Predator 22 vs Vanguard 23 vs Kohler 26

UPDATE: After using a couple more Predators we've found they'll outperform the Vanguard but ONLY after tuning the carb. They're tuned poorly out of the box.
Side by side comparison of the Harbor Freight Predator 22 hp, Briggs Vanguard 23 hp, and Kohler Command Pro 26.5 hp EFI. I discuss a few differences in the engines, considerations for installing on mini airboats, jon boats, and hovercraft, and give engine weights.

That's not the same engine. Not by a long shot. I have Kohler's stacked around my shop like firewood that have been made in the past 10 years. These are not people who don't service their equipment either. Some service issues are to blame , but Kohler has dropped the ball. Possibly this EFI 27 HP is a tank but the lower HP is garbage. The engine you're talking about was built to last and be past on to your grandchildren as well as the mower it was on. Now everything disposable.

Thomas - Kohler WAS the best! Back then they made the engines of cast iron, now they are made of aluminum alloy.

The old ones were cast-iron blocks. Heavy and low(er) horsepower. They were also made to last, and not pass emissions standards. Now they are made as cheap as possible, lots of plastic bits, spacers, washers, etc. And also tuned lean for emissions/economy.

I had mixed results with Kohler. Never had issues with single cylinders. My latest is a 22hp vanguard, I had a pushrod bend on one cylinder head about years ago. knock on wood, I hope that's the worst thing to go wrong...

I've had a couple personal Kohlers one an 18 and one a 22 and no complaints. I work at a golf course and we have 4 mowers with the 18 Vanguards on them. They easily run 5000+ hours as long as you keep oil in them. :) We have lost a couple due to the oil filter getting punctured.

I have used all three. My favorite is the Vanguard. Haven’t really had any problems with the Vanguard engines. They’ve made them for a long time but some of the engines are harder to get parts for particularly the older engines where they changed to a newer style piston and flywheel assembly that requires buying expensive conversion kits. I’ve had Kohler engines that have ran good and other that are always having problems. There have been many variations of the engine that have come out over the years and some were problematic with had gasket problems and ignition systems. They also had problems with the magnets on the flywheel coming off and destroying the alternator. But overall they are strongly built engines. The predators are a mixed bag of quality but overall they are decent enough. They have terrible fuel pumps and we’ve had a few engines fail prematurely. I generally steer away from them since they are a roll of the dice of how long the engines will really last. I’ve a brand new Predator apart and found metal shavings in the crankcase and some of the bolts were not torqued correctly.

Used the 16Hp Vanguard vertical shaft version and 26Hp Kohler on my Sevtec Hovercraft program for some 30 years until I wore out. Things went very well except for excessive vibration due to light flywheel.

@@JF32304 Glad you are able to speak for everyone's application. Fuel economy is probably less important here than it is in a car but, some V twins can be found on large generators. I would like my generator to run longer, with less fuel. These can also be found on riding mowers. I would bet that a landscaping business spends a lot of money on fuel. When somebody asks a question, a rude response like "nobody cares" helps no one.

Thanks for the video. I'm 70 and have worked on small engines all my life. The predator is a Honda clone. Don't care much for the Krocker, or the Briggs an Scrapthem. It' hard to beat a real Honda. But then again they can all be good engines, it all depends on proper maintenance. Thanks again for a great video.

It's a shame about Briggs. They used to make a good engine. I have two old Sears Suburbans with Briggs on them since back in the 70's. One a 12 and the other a 15hp, both single cylinder. I used them as mowers, mini bush hogs and scraping the driveway. They both held up beautifully and still run fine. But, they were built years ago.

There's nothing wrong with the vanguard engine. Easily comparable to Honda. Very solid power plant. The Kohler on the other hand are plagued with head gasket issues.

i designed an augmented split big surfboard catamaran air-boat. the flotation augmentation, to the two half surf boards, was not much; so i went with a Valach Motors VM 210, which is extremely light for a 16 HP motor. i would think any of those large model airplane engines would be at least worth considering for light air boats.

It can, although it sounds like you might have a different problem like something with the carb tuning. The exception is if your engine is more than a foot or so above the gas tank, then the stock fuel pump is too weak to pump the gas up to the engine

You can use an electric fuel pump but keep in mind you will need to run a return line to the tank. These carburetors are can’t handle a lot of fuel pressure so a return line is required.

That reminded me when a friend and I modified an old venturi shrouded fan to use with a horizontal shaft mower engine. It worked, but not impressive. It served best as a weekend project to get out on the water. Inches of water though. Might have been faster if I put a skirt and a diverter on the fan... :-)

I honestly can say its a good motor for a budget swap...only thing i did different was switch over to an electrical fuel pump due to that motor loves gas and the mechanical pump that was on the motor wasnt pumping enough fuel....other than that its really stout

@Daniel 045 It is for me. I run 15 /40 Delo diesel formula oil and would NEVER pay for a Kohler UNLESS I could find a cast iron 301. Would most likely go with an 'L' head Briggs like the opposed twin Vanguard or an I/C. And I don't run mine hammered either and keep clean oil and no alcohol gas in them. And two are 85 models. And the Preditor starts on the 2nd pull every time. But the Briggs and 301 does too. Oh well. It's just me though.

Just an FYI, the 725cc Kohler engines can actually make at least 25 HP if you swap out the carburetor for a carburetor from a 25 HP engine. The difference in the carburetors is either the size of the intake orifice, the throttle butterfly valve has a limited range like what Kawasaki does with their engines, or the jet sizes are different. It could also be a combination of things.

If it’s for bowfishing, any of these engine would work great, especially paired with a belt reduction drive and 54” propeller. If you’re looking more for airboat performance (planing out a lot of weight), you’d need something much bigger. like a small car engine.

Make your own dyno by making a run stand that can rotate on the center of the crank then use an arm and scale to measure torque. See flycorvair for a great example.

Yes the Kohler engines have been developing overheating issues due to poor carburetor designs making them run too lean and the plastic intake manifolds with the dinky o-ring gaskets tend to cause a bad vacuum leak and make it run lean or surge. The Vanguards don’t seem to have as bad of an issue. They haven’t changed the base engine design all that much since they were made over 30 years ago. However the newest vanguards also have some carburetor problems but that’s usually due to letting them sit with bad gas in them. The Nikki carburetors that both Briggs and Kohler put on their engines are kinda terrible but less so on the Briggs vanguards.

briggs has never used plastic flywheels, they use plastic flywheel fans which is fine but never plastic flywheels, the flywheel has to be metal for the engine to spark

@@ayp1938 Well the the black metal on the 22hp. Poulan Pro I replaced must of been really soft metal. It melted the teeth the where the starter turned the ALL BLACK fiberboard looking flywheel with a very thin metal disk attached to the underside of it. The replacement was all metal and heavy compared to very light one I took off.

We used to make these for the Predator. Yes, they’re just the old pancake style screw on mufflers you can get for lawnmower engines. We drilled out the threads and welded exhaust tubing to them.

Kohler engines were built to fit John deer and wheel horse but you can make them fit in some pretty tight places

A lot of engine conversion kits for John Deere’s are for Vanguard engines. I’ve done countless conversions for 316 and 318 tractors for customers where the Onan engines were either worn out or blown up but the tractor was still in good shape. Everyone who I did the Vanguard conversion has been very pleased. I have swapped on a Kohler engine once and they are noticeably bulkier than the Briggs. They are both good engines but depending on the tractor, the vanguard is easier as a universal engine swap option because it is so compact.

Chose the Briggs for my Ultralight project, tuned it using high lift cam combined with higher lift roller rockers and 4mm packers under the valve springs. To raise compression added shallower dished pistons, billet rods and thin head gaskets. All worked well for 120 hours until the 280 degree camshaft broke, so anyone going this route make sure you add either a billet cam or steel reinforce the middle with 11mm drill rod.

We haven’t had oil leak from the engine cover gaskets on either type of engine before, but we’ve only run them stock without any modified internals, so it could be with stock horsepower, the redrive doesn’t put enough stress on the engine cover to cause a leak

I’d go with the Kohler. The predators are good but but like he said, the fuel pumps are trash and I’ve also found that the predator stock carb does not hold a tune very well. I don’t have experience with the larger Briggs and Stratton engine but all the small ones used on the generators that I have seen use a little oil and if you don’t watch it will throw a rod.

The smaller vanguard engines should use much oil at all. The larger vanguard do use a little more oil but not enough where you have to top it off every time you use it. As long as you stay on top of it, it’s fine. It’s normal air cooled engines consume a tiny bit of oil especially as they age but some do consume more than others. The big block Kawasaki engines are notorious for high oil consumption. Haven’t seen too much oil consumption from the vanguards unless they were not very well maintained or have high hours. Kohler is a mixed bag with oil consumption. It usually has to do with blown or leaky head gaskets. Newer engines that run lean from the factor to combat emissions eventually have high oil consumption as a result.

The stock predator carburetors are ok but are really only meant for wide open throttle and that’s it. They have flat spots in the part throttle range where it falls on its face. The fuel pumps that come with them are weak and trashy. You can get replacements online for cheap and they usually last longer too. Remember that quality control with predator engines is a hit or miss. You could get a good running engine or get one that lasts a few months before it conks out. I speak from experience as a small engine mechanic.

I had a Kohler Courage that didnt give me any troubles for 14 years even though it is considered the worst Kohler ever. Bath tub design is cool as long as the case bolts dont back out and mesh with the flywheel cracking the block. Also the plastic cam gears.

I have yet to get more than 500hrs, out of the newer Briggs engines without major damage/ issues of some sort , I have numerous kohlers with 750+ hrs to over 1000 hours with no issues . I have not used any of the predator engines .

Pound for pound the 23 Vanguard is hard to beat. Belt reduced w/ 68" 3 blade prop will produce in +-160lb static thrust. The Predator will push as hard as the Vanguard 23 but it weighs more, and for what it's worth there's the made in China factor. Both of these engines can benefit from a carb change and exhaust mod. Pull starter on the Vanguard is a novelty option for this engine class, and it's truly 'man's work' to crank over. If someone is desperate to save 10lbs+-, it's possible to keep the pull start and remove the 12v starter and associated battery (maybe even the e-start ring gear & battery charge system)

About a dozen years ago I built equipment around vanguard and Honda engines. I used different engines because they were for different companies. I didn't want either to say I stole the design for their equipment so all the parts I didn't make were from different manufacturers. I really couldn't see any important differences and all the equipment lasted for years of hard use. I really thought that the vanguard was a slightly better value. The people using the Honda thought it was a better brand. I thought both were great and would use either if I was making something for myself. I think if I was building something for myself I would look for something with a carburetor. Fuel injection seems unnecessary. A carburetor is simpler and on such a small engine more logical regarding repair.
