When I first started sparring I was flinching every time someone throws a punch but I figured out if I stay relaxed it was so much easier to spar

I put a medicine ball on the floor. I get into a Pushup position above it with my stomach over the ball. I drop from this position and exhale. This helps me to simulate getting hit. It does not take long to learn to exhale.

This has solved a big mystery for me. My sparring fitness seems to not reflect my overall fitness at all. I get ridiculously out of breath after 1 or 2 rounds. So glad I watched this vid.

Breathing is the most fundamental of ALL fundamentals and yet it gets so easily overlooked! I absolutely LOVE the way you demonstrated breathing on defense leading to easier offensive transitions. I'm definitely guilty of holding my breath while defending and that quick inhale can gas me even with good cardio. I wouldn't have even known how simple of a fix it is without this video!

I've been kick boxing for 2 years now. I can run forever. Do intervals. But never realized why I gassed so quickly when sparring. Now that I've watched this video, I realize when ever I spar, and people close distance and start unloading shots, I do freeze up and hold my breath. This video was an eye opener and I really appreciate it. With regards to your gloves, I like the idea. I use a pair of 12oz title glove. I like how fluidly I can throw punches but hate how sore my knuckles get (especially on my right hand. The middle knuckle is usually swollen and in agony after bag work). Would be nice to have a lightweight glove with very good padding for the knuckles. I feel like i have more than enough wrist support with my handwraps.

I asked my parents to get me a heavy bag and stand for Christmas. I've been wanting one for a while, but have been putting it off due to other things. I figured I'd ask for it for Christmas that way I don't have to spend my money on it. It's coming in Wednesday. I'm excited, I've always loved the idea of boxing. I've done a lot of shadowboxing, as well as kickboxing in my home. It's helps a lot with stress. Not only that, but it is a wonderful workout. I really need to get back into shape. I haven't been eating that well, and I haven't been exercising as good as I used to. I feel like it's catching up to me.

Elbows down! Holding my elbows up was one of my biggest mistakes - along with holding my breath. The breathing on defense is fantastic advice. I like a bag glove with good padding on the knuckles, is a little heavy (16 or 20 oz, isn't bulky (a glove that heavy usually is) and dries fast. I don't like when my hands are pruney after bag.

I would say that it also reduces the amount of pain that you are feeling, so it doesn't only help you with absorbing strikes by tightening your muscles through exhaling, but breathing is also done in different forms of meditation to reduce pain and stuff, by my opinion focusing on your brain takes your focus off the pain so you are actually better off, super important advice, your knowledge and enthusiasm about giving information about boxing is beyond everything I've ever seen, thanks from Czech Republic buddy

It would be nice to see another audiotape of yours in which you shout numbers and the listener is responding with defensive movements, or you could make a video in which you use the tapes that you already made, but instead of hitting when numbers are shouted, the listener responds to those combinaitions with defensive movements that you would explain. I'm an MMA beginner, no boxing background, but working on it in parallel, gonna need some sparring and defense training, this likely goes hand in hand with the fear of getting hit, if I learn to defend and relax while doing it the fear of getting hit will likely reduce to a more manageable level. I'll also need to practice keeping breathing during grappling, it's especially bad if you've got somebody kneeling on your diaphragm, I tend to tense up like you stated and gasp for air to the point of being tapped out just from having someone squeeze me a bit because I'm already too winded. Thank you for this video, this has given some great inspirations on trying to breathe consciously until I've got enough practice to have it happen on autopilot. A lot of the stuff you're teaching applies to MMA too, even to the grappling parts, and it's really good to get a bit of help on the way.

To answer your question: gloves that have the protective feel of the everlast protex2 while still retaining the ability to hit the bag flush; gloves that have a flat top, none of those rounded gloves like adidas have; gloves that have a proper hook and loop fastening without any useless extra padding on the wrist are; gloves that have a soft cuff that isn't too long; and of course gloves that look cool, but aren't neon colored, gold, camouflage textured etc. I think two coloured gloves look cool, especially those in which the thumb is different color than the rest of the glove. Leather gloves are also nice, but for me the protection is more important than the materials.

For a better glove, I would like to have one that dries quickly. Most gloves need to be hung to dry or some type of thing put in to dry their inner most layers. I find that in addition to the pounding that gloves take that dampness can prematurely harm gloves. Also, for sanitary reasons, shared gloves can breed germs due to dark, damp recesses in gloves.
@alantaylor66917 жыл бұрын
Cool. Do folks wash their gloves, like chuck them in the washing machine? Or is that a no no with boxing gloves, as in what sweat and germs are created in it stay in it?
@marklaska83587 жыл бұрын
Jim Thompson We usually dry them out. Also, using a spray disinfectant bought at Target is good to use too.

As a 240 pound person who incorporates heavy bag and punch mitt work into my strength and conditioning work I prefer the thickly padded 16 oz. ''Fighting Sports'' Gel glove. They are priced at about $120.00 but well worth it! Also the cuff is a thick Velcro strap so you can get into and out of them sans a partner unlike laced gloves.

Great tutorials! Great technical insight, but also inspirational! I'm glad I discovered this sport and your channel. As for the feedback you asked for (more than one year ago...), I'm just a beginner, but I can say that, you're right, punching the bag does hurt the knuckles (so, special gloves for that it's a good idea) and the price range you're thinking about, it's in the market. All the best!
