Rejoice and give thanks with this version of “How Can I Keep From Singing,” performed Nov. 24 by Olivia Holgate and Jim Treyens, with Dr. Julie Neish, music director, on piano. It was the prelude to last Sunday’s Holy Eucharist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bremerton.
The words to this song were first published on Aug. 27, 1868, in The New York Observer, titled "Always Rejoicing" and attributed to "Pauline T.” Robert Lowry then published the words set to his music in the 1869 song book, Bright Jewels for the Sunday School.”
There Quakers adopted it as a hymn in the 20th century, and Pete Seeger popularized it in the 1960s folk revival.
Have a great Thanksgiving!!
