Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator in their "man to man" fight because that's what everybody expects from Arnie, but it was Arnie himself who said "I can't beat him. He's a monster. I'm just a man," so it was rewritten with Dutch losing the fight and having to use his wits to prevail. When I read that, I couldn't help thinking of how certain contemporary action stars' egos could never bear being shown getting their asses kicked on screen.

My brother worked on The Player, a TV action show starring Wesley Snipes. He said that Snipes' ego wouldn't allow his character to lose a fight. The helicopter scene at the beginning…like you said, it isn’t quite stealth, but it’s as close as you can get. My father was in Vietnam and they’d do night insertions into the jungle. The helicopters would fly in formation with one trailing without its beacon lights activated. They would fly around the area while the one running dark would come in and drop off the men, then all fly away. Unless you where right there under them it just looks like some helicopters were flying around the area. You can’t tell that one dropped off some men. The scene in the movie isn’t very dark, but if it was it wouldn’t work very well on camera.

This movie is a staple in sci-fi cinema despite mixed reviews upon release. The practical effects are masterful and the directing style by McTeirnan is very particular to his keen sense of awareness. All the tension and suspense are this directors' trademarks and the reveals are perfectly timed. The action is intense and the characters are all likeable in their own way even with limited screen time. The creature itself is celebrated among all movie lovers and noted as one of cinemas greatest antagonists. Film Note: Van Damme was the original Predator in a different costume but it looked awful and, depending on what you believe, he was fired from the movie for various unconfirmed reasons. Also, the sounds the predator makes are done by the guy who does Optimus Prime.

As a kids in Denmark we played Predator in school. It was a weird mix of tag, flag football and dodgeball. The girls were predators and the boys were soldiers. Only the predators could use the dodgeball balls to "kill", or by pushing a soldier to the ground. The soldiers could "kill" a predator by taking its' flags. I still remember being shoved down by the savage and chubby girl from Greenland. This game was invented after we watched Predator at a VHS movie marathon. Just a bit of FYI trivia: There's a comic book called "Billy's Last Stand" that depicts fight on the log bridge against the Predator. Short story even shorter, it shows Billy doing surprisingly well fighting blade vs. blade and the Predator resorting to using its invisibility to get behind him and stab him in the back. There was a Predator 2 sequel two issue comic published by Dark Horse Comics which, like the movie showed another Predator hunting in a violent crime ridden urban environment, but the comic was set in New York instead of Los Angeles, and the protagonist was Dutch's older brother Mike instead of Danny Glover. Mike had a great cynical catchphrase whenever somebody expressed alarm. My favorite example it was when someone was afraid of what the Predator species could do if humans tried to forbid them from hunting. The other character said "New York could be destroyed!" and Mike replied "You say that as if it were a bad thing."

That's super interesting. I'll have to check that out. I must say that's the one thing I really didn't like about this movie. Billy going out the way he did just didn't make any sense to me at all. I'm definitely curious of an extended take on that. 👍👍

@@cbretschneider Billy's fight with the Predator could also be one of those things that they actually filmed, but cut out because it spoiled the suspense or whatever. There’s something so inherently bad ass about Billy taking off all his shit and grabbing his knife… Always loved that moment..

Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers Franchise also did The Predator vocalizations in the movie. He did the growls and snarls, and when his mask is off, they used the sound of a bear, pig and crocodile to make him roar.

"That gun is bananas." Wonderful. I couldn't have put it better myself.

The Predator's laugh at the end was Billy's from the, uhh, "echo joke" that he was trying to copy. Also, I always seem to forget how extra hard that R rating is for gore.

HEY Jen. Fun fact: Arnold went on to be a successful politician as the governor of California. Your buddy with the minigun who, "Didn't have time to bleed". His name is Jessie Ventura, former pro wrestler, actor, and governor of the U.S. state of Minnesota. The predator confrontation set them up for their successful political endeavors. HA.

I believe Ventura is also a former Green Beret.

You might as well see Predator 2. You'll get to see a hint of who else the Predator has hunted.

This movie along with Alien, set the stage for all Sci Fi/Action movies that followed it and they set the bar really high up, to the point that they and the storylines have never actually been bettered; you really need to review John Carpenters - The Thing with Kurt Russell, another classic with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at.

Twentieth Century Fox! That means Disney now owns the Predator AND Aliens! Can’t wait for AvPvM . . . (Alien vs. Predator vs. Mickey)

Great reaction to the movie, there is a new predator movie coming to Hulu in August, it's called 'Prey'

Now you need to do other Arnold classics like “Total Recall”, “The Running Man” and “Kindergarten Cop”. You’ll not regret it.

the Yautja (name of the predator species) is a fairly seasoned hunter, but there's a code of conduct when it comes to finding a worthy adversary. if they find a peer on the field, they can accept a duel from them. they are ferocious, but they have honor. unsurprisingly, this is just the introduction to that sort of ruleset.

I saw this opening weekend , there was no other movie that could compare, you felt like you were in the jungle with them.... when Arnie was running before the waterfall plunge, we were like... Dammm Arnie Runs news @11pm... it made the Predator that much more frightening...how the counterbalance of the trap just about killed it, instead of the trap itself...all those things in the finale, were awesome, it using their speech to taunt and mimic them...the move stands the test of time like no other.
