I did some research and ended up with a 2017 4x4, 5.0, 6R80, It's also just an XL, with 100,000 miles. I am on a few Facebook F150 pages. If I listened to the FB people, I would not have bought this truck, Nothing but problems with ANY F150. Thankfully, I wasn't on FB at that time, but I did listen to Mason and The Ford Boss. Glad I did what I did. When I put the peddle down all the way, my wifes head hits the headrest, she grabs the the arm rest and says,,,"why does anybody need to go that fast?' Well Sweetiepie.....because I can!

I just purchased a 2016 F150 with a 5.0 thanks to Rich. It has a perfect maintenance history. Oil every 5K Trans and coolant every 40K. One owner and all service done at the dealer where it was purchased. I need to do plugs, transfer and diff fluid as soon as possible. I started looking just after your best truck ever video. It took over six months to find a supercab with one owner and perfect maintenance. Thank You BOSS MAN

Got a 19 new with 3.5 Ecoboost. First, it was the 10 speed. After multiple trips to dealership, got that fixed. Six months after transmission was fixed, I got the cold start rattle. Had the 21+ cam phasers put in, chains and tensioners, guides… and it feels better than new. Keep it serviced, and get this stuff fixed before it runs out of warranty.

My boss had a 2014 coyote w/ 400k+ miles on it. Never had a major issue. Never even pulled a valve cover. The truck even had a 4" lift and oversized tires. My 2012 ecoboost has 176k, and runs great.

Mechanically, I think a true handyman with a lift can maintain the seals and gaskets for the turbo if he knows how to lift the cab otherwise it’s such a pain, but doable need a welder and learn how to well and get broken studs out. I have a 2015 platinum with 68,000 miles new engine at 48,000 just recently got new fuel pump warranty covered paid $580 for transmission flush with new filter and gasket. Thank you for making all these videos. You and Mason have done a very good deed for all of us Ford owners. I am gonna install the lift one day. lol

Hey Rich, I had a feeling that you were gonna respond to Mason’s video, which I did see last night. I am glad that you put your thought into it as well. I always heard that you don’t go by one person’s recommendation, get a second opinion, and you delivered well. I always get my inputs from you, Mason, and Brian at FordTechMakuloco about ford vehicles, especially my 2019 F-150. When buying an F-150, get a second opinion or a third opinion. For me, all I can do is service my F-150. 5,000 mile oil changes, Pensoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic. Service my fluid and filter on my 10R80 and my front and rear differential every 60,000 miles. Service my transfer case every 30,000 miles. Just keep it serviced well and do it religiously, is what I go by. I always appreciate your input and your service. Have a great day, sir!

Right on the money! We have 2019s on the fleet and they all either had new 10 spds, new 5.0s, or both installed all around 80k and 120k miles. Plus the burning of oil, 2 qrts in 1500 miles. We just got one back finally with a new 5.0 installed by the dealer after waiting since Feb '23. 11 months waiting for an engine!

To continue, the truck that got the new engine from Ford now has the trans failing for a second time. And my truck that developed #6 misfire was found to have broken valvetrain and the shop won't touch it any further and are now on a hunt for another engine. Definitely stay away from 2019 F150s!

I had driven one of those earlier 10 speeds with an Ecoboost, in a new Enterprise rental F150. I’m a fussy guy about transmission operation, that truck did impress me, but I was not at all interested in owning any vehicle with such a complicated motor and transmission. My 14 E250 has the 4.6 and a normal automatic. I don’t care it lacks the fuel economy of the Echoboost and 10 speed, the motor and transmission are tried and true for many miles, that’s what’s important to me.

Had several 6R80 transmissions in my fleet and most of them went past 250k miles without any issues with regular maintenance. Such as with the last version of the 5.4 2009+ went past 300k miles with just proper regular maintenance.

I bought the 2015, 5.0 with 6spd (4dr XLT) partially because Fordbossme identified it and the 2016 5.0 model as the best of the bunch - for various reasons. 297k miles and mine runs and looks nearly perfect. I DID have to put in the newer version of the transmission "lead frame" when it downshifted to 2nd gear by itself on the hwy. I stopped driving it after that, fixed it, and it never happened again. But all of the newer F150s needed the new/upgraded trans part located right behind the trans fluid pan. Not a hard job and no reprogramming required for the authentic Ford version (I cant speak for the rest, such as Dorman brand). The Ford brand lead frame sets its own shift perimeters after driving some.

Hey Rich, love the new channel picture! I own a 2016 F150 XLT 5.0, 6-speed with 282,000 miles on it. No major repairs only maintenance issues. I wasn't looking for a truck when I bought it. it was my bosses truck. He changed oil at the quick oil change places every 10k. I've got the records to prove that. He was trading it in because it stalled at idle and wanted something else. I bought it for the trade in value, which was low due to the issue. I drove it and began changing the oil every 4k. I wound up changing the VCT Solenoids and that fixed the issue. There was no sludge in the top end and only normal wear on the cams. I thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Your segments on oil testing are the best! (viewers need to see those if you haven't already) I tried a few different synthetics and landed on Pennzoil as my oil of choice. I'll end now, but your opinion is valued highly by this ole guy. Hopefully I can get a few more miles out of the truck, runs good and is solidly built. Best wishes and be safe.

I have one, too and have to laugh when all the guys with early Ecoboosts (not wishing trouble on anyone) who raved about how fast they were are now talking about bad cam phasers and oil burning. It may not be a rocket ship but mine is a regular cab 3,73 and will lay rubber and fly pretty well. The most important part though, is that it has never given me ANY trouble. It's a great motor unless you have an 8000 lb trailer, for daily work though it is great.

@jimmyhorton829711 ай бұрын
@@gregsmith983 , yeah, mine skips gears also, but when you have it under load it usually shifts through the gears. Mine was shifting noticeably hard between 4 and 5, but I thought it was just the programming. I took it in last November to have the APIM module for the radio replaced ( another common failure), and some other issues. When the mechanic drove it, he decided he wanted to pull the transmission and check it. It ended up being the bushing that Rich was talking about in this video. It had basically shifted into the clutches and destroyed the transmission. Took the dealer a month to get all the parts to fix it. Then about a week after I got it back, my purge valve failed. So, I’ve had some issues over the last 6 to 8 months, but overall it’s been a good truck. I opted to get the Ford Extended Service Plan when I bought it, and instead of paying thousands for the transmission, 1300 or so for the APIM module, and 4 or 5 hundred to have the purge valve replaced, I payed a couple hundred bucks for the deductible on the service plan and they gave me a 2023 XLT to drive while my truck was in service. So I can’t complain to much.
@gregsmith98311 ай бұрын
Sounds like you have had some issues. I have the 18 5.0 XLT just had the oil consumption did on it was a quart low after 5,000 miles at least it wasn’t after 1500 like others I’ve read about and I’ve had to change APIUM also in mine couple months ago.

2017 5.0 6R80. 118k now. Love this truck. Left me stranded once, in my driveway,lol! Lead frame, of course! I’m in the car repair business. I’d take a ford over GM or Ram. Both are beautiful trucks, but the GM lifter/ pushrod issues and the Ram hemi lifter tick and trans issues leaves a little to be desired. Guy I work with with a 2023 Silverado 6.2 has spent more time at the dealer with fuel pump issues…he’s trying to get it covered under lemon law. Left him on the side of the road twice already. He’s had it 3 mos. I will say, IMO, the big 3 all have their problems. But, at least the Fords body won’t rot out, lol!

My opinion is that a lot of the 3.5 EB issues come from poor maintenance. I have a 2015 F150 with the 3.5 EB that has 184k and all original except vacuum pump and lead frame. But I am a maintenance fanatic. 3k oil changes with Motorcraft filters and Amsoil. Transmission fluid/filter every 50k. I also drive my truck every day with almost no stop and go city driving. It also gets worked hard towing heavy quite a bit. IMO these 3.5 EB engines are meant to be driven and worked. IF I don't go with a gasser Super Duty for my next truck. It will be another 3.5 EB. I do agree on the 10 speed tranny. I don't want it, don't need it and don't like it.

When it comes to Ford ANYTHING there are two people who I would trust their word above anybody else. You are one of them and Arod is the other. ESPECIALLY when it comes to Ford trucks. NEVER trust a car or truck salesperson when you're buying a vehicle. Always seek out the guys that work on them to find out what the potential problems might happen. Also, remember ONE thing, there is no such thing as the PERFECT vehicle, they ALL have problems somewhere. The trick is minimizing what they are going to be and think in terms of cost. It's a lot cheaper to replace an Alternator than replacing something in your Engine or Transmission.

Had new plugs and coil packs at 100,000 miles. Truck runs like new.
@mikelemoine426711 ай бұрын
The 4.6 engines have a coolant tube under the intake that likes to leak a bit, that is a more likely culprit. It's a PITA to get to for a novice mechanic, but not that bad for an experienced one, and much easier than many of the things Rich mentioned to expect on the 3.5EB.

@@mikelemoine4267 well I've got a lot of vapor out exhaust until reaches operating temperature.
@mikelemoine426711 ай бұрын
@@dugie5246 Could be a HG but it's hard to say without testing it. I'd get a compression test or at least check for exhaust gases in the cooling system, you can buy a cheap kit to test for that. If you have a bad HG and remove the spark plugs, the one with the HG issue will look cleaner or may have some coloring to it from the antifreeze. Good luck and hope it's a cheap fix. These can go 300K+ if cared for.

@@dugie5246 Nice! I did that to a Jeep Liberty that had a slight HG leak and high miles. It wasn't worth swapping an engine but the gasket seal fixed it 100% and kept it going for quite a while. The guy I sold it to said it's still going. Hopefully it'll hold up in yours too.

I have an old 2004 heritage f150 that I bought new with 4.6 v6 and a stick, and I love that truck 120k a d I only have had to replace a steering pump and an alternator. Do you like the old 4.6 and recently it has developed an intermittent high pitched squeal from under the hood that almost sounds like a vacuum leak but louder. Does any one have an idea of the source of this noise? Could it be the idler pulley bearing?

I’ve got a 23 bronco with the 2.7 and 10 spd….bought brand new so I’m the only one doing maintenance….retired from ford as a heavy line tech in 2012….so I’m not up on what’s good or bad…hear all kinds of stories about what’s good or bad but I take them with a grain of salt….too many variables the way people drive and take care of their stuff. I’ve heard good things about the 2.7 but not much on the 10 spd…when I heard about the 10 spd I’m like why? What in the world would ya need all those gears for? Just more things to go wrong…..after going over the Bronco in general it seems like a fairly basic rig other than the 10 spd and electronics….easy to get at most everything. I thought driving the 10 spd would be annoying with all the busy shifting but I don’t notice it much. Hoping with the factory warranty anything that is prone to fail will within that time frame….i love the rig overall ..the way it drives, handles , power , looks etc…Seems like ford did a decent job with the entire platform and hitting the market perfectly for some people.

Great video. If you were going to order a new transit 350 2024 only used for moving people. Not worried about power. What engine and transmission would you go with for longevity?
@FordBossMe11 ай бұрын
I wouldn't order a 2024 transit to be honest with you you're going to be replacing the brakes every 25 to 30,000 miles on the rear and every time you do rear brakes it's probably going to cost you about $700 to $1,000 to do the rear brakes because the calipers like to lock up on them and there is extra parts that are involved because you have to remove the axles to change the brakes on this vehicle and 10-speed transmission is Shifting all over the place so if I was to get a Transit it wouldn't be a newer one it would be an older one like a 2016-17 model with a 6-speed transmission and a just regular V6 naturally aspirated no Turbo

I respect your views , I am a older mechanic , last time I worked on cars ( for pay ) back in 1990, I hurt my back , went to school , got in to claims adjuster , did that for over 15 years . But I want to know , how do you feel about the 2000 Lincoln town car with the 4.6 , miles around 140, I did the intake , plugs , coils , fuel injectors , upper and lower ball joints , belts Hoses , I live in California , no rust , I am the second owner , runs great , no leaks , no oil Oil consumption problems. What do you think ??

Those year cars are awesome ….the only common concern I’ve run across is the power distribution box under the hood on the drivers inner fender corroding ….typically issues in the snow belts only ….4.6 and the 4r70w trans are bullet proof with normal maintenance….even if there is an issue with those cars they are usually reasonably cheap in comparison to repair.
