Prey also was really good with how our lead didn't try to take on the preadator by herself, which really help show just how much of a threat the predator was.

Though the entire tribe was pretty skinny in stature so they have to rely on teamwork and smarts to take down a tiger or bear let alone a predator

Agreed man. Was like Lethal Weapon vs Predator without the title but actually done right. The facial puppeteering of Predator was definitely goofy but I could get past it. I think people were just soured when it released because it didn't have Arnold or any muscle bound action hero that was extremely popular in the 80s.

Personally I love Predator 2 and I don't think Sean's argument that it doesn't hold because we know its a Predator so the investigation is luke warm for the audience makes sense. My opinion: The biggest thing that gets overlooked with the Predator, is that it's not a classic despite its troubled shoot, it's a classic because of its production issues. For instance, they couldn't agree on a design and Van Damme left the project, so they just made the creature invisible for the first half or so. But even more importantly, the director was unavailable to shoot most of the first act of the movie. So it was shot by the second director, and its freaking terrible. Basically, so cliche and over the top, its self-parody. Its so bad, they wanted to reshoot all those scenes, but didn't have the budget... And that's what makes this movie so freaking amazing. The first part is this goofy almost self-parody of 80s action, and then all of a sudden the predator just shows up and starts killing all these over the top, macho action cliches. Its just great, and I don't think there will ever be another movie like it. But if I were to make a Predator sequel, that would be my formula: Goofy-Cliched generic genre flick, where mid-way through, the predator shows up and starts killing people. Complete genre and tone change. Like instead of the Predator 2, give me Bad Boys 2, and then the predator shows up. Instead of AVP, give me Prometheus. Dial up the stupidity of the scientists to 11, make the deaths even goofier. Then all of a sudden, the predator shows up. First part- soft, over the top semi- parody of genre cliches. Then the predator shows up. That's the formula.

It was clearly meant to be serious but the stand in director just wasn’t great, and so it became really goofy… It’s really hard to recapture that perfect balance on purpose.

Nah some of that's not true, predator was always going to have the cloak. Van Damme got fired after they redesigned the suit because John Mctiernan didnt like what they were using at all, and because van damme kept bitching about the heat in the suit. He didn't quit. Thank God he did because the movie wouldn't have been the same.

Imo movie sequels shouldn't copy the exact formula of the first movie or you'll just have a cash grab. The fact that Predator was directed by two guys with different visions on a limited budget is what makes it special. Like the first Terminator, an amazing action horror that somehow worked with its small budget and unique vision, and Terminator 2, an amazing action movie that has a lot of heart and some of the best action that paved the way for blockbusters today. Both kept the idea of the impending nuclear war against the machines, but T2 changed it up and set it apart from the first one by its change in characters and story. Or Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Both really good in their own right (imo) but they're set apart from each other by tone and story, yet they don't feel disconnected. Sequels can work, but only if the story and work on the film is treated with the same (if not, more) determination and passion put into the first movie, without rehashing something we've seen before and coming up with something new and exciting.

I havent seen the new one yet, but I can rank the rest: 6. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem: Dumb, kind of trashy "battle" between the greatest creatures in movie. 5. The Predator: Slightly disappointing, but also a little bit entertaining, because it has new ideas to add to the franchise. 4. Predator 2: The mash-up between city-cop-film with a creature-horror-sci-fi-film works less than you might think. 3. Aliens vs. Predator: Great build-up and really nice plot for a more trashy movie. 2. Predator: Hot take, but I found the story a bit lackluster and wasnt that overwhelmed by Arnie etc. 1. Predators: For me, by far the best Predator movie, because of a completely different plot, great actors and a perfect pace with a really good suspense-element.

Prey shocked me on the level that Doctor Sleep shocked me for how much I loved it..top of my list til I rewatch all of them in order 1. Predator ( what else needs to be said that hasn’t been said the last 35 years) 2. Prey ( All it took was a back to basics to get the predator movie we have wanted for years) 3. Predator 2 ( honestly this and predators flip flop…the hate this movie gets baffles me, has always baffled me since 1990, nostalgia puts this at 3 ) 4. Predators ( was very lukewarm 12 years ago when I saw this…time has been really good to it..solid enjoyable film that could move up when I rewatch them all 5. Alien vs Predator ( enjoyable movie with aliens and predators…the one nitpick and negative I have …no it isn’t the PG13 rating …it’s the look and sound of the predators thermal vision.. a lot of the sequels get it horribly wrong..only AVPR and Prey got it right..this one did it the worst and that’s what brings the movie down for me 6. Alien Vs Predator Requiem ( wouldn’t it be something if this movie had more than 2 lights that under that darkness was a masterpiece of an alien and predator movie that none of us saw because it’s impossible to know what is happening) 7. The Predator ( yuck…when Shane Black was announced..exciting times..who better to steer the ship than the predators first on screen victim…then the trailers dropped..had a bad bad feeling that all came to fruition…I hate rewatching these movies and knowing that when the credits roll on Predators that I have to put this on next..tried the last 4 years to find ..anything that I like. I believe staunchly on the 2nd or 3rd viewing …4 or 5 for this make me hate it badly

For me it’s: 7. The Predator. Terrible, terrible movie 6. AVP Requiem. Nihilistic, disgusting and fairly unwatchable, but simply not as much of a blatant mess as The Predator 5. Predator 2. Just a less good version of the original movie. Not bad but not very good. 4. AVP. I’ve always really enjoyed this. It respects both franchises, delivers on the title fight and had some really interesting concepts. The last shot with the Predalien chestburster was the most hype thing I remember seeing as a kid. It also amazes me that this movie feels less offensive to the Alien lore than Prometheus and Covenant. 3. Prey. Great return to form for the franchise. Simple and effective 2. Predators. I love this movie. I went to see it at a really low point in my life and this movie gave me everything I had wanted from a Predator movie. 1. Predator. One of the best sci fi movies ever. One of the best action movies ever. One of the best horror movies ever

I absolutely agree with the ranking! I recall really enjoying Predators in the theater, but the online community trashed it, so I'm glad to see it get some credit. The Predator did have some interesting ideas with the protagonists, though they felt creatively rushed and very unpolished, but I absolutely despise the idea of trying to up-the-ante by introducing a giant version of the established monster.

Here's my take: Bad movies: 7: The Predator - Full of plot holes and unlikeable and uninteresting characters - 3/10 6: AvP: Requiem - Somewhat fun, but pretty distasteful and full of uninteresting and unlikeable characters (Wolf and the Predalien were cool though) - 3.7/10 Good movies 5: AvP - A fun fan film with characters that aren't given a lot of depth, but are likable, and great action and horror scenes - 6.9/10 4: Predators - A good and enjoyable film that expands on the lore, but it retreads the original film too often - 7.5/10 3: Predator 2 - A solid entry with a few flaws - 8/10 Exceptional movies 2: Prey - This film stands toe-to-toe with the original, with lots of gore, a great time period, a good plot and a really cool Predator - 9.5/10 1: Predator - Iconic, rewatchable, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, nuff said. - 10/10

Ok, so this is my list but I can't list The Predator as I never saw it at the theatres and its not available on D+ in the UK. So that all said: 1: Predator - Lightening in a bottle, just a perfect movie. 2: Predator 2 - I love the idea of the Predator coming to a major city and hunting humans, add the government hunting it to get its tech on top of that and its a great mix. 3: Prey - Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Act one is a little slow going and boring but by the time the Predator is making its moves on the tribe and the Frenchman it gets great. I didn't buy the ending though, the way she finished it off, I don't think the Predator would have fallen for that. 4: AVP - This was a close call for 3rd place. I LOVE this movie and I know that puts me in the minority. I cared for the characters, I loved how they expanded the mythology in a logical way that made sense to me and the action, the punch up between our main Predator and an alien was glorious. 5: Predators - For me, despite some great actors involved, I just couldn't get past it being a retread of the first Predator movie. 6: AVP 2 - Everything Sean said, it was just terrible. And yeah, seeing a chestburster come out of a kid ... no, no way was that needed.

The Predator made one of the biggest mistakes in the franchise - trying to make the Predator comedic. The moment it ripped off the dude's arm and gave the driver a thumbs up with the severed arm, I knew I was in for something nowhere near as good as the previous films

Yep. I agree with what you said about the very first Predator. Whenever I think of that film, I always envision the Predator not Arnold. It's first and foremost a predator film.
