I used to hate math especially when it became more difficult during the end of elementary school and all throughout the rest of my public school education, I’m 29 years old and intentionally reviewing all of this information to be able to better teach my daughters when they reach this point. My eldest is homeschooled in second grade but I’m also facing my past and slowly loving math as a grown woman. I never thought I actually would understand it and enjoy it! I’m hopeful that my daughters won’t struggle the way I did! Please never get rid of this course! I’ll use it again for my eldest! 😂

I received an associate in business back in 2018 and I just recently decided to go back for Environmental Science, which will need some math credits. I haven't really had to do much algebra in years so I totally forgot all the little rules such as going left to right during the order of operations. I do remember PEMDAS, but I incorrectly took it literally and did multiplication before division instead of whichever comes first left to right. I've watched about an hour a day for the past few days and all these little rules are helping me remember the basics so I don't end up lost when I have to take some of my upcoming math classes.

I am so much enjoying this course. I am on the order of operations. I finally understand it. PEMDAS, when I first memorized this - I did not understand the left to right in working the problem when it comes to multiply, division, addition and subtraction. I could never understand when I was in class when the teacher was teaching Algebra, and it was not explained fully the left to right. I remember thinking, that when I think the answer is one way, it is another answer. I was so confused and frustrated. Thanks to your tutorial I was able to understand this principal. At one time I hated math, but now I am beginning to love it. I will continue with the videos and learning. I feel like I want to go back to college. 17:33 Expanded notation is writing the number in a long form by multiplying each digit by its place value. Expanded means long-form (for all the ESL folk out there). Notation is a word used in mathematics and it means how numbers are written. For example 10 is short notation. 1x10+0×1 is expanded notation. So 10 in expanded notation is 10+0.

I am a 29-year-old man who graduated from high school and college. However, I never fully understood subjects like Algebra, Geometry, Pre Calculus, Calculus, or Statistics. Though I was not terrible at math, I used to forget formulas and make mistakes which made it difficult for me to solve problems. So, I have decided to go back and engage in some self-study to understand where I went wrong and how I can improve my skills. Thanks for the video. I think it was during my 9th and 10th grade years when things became increasingly challenging. In 9th grade, we only had substitute teachers and no regular teacher. In 10th and 11th grade, the professors appeared to be upset because most of us had difficulties in the class. Finally, in senior year, the entire class was conducted online.

I have some computer background and would like to learn Machine Learning as a career change. However, I am very poor in Maths and looking for a course which explains in detail from scratch. I have watched a few videos and most of them jumps directly into 'linear equation, exponential,...' which I stopped after a few since I don't get the concept. And I cannot take face-to-face courses due to family commitment. I am lucky that I found this video where I can learn all in one place (from high school to undergrad to graduate levels) while sitting at home. Thanks a lot Mr. Greene. You are a life saver.

@@Greenemath yeah. Maybe.. but I think, the main problem with school is u can't pause and replay.. Btw the way, is the remainder of long division accurate??. Cause sometimes when I was practicing long decision I always check my answer on a calculator and sometimes the remainder is diff, daws dhat mean dhat it's inaccurate?? Or maybe I made a mistake in calculating?
@Greenemath Жыл бұрын
@Zaidmusic988 When you divide on a calculator it is using the decimal form of the answer. We will get to this during the decimal portion of the course, it's towards the end. Let's say you have something like 9/4. 9/4 = 2 R1 Since 2 * 4 + 1 = 8 + 1 = 9 In other words, you take 9 boxes and split them up into groups of 4 boxes, you will get 2 groups (4 * 2 = 8) with 1 leftover (8 + 1 = 9), this is the remainder. With a calculator, it is going to take the remainder and divide it by 4. 1/4 = 0.25 So the answer from a calculator would just be: 9/4 = 2.25

You can make it as far as you would like. The main thing is to do lots of practice when you are at the basic level (Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1). This will make things a lot easier as you progress.

@ 04:41 For everyone in the world except the USA, England and a few other "outsiders": The recognized reference system (from Latin) since the 15th century is the long scale system. The US and a few others, as usual, have to do everything differently. Reference: Million (10^6), Milliard (10^9), Billion (10^12), Billiard (10^15), etc. In the USA, all other steps are simply ignored and a completely new number system is used. The "short scale system".

The metric system and using commas in the place of a decimal point is also a big difference.

I wish they taught us Math like this in school. In my school, they taught us the algorithm to use to get the answer. But we weren't taught the logic behind it. So it was all about memorizing steps with little or no understanding of the concepts of logic behind the steps. This is not a good way to learn. Understanding should have priority over memorizing. When you understand, memory comes easier because the steps are more meaningful. And even if you did forget some steps, because you understand the concepts, you can actually figure it out with logical deduction. But with no understanding of concepts, you're completely lost if you forget something.

6:47:35 I really surprised myself that the only mistake I made was forgetting to keep the absolute value sign around 4+(-16) so I added -27 and 4 then -23+(-16) so I got -39. instead of adding 4+(-16) to get -12 converting it to its absolute value to then add -27+12 resulting in -15. The end result was -15/-3 = 5 instead of 9/-3=-3. small mistakes like forgetting absolute value and switching numbers from positive to negative and vice versa trip me up. i need to learn to slow down and recheck my work.

The problem with teaching students things like PEMDAS (in math) or FANBOYS (in English) is that they will remember the acronym itself and then mentally associate each letter with a meaning, a process that by definition they will have to carry out every time they want to remember. It is actually much easier, in the long run, to force them to remember the actual meaning from the beginning even if it is a lot to remember. Having a medium to help one remember is only functional if it is a whole thing, such as associating π (Pi) with an actual pie in order to visually remember that it represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. I can say from personal experience that PEMDAS has actually been at the very core of most of my difficulties in high school with higher level math (where it's all about the order of operations) precisely due to the exact same reason you just mentioned. Thank you for what you do!
@Greenemath Жыл бұрын
If you work enough problems, it should stick with you. There are lots of people that remember PEMDAS but then don't understand the MD and AS steps are worked left to right. It's a constant struggle as I get people commenting that "I am wrong" or "that isn't how it works". A simple check with an online calculator is all one needs to prove the result. Good luck and thanks for being a channel member.
@chrisalex001 Жыл бұрын
@@Greenemath Yes, especially the fact that MD and AS work as one unit. So PEMDAS is truly more like P,E,MD,AS, where left to right establishes the priority of operation for MD and for AS.
@Greenemath Жыл бұрын
@chrisalex001 We definitely need a new way to say it but I'm sure that won't ever happen since this one is established.

@@Greenemath I like GEMA: Groupings -> Exponents -> Multiplicative Operations -> Additive Operations. Groupings could be indicated several different ways, like division bars, brackets, function inputs, common superscript, etc, so groupings is more general than parentheses only. This also requires you to realize that division is ultimately a form of multiplication, and likewise that subtraction is ultimately a form of addition. There's still the underlying disputed order of operation issue, on whether implied multiplication by juxtaposition has priority over division. Middle school teachers, at least in the US, treat all multiplication the same regardless of notation, while professionals commonly give priority to juxtaposition. It certainly simplifies notation to give priority to juxtaposition, so you can write 1/2x instead of 1/(2x).
