCKOUTS.

It's more flexible and you can arguably jab deeper with good conditioning. The 3 fingered hook doesn't work well when you release the wrist. This, however, has an advantage in that it only engages one tendon and allow you much for freedom of motion without sacrificing much structure.

Although nearly every one below criticizes Jack Mace negatively, I admire his guts and good intelligence to invent a form like this. If it is bad, it will vanish; otherwise, it will be passed on. So why be annoyed and angry? Let this man express what he thinks. This is a land of the free, isn't it? You can also upload a video showing your "correct, orthodox" technique. From your boiling anger, I know he wins; he smiles and enjoys his technique. See who benefits?-----at least psychologically.

My theory (based on the court case between Jacob Rydberg aka Jake Mace vs Sin Kwang The) is after Jake and Shaolin-do parted ways, he kept some or all of the shaolin-do material to not loose his students, but I think he also creates his own forms based off of what he learned from Shaolin-do. He should have just overhauled his curriculum with REAL authentic kung fu. Everything he does screams Karate-ish...smh

Jake's is a Northern Praying Mantis style, not a Southern one, though they are still common in some movements.

Dude this guy is cracking me up!!!! Double smash! Is that what they called that redonkulous looking kick in ancient China. Doubt it. He's like a character in a Paul Rudd movie or something. Or no no no wait! Dangle! From reno. Haha. Anyway. Highly entertaining? Yes. Kung fun? Negatory.

I really like Mantis style. well. That along with Tiger style and crane. perhaps you should demonstrate this on a person if you haven't yet. (i just ran into this video/channel today)

I will admit i study hung gar kuen. But i do like the Praying Mantis Style of Kungfu. I have Lee Kam Wing's books on Seven Star Praying Mantis Kungfu. A Praying Mantis doesn't have a "beak" they have "hooks" right? Birds have beaks i thought.

"JAKE MACE NORTHERN PRAYING MANTIS FIST" !!! OR "MACE MANTIS" OR "MMA" (MACE MANTIS ART) IN SHORT; THIS'S A FORM/SET/KATA OF NORTHERN PRAYING MANTIS CALLED "JAKE MACE NORTHERN PRAYING MANTIS FIST", if you agree. Though I coined this term, you can change it to a better name. The fist is good in that it symmetries the movements which the original Northern Praying Mantis ones do not. It's good for health and protection. It's good that it has movements not in the original. It's good that it is short. It's good that it exhibits features of NPM.

to do certain styles like this tiger, crane, mantis... its a respect for the animal itself and upholding that respect works their force in to your style

Jake mace why does your horse stance have toes pointed out? Why does your seven star stance look like a cat stance?

You would think by now he would find a real teacher and show real kung fu.

In a real fight, you don't use all the moves shown at the same time. He shows you all the possible moves, and you use them when you can in a fight. Keep in mind, they will almost defiantly block you or counter you if you attack too many times. Only strike if you can.

Very nice. I trained in Northern Plum Blossom with Grand Master Chi Moon Park while i Korea. Interestingly enough he trained the great Roger Hagood in the mid 70's with whom I also correspond though he lives in China now. It is hard to find training in Mei Hua Tang Lang here in the states.

funny thought Roger hagood was into the southern mantis?? Im sorry but If you think this is good you dont know what real good kung fu is.
@teamlents801410 жыл бұрын
Hagood is into Southern as well, I talk with him on a regular basis but as I said he trained with Grandmaster Park in the mid 70's while in the Army. I complimented the man but never said it was good Wu Shu. I trained with two 73 yr old original Grandmasters in Northern Mantis both if whom are from North Korea. They left and went South to join the fight against the North, never to see their families again. I trained with them, ate with them, worked with them, and laughed with them. I know "good kung fu" as I then assume you must as well.

The kata is a form but a kata does not have similar movement . A pinion has very similar movement threw out the pinion . A form is both of them
