In Gabon, it’s the dream of most young footballers to play internationally. But in 2022, a long serving coach for youth national teams admitted to charges of raping, grooming, and exploiting young players. He faces up to 30 years in prison.
Africa Eye’s Khadidiatou Cissé travels to Gabon to investigate one of the biggest sexual abuse scandals in the history of football.
She speaks with victims and eyewitnesses who reveal a shocking culture of sexual abuse that has plagued all levels of Gabonese football for three decades - with claims that many people knew, and many stayed silent.
We follow a coach who, at personal risk, is determined to bring about change.
FIFA are facing accusations of failing to take effective action over the sexual abuse scandal.

If that happened to the boys team, what do you think is happening to the girls team?? every person that was informed of the abuse and did not take action need to be charged and held responsible. its utterly disgusting that some people can let abuse ran rampant for 25 years with no action being taken, its absolutely disgusting.

When sell kids the false dream of playing professionally in Europe in exchange for abusing them this happens. Schools should be teaching them they have as much chance of playing professionally as they do of winning the next lottery or becoming the next president. For 99.999 percent they will never play pro no matter what they sacrifice of their body, mind, and soul.

Too much power(centralized) to a single human that's built upon other ppl's consent of that someone owning so much power over otherselves That, made the powered one think/feel(socially accepted) to do whatever they want and by logic, what they want is to solify their power by socially degrading other ,actions such as 'abuse','badmounthig','rape'(one forcefully upon on the other, both on the mind and physically), and that way is often used on kids(children)(and women if they are weak too), as the kids will grow up to be adults who will be shaped by their childhood experience(see brain wiring, conditional reflection), which makes the kids(now adults) feel powerless. Thus , the powered, achieve their goal(purpose/gets what they want, and continue to get what they want), as they find a way(this way--abuse/rape) to solify their power to make themselves stay in power, which is to supress others ,from childhood Whoever feels like God, will reveal its true self before GOD GOD exists to combat evil When evil is gone, GOD will be gone GOD is for anyone to claim, it does not be-long Be GOD

I'm from Gabon, born and raised there. As a kid I would always hear such rumors, that you will have to go through some terrible stuff in order to make it as a pro in football. But since no one had proof of it (except for the victims), people would just joke about it, including the child I was at the time. There's so many talented kids that me and many people knew that had enough talent, but they would all of a sudden stop taking football as seriously, or they would say they refused to do some things that were asked to them, and people would just make fun of them, saying they were just not good enough anyway. So when it all came out a couple of years ago, no one was really surprised in the country. The surprise was more about how long it had been since it started.

Evil, evil bastards. But it reflects wider problems. Children and their families see football as the only means to create a better life. Can you imagine the pressure that the boys were under. Sadly 99.999 percent of them have zero chance of ever playing professionally. The " better life" is an empty promise that these coaches use to get away with their abuse. Perhaps teaching children actual job skills instead of how to kick a ball would be better in the long run.

As a Ugandan that grew up obsessed with football, and went to school with a lot of youth national youth protests, we had our own scandal in the early 2010’s and unfortunately despite some of them being sentenced. With money and external( foreign influence), it was later swept under the rug. A shame because I personally knew some of the young ballers that fell victim to this. A lot of them were eventually ostracized, and many fled due to the shame

I am so horrified by this. Our children. They prey on those that are easy to get. I am sure they try all youth, but they know they have an open door to those youth who are just doing their thing thinking they can mentor them because of something missing in the home or their life. For example, I have a child into sports and I make time to be at every event, every practice. I am constantly checking in. Not to say that this is 100 proof, but it should and will intimidate and deter someone. They would see it's harder to get at her because I or a family member is in the way and always in their face smiling, volunteering, and so on. I also need to get my daughter self-defense classes as well. I know for a fact she will join the wrestling team at school as part of her conditioning for athletes

These stories tend to have the same overlap. It's the people in position of trust who are able to commit crimes for years. We've seen this with priests around the world. This is a second more grim protection all of us provide to predators, the media's complicity. Celebrities are so important to media that they are more concerned with keeping monsters content than going after those in authority. The UK had Savile, happen had Johnny. In both cases people knew but no one wanted to investigate or upset the status quo. This is the same story that we've heard before and that we will hear again. It's on all of us to remember monsters don't look like monsters. They are our friends and family and respected members of our communities. It's why they get away with crimes for so long, we want to trust them and no one wants to investigate further.

This made me think, maybe, just maybe, some of our boys and men end up being gay 'forcefully' or through initiation, without them understanding the predicament they may be/ are in. I hope we create safe spaces and environments for everyone to be able to talk about anything and everything.

Etc etc horrible

What these coaches have done to kids is absolutely despicable and punishment should be hard. People like these have no place in society. That being said and in case of the President, we should never judge as guilty someone that is still under investigation and with no formal conviction. He should resign but he is not formally convicted... yet

Africa needs to update policies and scrutinize positions more often. We need officers that investigate organizations and directors. People with authority feel powerful enough to forget the aim is to build the nation's future. The future for the African child is tough but bright. These brutal conversations will separate the evil from good. All I can say at this stage of unethical behaviours, KARMA IS A BITCH. May the universe serve justice to these vampires. (Football unites the world) i've grown up loving soccer and this story hurts to hear how talents have been demeaned. Thank God for media. Free speech will revolution the African child
