I really consider Romantasy more a subgenre of romance than of fantasy. It uses romance tropes and meets the expectations of romance or contemporary readers--but generally disappoints people who are primarily fantasy readers. It should be its own category, but short of that, should be grouped with romance.

They need to split thrillers from mystery too. These really are two entirely different genres and thrillers have been choking the life out of the mysteries for years now.

Weyward was a BOTM selection, which definitely helped widen its audience. It was pretty good. I wish Goodreads would take your suggestion and create a romantasy category. It would be better for everyone.

🧚🧚🧚I am not sure if it gained enough traction yet, but I think Starling House by Alix E. Harrow could be nominated. It was chosen for Book of the Month and it is on a lot of people's October TBRs since it is another gothic story with fantasy elements.

Oh God I read a total of zero of these books. Not a huge surprise, as I haven't been reading a lot of fantasy, but I sincerely hadn't even heard of most of them. Loved the video!!

The Book that Wouldn't Burn was very good. I didn't hate, but also didn't love his Book of the Ancestor series and I found this much more enjoyable. It could be read as a standalone just fine, but it's part of a trilogy.

I read Weyward and thought it was pretty good but it's been just over a month and I couldn't tell you anything about it other than 3 POVs over 3 timelines with nature magic.

I thought I’d done pretty well this year with popular new fantasy books but I’ve only read half of these, I’m hoping Dark Water Daughter or the Will of the Many will make it as they are my faves of the year and I know the Will of the Many has a really high rating but straight fantasy is never going to hold up against fantasy romance

I haven't read Atalanta yet, but i looooooooooooove the mythological character Atalante. She's so underrated! She might be my favorite character in all of Greek mythology and i'm glad she's getting some more "mainstream" recognition

I always love seeing the Goodreads nominees even though my favorite books never make it/win. Some that you didn’t mention that I think we might see: Stone Blind and Clytemnestra were both pretty popular mythology retellings that have been shelved more than Atalanta. Immortal Longings, Ink Blood Sister Scribe, and Starling House were all BOTM selections that have been shelved quite a lot. I feel like BOTM books always make it. My favorite fantasy of the year, The Will of the Many, probably won’t make it even though it’s been popular with fantasy readers.

Every year when the nominations come out, I try to read as many nominees as I can so I can vote in multiple categories. I don’t believe in voting for a book unless I have read it. I don’t keep up on reading the new releases so it is too many books and not enough time. I get overwhelmed and it starts feeling like an assignment. Every year it puts me in a reading slump, but I continue to do this every year! 😵‍💫

I’ve read all the Crowns of Nyaxia novels. ‘The Serpent and the wings of Night’ and ‘Six scorched Roses’ are both amazing, but ‘The Ashes and the star cursed king’ felt all over the place and like it was trying to do too much.

Id really love a Romantasy category, especially as I'm starting to find books that I like in that genre. However I don't think it'll happen, Ive seen a lot of pushback on twitter and tiktok from writers and readers of romantasy not liking that it will be a separate genre. I've seen some very heated debates the last few days haha. That being said I know it won't win but I really hope Last Tale of The Flower Bride does well, as I feel it needs a little more attention.

I haven’t seen the push back and obviously labels always have pros and cons but the fact that most of these books we could clearly put into romantacy or fantasy with romance does prove that some subdivision could be helpful in getting readers to their next perfect read. Which is the only thing I find genres useful for

Serpent and the Wings of Night is the first book in that Carissa Broadbent series. It is a full length novel. I liked it and gave it 3 stars. But it’s rare that I give fantasy romance books higher than 3 stars.

I have an unread ARC for The Book That Wouldn't Burn and I want to read it but I still keep putting it off lol I haven't read anything by him at all so maybe I will actually get to it. I re-read Darker Shades and then read Fragile Threads and honestly really loved it but I am a Schwab lover in general lol Last Tale of the Flower Bride was a surprise for sure, I really enjoyed it too, and the audiobook was really well done and I think made it a better experience.

Huh. Clearly, my taste does not align with what's popular on Goodreads. Other than Bookshops and Bonedust - which I'm interested in but haven't yet read - and Witch King - which I enjoyed, but wouldn't nominate - none of these are even on my TBR. 🤷🏻‍♀

Weyward is one of my favourite books of the year! It is very light on the fantasy. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up in the historical fiction category because I think they have included some magical realism in thst category in the past!
