As a graduate from Ray’s Ambassador’s Academy I can tell you exactly what we were taught. It’s not about getting people to think constructively. It more about pointing people to the fact that they don’t live up to the standards of the Bible. And even showing them that the street preacher himself doesn’t live up to Bible’s standards either . Like he says in the video, “If I tell a lie, what would you call me?” To help them feel comfortable calling themselves a liar. Then getting them to admit that if the Bible is correct then they are going Hell. Most Americans have a Christian background so the idea of Hell does scare them. What they do is point out that “if the Bible is true” then they admit they should goto Hell. They call that “appealing to the conscience”. Because they believe the law of God is “written on everyone’s heart”. So they believe they are just reminding them of what they already know, they can’t live up to the standards of the Bible. Then they can swoop in with a “cure”. That cure is Jesus.

I started watching a video of MCToon having a "discussion" with a Christian about the shape of the Earth. I wasn't able to watch the whole video because the Creationist wouldn't stop talking long enough for MCToon to answer his questions and because of hearing issues when two or more people are talking at the same time, I can't follow the conversation anymore. Then I get stressed and overly tired to care enough to make the effort required to understand. Something I appreciate about your videos, Paul, for the most part only one voice is speaking at a time. Anyway what struck me most about MCToon's conversation was how much the creationist couldn't fathom the fact that MCToon is a Christian but he accepts that evolution is real and the Earth is a globe. The creationist kept bringing up the Bible and MCToon kept reminding him that it was possible to have different interpretations of Scripture and that most of the Christians of the world do not share the interpretations of the Creationist. The YEC even accused MCToon of being a liar for saying he was a Christian and not taking the same view as him.. It was quite clear that the YEC was not at all interested in hearing what MCToon had to say. And so communication between two people was impossible. There could be no real exchange of ideas. Now I'll grant that most participants in KZbin debates ae more interested in scoring points and winning the argument then actually trying to understand the other person's viewpoint. But isn't that what happens so often in everyday conversations where there is a difference of opinion? I believe your guest Anthony made some very good suggestions not just for would-be street epistemologists but for anyone wishing to have an honest dialogue with another person. I hope to keep all that in mind whenever I enter a discussion. Lately, when I get into a back and forth on KZbin commentary, if I see that the other person is only interested in scoring gotchas, or is being very dogmatic in his beliefs and dismissive of my arguments or opinions, or starts being abusive and calling me a liar or whatever, I politely state the futility of either of us trying to convince the other and decline to continue the discussion. That way I don't waste the little energy I have on a fruitless exercise and risk getting angry over it, a further depletion of precious energy. Thanks for your always interesting content.
@kathryngeeslin95093 жыл бұрын
Even if someone is focused on "winning", on convincing someone else to their point of view, this approach is far better, far more effective. "You're all wrong and I'm all right" or "you're being silly, foolish, stupid" hardly temps anyone to the speaker's side. Therefore, I have always felt that "gotcha" interviewers are simply trying to build their egos and possibly make their followers feel superior. Even a manipulative asshole who actually wants to convince a target of a different belief would meet in the middle and begin the tug-of-war there and be less obvious in directing the conversation.

This was so cool. I'm a theist, but I know Anthony's channel and besides yours, Paul, it is one of my favorite "skeptical" channels on KZbin. I loved listening to the contrasts in approach between Ray Comfort's videos and Anthony's, and I agree with everything that was said. I have also gotten the sense in watching Mr. Comfort that he's out there to "gotcha" people, and even though he and I share a belief in God, I doubt he would like my views on the subject---we disagree almost as sharply on the nature of God as Ray and Atheists do---but his style of "gotcha" evangelism certainly wouldn't do anything to shake my current beliefs, or convince me that he's got the right God. In contrast, I have noticed and very much appreciate the calm, measured, *fair* approach of Street Epistemology, and as a scientist, skeptic, and logic-oriented person myself, that speaks so much more powerfully to me. I actually love having this kind of discussion with people who are curious about my faith, because I have spend a lot of time and effort dissecting my own views and questioning my own assumptions. I think it's healthy and, honestly, the only real path to truth. I wish more people in both the Theist and the Atheist camps would do that. (I tend to find that, for all the respect I have for Atheists, they tend to fall into the trap of not questioning their assumptions/tribe nearly as much as Christians do. I gotta say I'd LOVE to be street epistomology'd by Anthony precisely BECAUSE he seems to be trying to get at my personal understanding. I feel like I don't really challenge my own beliefs terribly often, and his process looks like a spectacularly compassionate and nuanced way of exploring them. :D

Now y'all just need Vaush to join, and then you'll have a 3 musketeers situation. Edit: Paul has always struck me as being very ethical in his questioning, and his attempt to have fair discourse. So I'm not surprised that these two have a lot of mutual points of view. Thanks for having him on.

Doesn't Ray's tactics look bad enough already without comparing it to Anthony's work? It may be comparing apples to apples, but one of the apples has worms. I don't know if Ray's methods are successful very often. But if they are, it seems more like emotional manipulations are more relevant than logic or epistemology. Props to Anthony's work. He's ethical and respectful, and actually cares about what people think.

I have spoken to a number of educated theists on this subject, a few quite fundamentalists, and none have expressed any admiration or support for Comforts approach. Most simply find it dishonest and all agree it adds nothing to the conversation. I'm not actually certain it's intended to sway anyone. He's literally preaching to the choir, showing a subset of true believers dishonest tricks that they think will let them convert atheists. Thats actually what Ray is selling (figuratively and literally): "buy my shtick and you too can bring atheists too God" If they try it in the real world, they soon discover that it converts nobody.

Good to see Anthony getting his props. I remember reading about how when you argue with someone they very often leave the argument more convinced than when they started. When I'm talking with people on FB I really make a concerted effort to ask questions to make sure I'm understanding the other side. I like to think I've always tended towards that style of argument but Anthony's videos have certainly given me good instruction in how to do it better. It's funny, I'm an out in the weeds lefty-atheist, but I often find myself arguing with people on the left... not over goals, but over technique. If you think of politics (social programs, military spending, religion, anything that can be legislated) as a game- at least in terms of games in terms of game theory- I try to tell people that just because we both have the same idea of what 'winning' the game is we may have different strategies for how to get there... for instance, even although politically I'm probably closest to a Democratic Socialist I understand that in a first past the post election system that voting for a Democratic Socialist candidate in a close race, unless they are also backed by the Democrats, is not good strategic voting- vote hard left in the Democratic primary, but vote for whoever wins the primary as long as they are farther left than who the Republicans run... I had a friend who voted for Nader. I liked Nader. In ranked choice I might have even picked him over Gore (although I did have some questions about his ability to lead). Nader was a spoiler in first passed the post. I said that before Florida. So I vote Democratic but also push for ranked choice. When I argue with someone from the Right I try to figure out if they just have a different understanding of economics than I do or if they are just racist. If they are racist,... well, I haven't found a good set of arguments for that yet, but I've got a pretty good set of conversation points for economics, and I'm willing to be convinced on different points of view (A Krugman article changed my perspective on debt).

There are some videos that I would love to share with theist individuals I am having conversations with, but the individuals, while being scientifically well thought out, are so abrasive that the average theist listening automatically feels defensive, puts up their guard, and shuts down leading to an essential end to the conversation. 2:13 Street Epistemology is where you ask questions to help your conversation partner reveal the reasons and methods that they use to arrive at their own conclusion. Holding back on your view unless they ask for it. "walk me through this" "help me understand this". 3:20 Having a calm, informed consenting conversation partner is very important to SE. 5:09 Don't ask leading questions. Ask open-ended questions. 5:48 If ever approached to do an interview in public make sure to record it or ask a friend to record it so you have the entire interaction in case it is misrepresented online. 6:15 Watch for drawing conclusions from answers. Someone could give an answer then I use that to message which isn't part of SE. 6:30 When asking about evolution or Intelligent Design some people might not care or have much opinion on that so move on and don't spend much time on it. Ask simple questions to verify: where are we going? what really important here to you? what's a factor in the confidence this is true? 7:20 Pay attention to where people are, sitting or standing. Both questioner and interlocker should be on same physical height, both standing or both sitting. Subtle body language. Unconscious power dynamics could cause the interlocker to be guarded. Do I see my conversation partner as an equal? 9:20 We want our conversation partner to be engaged and asking questions too. See them as a human and partner. 10:25 If recording make entire video available if you edit so that it is an honest discussion and it doesn't seem misrepresented. Use video and conversation as opportunity to teach, not message through editing. 11:36 Avoid messaging. Ask a few questions to bring someone to a point to transmit a message. Avoid things like: "by the way, here's the truth..." or "let me correct you..." Be genuinely interested in how someone arrived at their conclusion, because it might be a conclusion that I want to adopt. 12:20 Watch for presumptions we have not agreed upon such as "how can something make itself out of nothing..." This "nothing" is often used by theists to strawman abiogenesis and the program didn't make itself. Spot these false assumptions and challenge them instead of feeling like you need to answer the question. 12:45 Some people give a reason initially for their belief but after exploring it with them it's often another reason or multiple reasons. 13:07 "We ask questions" -- my conversation partner is discovering their reasons along side of me. Discover discrepancy in standards. I.E. Why is evolution too much of a jump but ID is not? 13:52 Goal is to understand NOT win! 14:20 Most important goal is clarity, how can I truly understand what this person thinks is true and main justifications that they conclude that. Repeat it back to them and ask for them to confirm you understand what they just said. 15:05 At the end of the conversation is there progress? Did the interlocker understand better about their position? Did the questioner understand better about their position? Did either change their confidence level or belief? Did one or the other come away with more questions or wanting to research the topic further? 15:30 ethics of SE: Think by myself what the ethical considerations alone. What do I want to achieve, what is a success, what is a failure. What would I want to understand and consent to if it was me on the other end of this conversation? Informed consent, they know exactly what they are getting in to and move at the pace they are comfortable with. 16:30 Sometimes people can be alarmed by what you can reveal of their own thinking. Explain to them exactly what you are doing and why. We'd rather them leave at that point then further into the conversation without that consent. 17:00 Potential downside to SE is that you or your conversation partner may discover that a belief we hold is not true. This could affect what tribes we participate in that require that belief. This could change our life. 18:00 We want to slow down and take time to understand your belief tower. How did you build it? What are the reasons that are propping it up? If you are messaging to correct someone then you aren't helping them understand how they themselves formed their views. That's the most important thing since they are the ones with the views. 18:45 Try to take yourself out of the conversation as much as possible and try to make it about them. They are the ones with the view with the reasons that needs to be understood by them and us.
