Hey Family, we decided to share this video to give you insight on how the healthcare system can be unsupportive, especially in the black maternal health rate. 🥺 Unfortunately, I was dismissed from the Ascension, St. Vincent Riverside Family Medicine Center in Jacksonville Florida because I decided to have a home birth. This medical facility refused to care for me during this pregnancy because I went against their systematic approach to healthcare. As I wanted to take more of an autonomous approach to my healthcare and my pregnancy, I realized that not every medical facility is supportive of that. I now choose to give birth at home, and this will be my third time having this experience at home and it has been liberating! Never be afraid to try something different and take autonomy over your own life and healthcare experience.

I was dismissed from an OB in the Ascension system in Birmingham, AL for the same reason when I was pregnant with my third baby. I wasn’t mad though, it turned out to be a blessing because come to find out I was having hypoglycemic episodes and my OB hadn’t even addressed it. My lab work revealed my sugar had dropped into the low 40s after the 1hr glucose test, even though I tested after having eaten a huge breakfast. The OB office had never called me to address this critical blood sugar. The midwife that I switched to discovered it when reviewing my records. She was awesome, and if any of you are in the Birmingham area and looking for a midwife, Lauren with Birmingham Midwifery is a fantastic option.

I am a black woman , Christian, and a retired nurse who does not do traditional Western medicine because I agree that it's big money business. But when more than one person is involved in your care, there is a higher propensity for legal implications and I would have done the same thing. As a nurse I never allowed any other nurse to give my patients any medication even if I was on my break because I never wanted to be held accountable for someone else's mistake . It's called CYA to prevent from being sued. Trust me it wasn't because you're black it's because their attorneys advised against it. Trust me. .

Hello I’m a nurse as well pregnant with my 8th baby. In each pregnancy my children would always measure on the smaller growth percentile before and after they were born. Today i had an ultrasound and for the second time the NP came in to the room to yet again remind me how small my baby is. Mind you i had to take off work to go to this appointment because I’m a school Nurse working the same hours that the clinics are open. So i responded to her saying ma’am this is nothing new everyone of my babies have been smaller than others. My biggest baby was 5lbs 12 oz. And my smallest was 4lbs 9 oz. So today i was informed they want to do two Non Stress Tests a week an Ultrasound weekly and that’s not including a now weekly OB Appt. All of this they want to do just in case and they use the terms preventive and it just seems they do this for extra money. We have private and public insurance. Also i was induced with the last baby because of my BP which was fine but this time i did a lifestyle and diet change to overcome that and now that my BP is better with no need for medicine, i feel they just finding something to bill me on. Do you think i should cancel the NST? Because they told me the babies blood flow and fluid was great so i don’t see the point in coming in two to three times a week.

There is little to no extra money in for a noninvasive non stress test but they will lose money if not done b/c to your insurance company that looks like a “gap of care.” Basically, it looks like your doctor did not provide acceptable standard of care so the insurance will refuse to pay for much of anything regarding your care. But my opinion is, if you made the decision to deliver at home. The honors are on you to find out howbto go about it. That's not your OBGYN's job nor the hospital to provide you with that information at all. Whether that is their competition or not. You have to figure out what you are gonna do and what you need to do to deliver your baby if you not gonna use the services of the hospital.

Then I realized this is spiritual warfare, just to stand my ground. Finally a light bulb went off, and I decided to do home birth. When you go into the hospital to give birth, they have your body positioned wrong to deliver. They do not take into consideration the different body positions that will allow your body to release the baby with ease. I don't take epidural, it causes harm to your body and nervous system over time. My Sister is a Nurse Practitioner and strongly advise me to give birth at home. Respectfully with the rates of maternal and neonatal morbidity, especially within ethnic minority groups like us are alarming. The more babies you have the harder your uterus will have to work to contract after birth (hence more severe cramping after each baby) This increases the chances of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) and associated risk ie heart disease. This risk increases significantly after 5 births. Regarding post dates the risk of placental insufficiency (placental function starts to decrease) increases significantly. Induction also increases the risk of PPH. Although it’s inconvenient, try not to take it personally. They’re protecting their liability. Especially in a country where healthcare is so expensive. I know God will provide all your needs. (Student midwife in 🇬🇧) God bless

I had issues with my Cigna insurance so it delayed my prenatal care until about 7 months pregnant and no one wanted to take me that late in the pregnancy. But I eventually found someone. But......here we go....as soon as i get there the nurse practitioner barely gave her name and starts talking about induction at 39 weeks...mind u i'm only 30 weeks at this point and i have given birth naturally twice before. So after that appointment i decided to go back just for an anatomy scan and never returned. I just showed up at the hospital whilst in labor and a random nice midwife helped me deliver at 39 weeks 6days and i gave birth in about 20 mins. To God be the Glory.

So studying insurance information, coding and billing..everything..procedure or test is a code that must go in your file to the insurance carrier. When you refuse certain procedures it is actually written as non- compliance because the insurance cannot be billed and the provider cannot be paid. And yes you will be dropped by the provider.
@SueDeNym08
@SueDeNym08 4 ай бұрын
It's not non-compliance to decline a diagnostic test or preventative procedure. Non-compliance is supposed to be used when a patient is already on a course of treatment and fails to properly follow the prescribed treatment. It's deviation from a treatment to which they previously consented. Labeling a patient who exercises their right to informed consent (including non-consent) as non-compliant is a coercive practice and deprives patients of their rights.

After working in healthcare for years, yes it’s necessary. Things change with each pregnancy. It’s important to remember not everyone knows when the have a STI, not everyone is honest about their drug & alcohol use, & things like HIV status are important to know during pregnancy/labor/delivery. Not every provider feels comfortable being legally responsible for a woman birthing at home & not all births (home births included) go as planned or without incident. I’m all for home births but, if something goes wrong…then what? A doula or midwife may not be able to address that situation. Do what you want but, don’t be so stuck on “all natural no medication” that you unwittingly harm yourself or your baby. There is no necessity to have pain normal or not. Not everyone is built the same. You can endure…others can’t & that makes them no less a woman/mother than someone who can. Of course it’s a business?!?! Should it be free? Does it cost too much? Yes, but nothing in life (and certainly delivering a life) is free. The reason insurance companies don’t cover midwifery is because when /if something goes wrong…people want to sue for unheard of amounts! Continuity of care is healthy. Y’all said “history” as for why you didn’t need all of the labs & tests. True, I would tell all of my patients their partners are an extension of them, their wants, needs, & expectations. Birth plans are great to have as a template for the delivery HOWEVER, they rarely happen as planned. It’s called life 🤷🏽‍♀️😩🤗. It’s not solely because you challenged them. Please remember doctors/hospitals are legally required to perform certain test/procedures. They will lose their jobs if they treat you different. Antoine, diabetes DOES NOT always work like that. Please use your voice but remember, your choice means you’re responsible for the outcome. Be healthy & blessed everyone.

This is very informative information. It’s important to know that doctor’s have guidelines to follow when it comes to their job. No doctor will be put in a situation that compromise himself or his patient. It’s important to know your health because one mistake could cost a person their life. I experience this with a family member and she was as healthy as they come. But doing childbirth she developed an hematoma and her doctor didn’t know. My niece developed a fever so high that the nurses couldn’t get it down. Eventually, the nurse got ice packs and place them on my niece. I remember Serena the tennis player had a hematoma when she was pregnant. I had already told my niece mother and father what was going on. The next morning the doctor had to do emergency surgery to remove the hematoma from the abdomen and use a vacuum to suction the rest of the blood out. This almost cost my niece her life. I was there the whole time to educate the nurses and the doctor. I was my niece advocate and I knew what was happening when she first turn sick after giving birth to her first child. This was over 3 years ago this year.

I agree with wanting to have control over your birthing experience, but some tests and precautions are necessary.

Some tests are required for quality care. Some people are not truthful, and I have seen babies be born with STDs. The mother could have been treated prior to the delivery. You are correct; patients have a choice. It is correct that a baby can be delivered 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the due date. It is not only a business, but the safety of the mother and baby should be the front and center focus. You and your husband are informed and that is really a blessing. I think that hospital is a private facility. Health care in the US is expensive compared to other developed countries. This practice doesn't want to take the liability of something happened with a home delivery, since this is not part of their practice.

OB GYN Drs have to carry expensive malpractice insurance and usually every birth is liable until age 18. Some states costs of insurance very high. Many OB docs will not accept patients who are more than 20 wks because they don’t know the medical history of the patient or pregnancy. So many uninsured deliver enroute or in the ER because they are followed by no one. OBGYNs have guidelines and testing they will attempt to follow to decrease the chances of being sued because a child has developed with medical issues and medical bills. The parents file a lawsuit stating they would have terminated the pregnancy had they KNOWN defects were present so docs order and recommend many tests.. Some Drs just quit the OB part eventually make less money , avoid the insurance costs and just stick to the GYN or Gynecological practice. ❤️

I’m a physician and hope to clear a few things up. There are a lot of things at play here. 1. If a doctor starts to see you as a patient, they are legally obligated to follow you until birth and are responsible if something goes wrong. Say for instance, something abnormal shows up on your lab work, screening test, or you develop a complication… that physician is now responsible for you and baby. 2. Continuity of care is important to all physicians b/c not all providers are created equally, unfortunately. There is a spectrum of “acceptable care” which gives doctors some lead way in how they run their practice. If I’m seeing you, I know what has and hasn’t been done. I also know you as a patient and can somewhat anticipate your needs and desires. Hate to say it, but there are incompetent doctors and no one wants to work behind a shitty doctor. So seeing one person gives the doctor confidence in the care you’ve received. 3. It is a woman’s choice to have a home birth but she must find a practitioner. Usually, on her own b/c as medical doctors we do not recommend home births. That why we also don’t do them. So legally, an OB would not refer a patient to undergo a treatment that is not medically recommended by our boarding agency. 4. There is a “trust but verify” model used in medicine. Many of the test we do are also required by your insurance company. There are metrics we as physicians have to meet that tells insurance companies we are providing “high value care.” So altho we may trust you when you say you don’t need HIV and other testing… our office gets dinged for not doing it b/c it looks like we aren’t doing the right thing by our patients. In a sense, it is a business but it isn’t a business promoted by doctors. Insurance companies have a lot to say when it comes to actual patient care. This is b/c they have big time lawyers advocating for them on Capitol Hill. Insurance companies find anyway not yo pay doctors these days. They will send “gap of care” letters letting us know that we didn’t do a certain test or procedure and give us a timeframe to get it done before they deduct payment. 5. Midwives are cheaper b/c most insurances won’t pay for their services b/c it’s not recommended as safe. So they have to make it feasible for patients to pay out of pocket. There are some that accept insurance but they typically deliver at hospitals where there is always an OB available in the event of an emergency. I’m not aware of any insurance company in the US that will pay for a home birth. 6. I’m all for your right to choose your delivery method. Just wanted to give more insight as to why things are the way they are. Blessing to you and your family. I pray you have a safe, uncomplicated pregnancy, birth, and recovery ❤️

@@elishar.lockhart1076 yes, I usually don’t comment but doctors get such a bad rep when in reality it isn’t us. It’s the pharmaceutical and insurance companies. I sit on the state legislature fighting for the ability to do what’s best for my patients without having to answer to non-medical professionals (aka big pharma and insurance). But my boarding agency follows the “health shouldn’t be a business” philosophy which limits what we can do on capital hill. Meanwhile, insurance companies and big pharm follow the “healthcare is a business” model. They pay lawyers top dollar to lobby on their behalf. While most medical boarding agencies refuse to allow lobbyist for medical doctors. Again, thank you for reading and understanding ❤️ Doctors fight tirelessly for our patients. We are just outnumbered and our voices mean nothing.

Speaking as a health care professional, some of those things are done systematically simply because it has to be. We have had women come in with a discharge and swear up and down that they are not sexually active but test positive for pregnancy. A woman will say that she is married in a monogamous relationship but test positive for an STD. So yes, these tests are ran on every pregnant woman because the ultimate goal is to bring a safe and healthy baby into the world and it starts by making sure that mom is healthy. So if she has any of thse things that was tested for, she can get treated for it.

Women are not machines and the Lord gives us the ability to conceive butt the Lord gives us wisdom - it is taxing on a womb. It takes 9 mos for the baby to develop, so after delivery the womb needs “rest” to come back normal. We don’t conceive w our wombs - we carry w our wombs.. smthg called a prolapsed womb (body come down) can result fr the stress on the womb. Some women can take it but can be hard on the body for others. Wombs need a rest - maybe some doctors are aware and don’t want the risk. May this mother and family be safe and healthy. I haven’t listened to the entire recording, but I read your description. You have to be careful with using your channel to put businesses on blast due to disagreements. I hope you understand your rights and exercise them appropriately. I also hope you understand that patients do not always tell the truth. For example, patients will say they don’t use drugs and if not tested can cause a medical emergency for certain procedures. Maternal care is a partnership. The doctor is responsible for ensuring 2 patients are healthy. If you aren’t comfortable with the doctor, find a new one. I have done so. Also, the doctor must feel they can work with you as a patient. Systems aren’t wrong and sometimes can be unnecessarily inflexible but sometimes those systems exist for a purpose.

I fully agree with your comment. Rules are rules procedures are procedures. You can't just say nah I'm good on taking the hiv test to shave the cost of your bill down. People will be at the doctor like they're at an auction or deli being so specific on what they want and don't want. And God forbids someone is on drugs, lie say they aren't and their child have some birth defects. So it's set in place that everyone gets drug and std tests, I don't see an issue. If that practice isn't set up to accommodate home births, OR if for some reason they don't think that a home birth is appropriate for your particular situation, then it really is best to part ways and look for a different practice. Just as you as the mother have to make a decision about what kind of risks you can live with in terms of your birth plan, the doctor who works with you also has to decide how much mediolegal risk they can live with. The risk level has to be acceptable to both parties; if it's not, then a different practice is in the best interst of both parties. I wish you all the best.

Refusing to provide care that is within the scope of the doctor's practice may leave a patient without care. Even temporarily, that is a direct and unnecessary risk to the patient. A more responsible and patient-centered decision would be to continue prenatal care while assisting the patient with a referral and transition into a midwifery practice at a birth center. Doctors who place anything above patient well-being are a risk to their patients.

If both they and the midwife services are involved in the pregnancy, they don't want to be held liable for anything that may occur and by law they could be because if it were to go before a court of law judgement would not be able to differentiate who is at fault so both parties would be held liable.

Sorry to hear about what yall both had to endure! I also was in a situation where my old ob/gyn doctor dismissed me as a patient. The same day I had an appointment and didn't get seen. I was crying and in pain because I had no idea why they would treat me they way they did. I actually went to the emergency room the same night to check on my baby. The devil tends to try to mess with us knowing that we are carrying the Lord's creation. Your baby is gonna be someone special in this world we will need one day! Praying for protection healing and guidance through yall pregnancy!! I found a better doctor and my baby is doing great and is growing in this tummy of mine. God bless you both!!

I am sorry that you had to go through that. I do believe that you should have been giving the choice to choose a midwife as you please without regards of what stage of pregnancy that you decide. I think that the medical facility does have to operate as a business in order to cover their overheads. If not, they would not be in existence or provide quality of care. I also believe that it is unreasonable to not allow them to run basic bloodwork and tests to provide you that quality of care. you might have not had gestational diabetes in your previous pregnancy, but it changes in your current. This goes for all other health conditions too. I love watching your channel, and I am excited for your family expanding. keep up the good work

You can choose your own midwife but an Ob/GYN can NOT refer you to one UNLESS they are affiliated with births IN the hospital

Well if you go somewhere for them to care for you. You should work with them to help you. Everything isnt perfect but alot of ppl come to the doctors office and tell them what to do. Im a healthcare worker. Lets work together but to come somewhere experienced in what you need help with and tell what to do is crazy.

I was dropped by a primary doctor in my 30's who was pushing medication on me. I looked at it as a blessing and got a Doctor who actually cared and ended up going to the gym losing almost 60 pounds and not needing meds because I changed my lifestyle. Sometimes rejection is a blessing.

You both stated using a midwife at end of pregnancy. If you prefer using the midwife, refusing test, refusing medical advise from your doctors. Just use the midwife. It sounds like you are giving the hospital a hard time for no reason.

I also was dropped from my primary care office after my original doctor retired. They told me that my doctor was no longer there and no doctor there in that office "was going to see me." So devastating!

There must be a reason you were dismissed if you do not follow the obgyn recommendations you are not victims you chose to have multiple pregnancies which means a higher risk

I mean no disrespect to anyone, I’m just saying it takes a lot for a provider to dismiss a patient. …been doing this a long time….

Well, multiple births pregnancy carries a high risk of complications already. You decide to take a risk because you think you know better than them and you want to show everyone you know better. Your doctor tried to protect you... It's not systematic approach , its evidenced based care do you understand the difference?

As a mother of 5 and a practicing ob/gyn, I know that you will deliver well in Jesus name. Please remember that everybody has rights and nobody should be forced to do what they do not feel comfortable with. Self-autonomy applies to the patient as well as medical personnel. Also obstetrics is a totally different ballgame due to the huge liability that obstetricians take with each patient. If a patient declines my recommendation, I document it and move on. If a patient declines all my recommendations then it shows there is no mutual trust in the relationship and we shouldn't have a doctor-patient relationship.
