This video explains what you need to know about your pre-operative assessment. The
pre-Operative assessment is a chance for us to gather more information and perform extra
tests if necessary. Every patient is booked to see one of the pre-operative nurses, but some
patients may be booked to see an anaesthetic consultant for further assessment and to discuss options for pain relief.
Within the pre-operative assessment a nurse will take your medical history, listen to
your heart and lungs. Basic measures such as height, weight and blood pressure will be
taken.
Blood tests (baseline and blood typing) will be required. You may also have a heart recording
or 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG), a skin swab from your nose and groin to test for MRSA
bacteria. You may also have other bacterial and virus screening tests if appropriate (such as
CRE or COVID-19.
