Hi Briana :) It is 100% natural to feel nervous and scared about the decision of becoming a nurse but if it is your passion and something you have been called to do....go for it! It is an amazing profession that allows you to care for others and work in exciting times with technology and medical treatments. I recommend possibly job shadowing a nurse for a day and see if you like it. Many local hospitals offer this if you ask them. Also, you could volunteer or get a job as a nursing assistant. This will expose you to nursing and let you know if this is something you want to do. Best wishes with your decision :)

I was wondering if you think taking some courses online would be a good idea? I'm a mom of 3 and work a day a week with my dance troupe. Anyways, I haven't completed any pre-reqs yet but need to start slow at first until my youngest gets to school in about 2 years. When she goes to school I'll have much more free time to start hitting the school-work load up to 4 classes hopefully. Was thinking of Clep-ing out of some "basic" classes and/or doing some online. Just wondered if that's a good idea? I'm about to take an entrance exam to get into the community college here in Houston. Thanks for any advice. And thank you so much for posting these videos. Its been helping me so much, I'm sure being in nursing school is tough, but just watching these videos and others I've seen, actually excites me. :)

@RegisteredNurseRN

+Dawn Payne Excellent questions, Dawn! Thanks for your questions and for watching my videos :) Yes, online classes are awesome (I took some while in nursing school) and loved them. I got to study on my own time and most importantly didn't have to drive back and forth and spend time in class (which is a major time sink when you have kids). I think the online classes will work out great for you as a mom of 3. About the CLEP exams, absolutely!! I highly recommend you look into this and test out of the classes you want. We actually have a video about this and Ben goes into depth about them (kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6CwqmSIotStfZY). I would buy the study guide for the class you want to clep out of and study it. Clepping out of classes will save you money in tuition and most importantly time. What entrance exam are you taking? I recommend getting the study for that particular exam and studying for it. If it is the ATI TEAS V, I just made a video on how to study for it (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaHGZGCYfdd1rKc). Nursing school is very much worth it! I hope my website and channel can help you in your journey :) I wish you the best! If you have other questions don't hesitate to ask! -Sarah

+RegisteredNurseRN thanks for your reply and all the advice. I'll check out Ben's video for the Clep testing, sounds great! I'm interested in the community colleges nursing program. There's a school just down the road, so that's great! They do the HESi entrance, and offer the ASN to transfer to a BSN school. Since living in Houston I have a lot of options for BSN. I would like to get to nurse practitioner someday (probably when I'm 80 lol) for sports and ortho nursing. I used to be a "ballerina," so I thought a degree in the medical field would be a perfect correlation to dancing. But in case that didn't work out (because of stress and time). Just nursing would be fine for me. :) Thanks again.
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 9 жыл бұрын
+Dawn Payne You're very welcome, Dawn! I took the HESI A2 entrance exam for nursing school and it wasn't that bad. I recommend guide the HESI A2 study manual made by the company and that you practice questions. I think that is awesome you are wanting to go for a NP later on. What is funny is that I went to nursing school with a girl who was a ballerina too. She had the opportunity to dance with a company in New York but turned it down to go to nursing school (because she said she wanted to have a degree in case dancing didn't work out). She actually ended loving nursing more and is going for her NP now. So ballerinas also become nurses too haha. I wish you the best :)
@dawnpayne1793
@dawnpayne1793 9 жыл бұрын
+RegisteredNurseRN Wow, that's cool about the ballerina you met. I wasn't "professional" like NY professional but was in a company for 2 years. It was fun! I think I will like nursing. I've always had an excitement about the medical field. If I didn't have dance I think I would've pursued it a lot younger. I did take a practice HESi A2 online and I got a pretty great score without even studying, or knowing what was going on, so hopefully it'll be easy once I study for it. lol!

this video helped me so much! being a nurse is my dream job, but I'm having issues on deciding what path to take. I'm thinking about going to a community college and get my associates there, and then transfer to a university to get my bachelors. do you know how long that would take?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Valerie :) It should take about 3-4 years to be completed totally. Many times you can get your associates from a community college and then complete an online BSN program (these programs can be completed in about 3-4 semesters...depending on the program you attend). So, overall from start to finish it may take you about 3.5-4 years. I hope that helps. Best wishes!

@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 9 жыл бұрын
+I Will Thanks for your comment. Congrats on becoming a CNA! Yes, hospitals often hire CNAs with no experience. Many provide on-the-job training and/or help you find the certifications or training you need if you lack anything. My advice would be to look at hospitals in your area, and maybe even contact a recruiter or Human Resource manager to discuss it with them. I wish you the best of luck in your new career!

Thank you so much for this video Sarah =). I was wondering about something. Would working as a lifeguard before going into nursing be beneficial to include in your resume when you're looking for your first nursing job once you graduate?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 8 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, Eymari :) Absolutely! I think working as a lifeguard would look great on your resume....you will be CPR certified and working in a position where you are protecting people's lives...great experience. One thing I would suggest is to make sure you get a letter of recommendation (or someone you can use as a reference) so you can submit this with your resume or nursing portfolio. This could be your instructor from your lifeguard class, boss, a fellow colleague (preferably someone who was over you like a manager etc). I hope you're having a great summer :)

You can do it. I am a single mom of 3 children with no other family or relatives and I work as CNA/HHA and I work at my school as well. It is not easy but you can always do it. Just don't give up. I'm in the community college cause I don't want to owe anything. Apply FAFSA and apply for work study. You can work at your school.

+Alexander Kellett 4.0 is an excellent GPA! Yes, generally speaking, it is possible to be accepted into other nursing programs if you decide to quit or fail. Every nursing school is a bit different on their requirements and so forth. It would probably look best if you withdrew or transferred prior to failing, though. I wish you the best of luck in nursing school!

+RegisteredNurseRN Thank you! I am in a community college right now and I am failing one class. Most everyone is. But i am passing my Assessment and Pharmacology. Would it be wise for me to keep the classes that i pass to save on my record and withdraw the class I fail? If i withdrew the one class that I am failing it would mean I wouldn't be in the nursing program anymore. I'm just not liking this program here as much as I thought I would.
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 9 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend consulting with an advisor at your school before making a decision. They would be able to inform you about the specifics of your program and how withdrawing may affect you. Also, sometimes withdrawing can affect scholarships or financial aid, so keep that in mind.

well I want to take academic strategies courses for writing so I will practice for my other English classes I need. so I will do better since in the first one I needed two points for B. however, there are two professors I am looking according ratemyprofessors.com there is one with 4.3 rating but intervenes with my academic course, but the other professor is 3.6, which I can take, but I am a bit nervous since admission directors want an A in anatomy. I am scared because I hear rumors of anatomy being hard and the professor who fits my schedule is 3.6 and the other one who doesn't fits my schedule is 4.3 ._. please help me
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 9 жыл бұрын
+Cari Baez It can help to take the easier teacher, but you also want to read the comments and see what people are saying about the teacher, too. It's a tough decision. If you can find a way to tweak your schedule, you may want to go with the better rated teacher. If not, then you can plan to set aside more time to study for the other teacher, and maybe even start reading or studying during your break before the class begins. You may even be able to find someone who has taken the one teacher, and ask them tips on how to best approach the class and what to study. Either way, I wish you the best of luck.

I'm considering getting my CNA certification during my senior year, so I'll have some knowledge under my belt before going into college for nursing. What's the difference between an RN and getting a BSN?
@RegisteredNurseRN
@RegisteredNurseRN 9 жыл бұрын
+24 Limitless That is an awesome idea about getting your CNA certification. Great question! When you become a registered nurse, you have the option of getting a BSN degree or ADN degree. The BSN degree is a bachelor's degree and it takes about 4 years to obtain. An ADN degree is an associates degree and it takes 2 years to complete. A nurse with an ADN and BSN degree are both registered nurses and do the same thing. A BSN is a registered nurse who has passed the NCLEX. So, there isn't a difference...it is just a matter of lingo. Here is a video about ADN and BSN: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGPUcodtd7Z5rbs -Sarah

Alicia 24 I'm not a nurse yet but my mom is. My suggestion in regards to adn vs bsn is look at where you will want to work after school. If you're in a small town & have no plans to move out of rural areas adn is most likely a great option for you. If you are planning to work in a big city or prestigious hospital I would get a bsn at least. The nursing field is changing. Lpn's are unfortunately just glorified nurses aids. Many hospitals now only hire nurses with a ban or higher. My mom worked at Standford hospital for over 5 years when they enacted a policy that all nurses must earn their bsn & my mom was forced to go back to school or lose her job.

+Daniela Taborda Great question! Online nursing school programs are becoming very popular. I think they are great, especially for mothers who want to obtain a nursing degree. I would just make sure the programs you are looking at are accredited (ACEN or CCNE) and ask them what their NCLEX pass rates are among students. This will tell you if it is a good program or not. Also, look and see if you can go part-time until you start to feel more comfortable if you are worried about managing time (I know it is very hectic with kids). Ben made a video on online nursing programs that you may find helpful here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHabgnl7qbGkgZo I hope that helps :)

+Daniela Taborda yeah time is definitely weird like that. 😞 I'll have 2 kids in school come fall, and will have the other in in about 2 years. So I figured I'd just do an online class or two until I can commit more time, even then I might only do up to 4 classes. Then volunteer part-time during the summer for those on-the-job hours needed.
