"Namah Shivaya" has its origins in the longer vedic, Sanskrit stotram called Rudram and from its first section called Namakam. It is prefixed with "Aum" when considered as a separate short mantra. This is for Shaivites. Vaishnavites prefer simple mantras like "Aum Namo Narayana" or "Hare Rama, Hare Krishna". "Aum shakthi" for Shakthi worshippers & "Haro Hara" for Kartikeya.
