Ocean County - Brick Township - 136 Northrup Dr. - Second Alarm.
At 2:00 AM Brick Township dispatched a working structure fire at 136 Northrup Drive, arriving officers found smoke coming out of a multiple dwelling attached end of the row. It was determined the fire was inside the 1st floor unit. Crews stretched a 1.3/4 line inside and quickly knocked down the fire on the first floor. Crews checked for extension and found none. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Stations, 23,24,22,21,75 all responded to the scene.

@ritirons2726
@ritirons2726 2 ай бұрын
There was no reason at all to break the windows at the point during the incident in which they did. Breaking windows is to create immediate ventilation of the fire area to facilitate safer fire attack, increase the chances for locating possible victims, and firefighter egress in the event they need to escape rapidly deteriorating conditions. All of which normally occur early in the incident while the fire is still being brought under control. None of those conditions existed. They could have simply opened the windows and allowed the smoke to ventilate naturally or used them to methodically control positive pressure ventilation. This was nothing more than senseless destruction of property.

There were 3 chiefs on the scene of this fire within the first ten mins, more after that. The one you saw at first was the ops chief and the other was a different district chief, another held command on the A side more FF on the ground working the better. In this case they weren’t needed for chief duty’s so they got to work!
@ritirons2726
@ritirons2726 2 ай бұрын
That was quite possibly the slowest operation I’ve ever seen. Even the chief officers were dragging their feet. Pathetic. Then they break out the windows well after knocking the fire down. They could have just opened them at that point. Not only did they lose the ability to perform positive pressure ventilation correctly, they destroyed property needlessly. Remember that protection of life AND PROPERTY we all supposedly learned?

Generally you’re correct, these guys love breaking window way after the fact where there’s no added affect. However, youre not gonna do positive pressure ventilation in this scenario under any circumstances, maybe hydraulic while they’re doing overhaul, but you would really only need to bust out one window for that.

@@bobbys1984 Vertical ventilation does not and should not be performed at every fire. The majority of times it has little to no effect on the operation and results in unnecessary property damage. Vertical ventilation should be reserved for single story buildings, fires on the top floor, fires in the cockloft/attic space, and on some occasions in ballon frame style buildings. Those are the fires that vertical ventilation will be beneficial, not a first floor fire in a two or multiple story building. This is the result of members just doing it because “that’s what we’re supposed to do” instead of understanding building construction as well as the correct type ventilation for that particular building.

I like looking at any fire videos, and it is amazing the lack of training that some firefighters go through. We have volunteer firemen in England but they undergo the same training as full time crews. The biggest difference seems to be water, in England they normally have water on the fire within a minute, using the on board water. In the states too much reliance seems to be put on connecting to a hydrant. However I can only form an opinion from what I'm seeing on the video.
@bobbys1984
@bobbys1984 2 ай бұрын
I mean there’s a couple things I have to refute here. First, volunteers do get the same initial training that our paid guys get as well. However, this training is a crash course in the NFPA standard and pretty much ends there. When it comes to training, there’s no better training than real life incidents. Theres no adversity with simulation. Second, every department in the US has their own SOGs. Some departments go in forward lay and some go in dry. My department goes forward lay and we’re able to get water on the fire very quickly but we have a lot experience. However, I don’t think it’s incredibly necessary when you’re working in a paid dept. and there are second arriving companies only another minute or two out. In addition, most interior attacks can be held substantially by 500-750 gallons of tank water.

But let’s critique… there’s 2 chiefs and a handful of cops on scene and no one checks to see if the door is open while fiddling their thumbs waiting for FFs? Also, why is no one working on the force entry while they’re Scotting up? You can just tell they dont do this shit often.
