I’m so happy for you Hannah. I’ve had my ileostomy since the age of 18 in 2019. I lost my son at 23 weeks due to my UC. I didn’t have my bag at the time, I actually lost him due to toxic mega colon, after his birth I gained my stoma within two days. It was A LOT to process. I miss him so much, and I’m so upset my disease took him. I wish you the best of luck and I cannot wait til I get my rainbow baby! Having your videos helps me mentally so much. I don’t feel so alone. Thank you. I’ve watched your videos since day one. You have always been by my side. So to know your pregnant gives me so much joy . I can’t wait to become pregnant again, im a little nervous due to my ileostomy.

omg that is a lot to process, I'm so sorry you had to go through that 💛 I wish you all the best for future pregnancies! And whilst as you can see from this video it's been quite frustrating with the stoma, at no point (for me) has having an ileostomy actually impacted the pregnancy/foetus!

As a nurse who looks after patients with stomas all the time (I work with intestinal failure patients) this was such a good video to watch! Ive already shared it with my nursing colleagues so we can recommend it to our patients who are thinking of getting pregnant and worried about this aspect of it. I gotta say, it was really frustrating when I could see you struggling and I was thinking about the different tricks we would try on the ward to help with the peristomal skin being excoriated. I know there's a lot of anxiety around changing the kind of bag you have/how big you cut it as it's scary to change things which have worked for so long. The fold-up bags are a pain to empty, I agree. Like someone else mentioned, it helps to use a tissue to wipe inside the bag after you empty it. As I'm sure you're aware it won't be a permanent change though! All the best for the rest of your pregnancy, and I'm looking forward to seeing how your stoma situation changes in the postpartum period. xxx
@sjokkoladehjerte2 жыл бұрын
I just want to say thank you, i got kinda emotional watching the video, with how helpful and 'there every step of the way' her nurses were and then to see you in the comments wanting so badly to help is the best. So even though i don't personally have a stoma, thank you❤️ (Context; i am bedridden, my diagnosis are on a brink of a new discovery and they are working on the research papers, but it's looking promising so far, though I'm being put in the middle of doctor politics right now.. and I'm just hurt that my doctor's would not be hopeful with me. As the surgeries so far is giving people as bad as me, their life back, so even if it would be shown to not be permanent, how much would not almost a year of life- actual life- mean. To say it's not worth it 'because it might come back' is not something you would say to cancer patients, now is it, but it's the argument they tried on me. And it's just good to see the empathy flourishing in this field, after I've had an emotional week.)

I've heard that pregnancy makes the bowels do all sorts of weird things. The growth of the uterus pushes all the organs around and the hormones bouncing around in the blood stream stimulate the bowels. So, I imagine having a stoma while pregnant is way harder and more challenging. I'm wishing you all the best of luck and the best outcome possible for you and your baby.

Loved this video!! I’ve had my stoma for 11 years and just gave birth to my daughter in September! I can relate to so many of your struggles. One thing that’s really helped me preserve the life of my bags has been to use tegaderm tape (clear tape that they use to keep your IV on your skin), on top of the edges of the sticky part that attaches to my tummy. You can buy a big roll. It’s been my best ostomy hack to date!

I had a physical job with a stoma - and have 2 suggestions to protect your bag from leaking and a blow-out. First, you can reinforce it with additional tape. I used Brava(R) Elastic Barrier Strips, available by Coloplast. Also, my dad made me a protective shield with a knee pad and elastic and buckle around my waist. I could be moderately active at ease!

Hannah, you don't even know how useful this video is for so many people- whether with stoma themselves, or their friend or family, or even without related experience. While I didn't experience pregnancy while I had my stoma due to cancer, I am so grateful for you being so open about yours & your experiences with it. Your previous videos really helped me get into a better mindset about having an ileostomy. Watching this video reminded me of so many bag changes and just trying to nail down everything. I only had my stoma for 6 weeks and it changed so often during that time. We rarely got the cutting correct, had to do so many changes when "Sally" was active, and I had many leaks/raw skin/adhesive issues. It turns out, I'm also VERY allergic to medical adhesives. My husband did every single one of my bag changes that wasn't done by a stoma nurse because I just didn't have the energy while recovering from surgery. Sometimes, you just need help. Thank you for also talking about how mentally exhausting it is and for continuing to educate people about stoma life!

While most of the people I work with are “beyond childbearing years” (read: grandmas with colon cancer,) we do see a fair number of young people, including a couple of gals who had their ileostomy creations while pregnant. While our wound/ostomy nurses are AWESOME, there’s def not enough representation of stomas in pregnancy. I especially appreciate hearing your thoughts about the aesthetics, as we deal mostly with the transparent postop pouches for teaching and assessment. Totally agree, the flaps on Hollister pouches are a total PITA, especially when they’re new. 💩 Can’t wait to hear about your third trimester and postpartum experiences, and for you to meet your baby!! ☀️

Althea. I was diagnosed with UC the end of 2019. Year of 2020 I did not respond to any medications and progressly I got worst. 2021, I was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. They removed my colon. I now have a ileostomy. Getting use to it was not a problem. I now can eat pretty much anything I want and have gained 21 lbs back from the 72 lbs I lost. In a couple of months it will be a year and I will be having surgery to reverse my bag. I have to say it is not bad with a bag. I pretty much do anything I want to with my bag. I am at the gym every morning for 2 hours and a lot more active now. Hannah is good explaining all of this. Hopefully you will improve and never go through this but if you do it is not the end of the world.

Congratulations to you….hopefully your sweet baby has safely arrived! I worked as an RN one hundred years ago until my children came along. I cared for a fair number of patients with stomas in hospital, on Gen Med floor, and I was curious to see if things have changed much. I came across your utube and watched you talk/show/tell about your experiences managing stoma care while you were pregnant, as you adapted. You are so confident and positive. I applaud you so much for sharing openly and honestly, and with humor! Your medical assessments are sound and you are a very good teacher/educator. Thank you for the time and effort you put in to making your progressive videos. Doubtless there were days you were exhausted and busy, yet you continued to record. I know you inspire so many people who have a stoma and care for themselves or have assistance with care. You are a breath of fresh air! I loved your baby belly dances in the mirror! 👩🏻⚕️ On a side note, 👩🏻⚕️ I noticed you had some areas of your face that look just like my skin when I have a flare up of a skin condition called peri-oral facial dermatitis. Skin is irritated and inflamed, (dermatitis) around the mouth (peri-oral) can be around the nose, and can spread toward the chin. It kind of looks like acne at times, and it itches and hurts at the same time.. You may already know all about it, and have a dermatologist who treats you. If not, a dermatologist can help you with diagnosis and treatments. If you tried topical over the counter steroid cream, such a Cortaide, you know that that only makes it worse. Odd, but true. Topical prescription cream 2X daily to get it under control and healed is recommended first for mild to moderate cases, and some times an oral antibiotic is also added 2X daily for stubborn or moderate to severe case. It comes and goes, often no known cause. Can flair when life is especially stressful. That happens to me. I can go one to three years between flairs. Some people who get this form of skin problem ALSO have Rosacea. I do. Redness and irritation on areas of face. This is a dermatology thing too. Different from peri-oral facial dermatitis. Can flare up and cycle also. Topical cream. Face wash and moisturizer as recommend by dermatologist. Often seen in families, as is true for us. If you are nursing your baby dermatologist will discuss oral antibiotic options if you need it. BEST wishes to you as you begin parenting! The US Navy has a slogan used in campaign ads “the toughest job you will ever love.” I have long said that I think it is most apropos for parenting! Cheers!

I did grow up with a disabled mother but her being hard of hearing isn't the same as my walking disability and my chronic pain. It never hurt her physically and while her issue made me an advocate too from a very young age now I had to learn to advocate for different things suddenly. Like I was used to telling people to please repeat themselves when I noticed my mom didn't understand them, something my mom is very thankful for and I have done ever since I was a very young child and really clued in on all of the signs that my mom didn't hear something(can't even tell you what it is really it's just second nature to me and subconscious at this point).

Okay this has been said a hundred times, but I think the algorithm just needs to know: Thank you so much for your content Hannah! I've been following you for five years now and you've always been so helpful with getting more comfortable talking about sex. And now I know a lot more about a condition I didn't know about before you got it! So much respect for handling Mona along with the baby.

I’m so sorry you experienced that stoma pain! Your honest and open videos are so wonderful at making us all feel united. (Sadly often by different types of pain). I’m currently dealing with a severe case of Shingles on my face…and currently being in such excruciating pain makes me empathise with you to the highest extent! Pain is ROUGH STUFF. ❤️ Sending you so much love and hope you’re not in as much discomfort after finding the right size. ❤️ xxx

Thank you for sharing your positive energy while also being real about the whole emotional side of things. Since my UC has been acting up a lot I've been super scared of getting a stoma at one point in my life and you and other people talking about it so openly is helping so much in combating that fear.

Very interesting and I have all the respect for you, Hannah!! You never really complain or pitty yourself and just focus on finding solutions. But I guess thats what it takes having a cronic illness. Still very admirable. All the best for you and your baby xxx

My baby bellies were always so itchy from all of the stretching, so I'm sure that doesn't help the situation! I hope you're doing great today!

This was so so interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience. I also think it's amazing that you had a great team who helped throughout the process so far and thank goodness for the NHS because I can't imagine going through that whole long and frustrating process and then having to pay loads for it. Wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy!

Thank you SO MUCH for educating me and the rest of your audience on this! I'm graduating from nursing school in a month and I've only ever seen really sick, elderly patients with stomas (acute patient stays just happen more frequently with the elderly). I've never thought about what a younger patients experience might be or these big bodily changes like pregnancy and how they impact an ileostomy. And, honestly, you gave me so much insight about body image and picking a bag that feels comfortable and makes you confident. I should've realized the importance for older patients too, but hearing it from someone younger just made it click.

The part about adhesives is so interesting to me because when I was pregnant I reacted to everything. I couldn't even wash my body except with water. This is such a fascinating topic, thank you for taking the time to share with us all

I've got an ileostomy, coming up on 4 years as well! I always always wear flange extenders, they make me feel like I've got added protection and I've never had any leaks or the bag lifting. When you go swimming again I'd definitely recommend flange extenders to keep it extra water tight!

The card the nurse used to measure your stoma looks exactly like the one student midwives use to learn how to measure dilatation of the cervix 😂 on that note, I love learning about how different health conditions impact or interact with pregnancy, and this video has made me feel much more confident in caring for any pregnant people with stomas I might encounter in my career! Pls give us an update about how it all worked intrapartum and postpartum if you’re able or willing ❤️

Amazing video! I've had a stoma for 3 years now and your video's have helped me immensely. Being able to follow you on your pregnancy journey is really helpful (I'd like to have kids in the future). You should definitely check with your stoma nurse if you can get the opaque version of the Dansac bags. I've been using those ever since surgery.

Thank you for sharing this! I’m not pregnant but recently had an ileostomy surgery and getting used to everything has been so hard, and trying to get used to the whole process of having a stoma has been a massive learning curve. I cannot thank you enough for helping me (and I’m sure others) in the same situation feel normal and seen 💜

Hi, thank you for making this video. I'm mid-40s with a colostomy (I'm not pregnant) but just wanted to say I hear you. Watching you learn and adapt is so inspiring. I use the flat Salts bags (in black) and think they are amazing. I have a retracted stoma and my stoma nurse can't believe I'm getting away with the flat ones. The hard plates on the other designs just seem to pop off my skin (we're all different eh?) Thank you for being honest with how difficult it can be with the daily challenges/leaks/sore skin etc most people only bring the positives to KZbin and I really need to hear someone else's story that it's not all sunshine and roses with a stoma (even if we're VERY grateful about being able to have one) xx

I don't have a stoma nor do I know anyone who does, but your videos on the topic are so interesting and informative that I watch all of them. I didn't even realize how long this one was until it was over! Thank you so much for being willing to teach us!

If you like the pelican bags try their pelican modiVi bags ... fabric is practically identical to the coloplast ones and they fold in half . They also come in black as well as 'skin colour' if you struggle with the pelican unsticking then you can stick them on the coloplast skin patches, yes it an extra step and a bit of a faff as you have to cut a hole for the stoma . But it means that you get all the benefits of the modaVi bags without the skin issues like I did . The coloplast Brava skin patches are square so cover a lot of skin giving extra security and due to the size the hole can be massive. Good luck with being a new mother. I love your videos your openness and honesty. I have only just come across your videos and I really wish I found you earlier. I have had my ileostomy 2 years ago now and still feel unsettled frustrated and I get very upset. Thank you for making me smile and saying it as it is! Lots of love xx🥰 Oh I forgot to mention have you seen comfizz's products? You will love their waist band it is so soft and comfy and hold everything in stops your bag from flapping about and added benefit it holds your podgy wobbly bits in! Fae better than the velcro bags you have. (I have them too and never used them) the Confizz range also includes high waisted pants, boxers, even thongs. They do them in different colours and sizes and do vests as well if you feel you need level 2 (slightly firmer) support. Plus they are available on prescription! 😁

I had a temporary colostomy after almost dying from gallstone pancreatitis. It lasted 3 months and I was only 1 month postpartum when I had it.. I couldn't imagine having it WHILE pregnant. You're amazing and so strong. 💙

You are seriously changing lives with these videos Hannah, thanks for normalising something that is affecting so many people across the world but just isn't spoken about much. I don't have a stoma but have a close friend who may be getting the op soon due to her UC so I'm trying to understand how it may affect her, your vids have totally saved her mental health

Took a whole morning but great video. I work for a place that sells continence supplies and while we do sell stoma supplies we mostly sell catheter supplies, pads, incontinence products and woundcare supplies so that is where most of our product training is focussed. I love learning about this from you and have definitely put some of the learning into practice at work. Thank you, and Mona and the baby for making such an interesting video!
