Carla Burnside was the refuge archaeologist at Malheur from 1990 through the 2016. She worked extensively with the Burns Paiute Tribe and the Harney County Historical Society while she was at the refuge. During her 26 years at the refuge, she worked on Native American sites, as well as at historic ranches and homesteads and at a variety of Civilian Conservation Corps sites on the refuge. Carla now works with the Division of Refuge Law Enforcement as the Coordinator for a program that protects archaeological and historic sites on National Wildlife Refuges.
APOLOGIES that this video recording was not initiated during the introduction by FOMR Director, Janelle Wicks. We promise that you did not miss much and the content in this presentation is still rich and worth the watch! What is missing is an acknowledgement of the existence of Malheur NWR on the land which remains today to be the ancestral territory of the Wadatika Band of Northern Paiute, federally recognized today as the Burns Paiute Tribe.
