Continuing to add new talent to their roster, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers welcomes Nicolas Viana to the label for his debut EP. Based in Tucuman, the Argentinean artist first emerged two years ago and has enjoyed a meteoric ascent in the world of progressive and organic house. On the strength of a contribution to One Of A Kind’s ‘Melody Masters Exclusive’ collection, Nicolas would go on to record projects for Amulanga, Flug Lab, Nordic Voyage, Peace Symphonies and more. Also finding a home on label affiliate Strangers Beats, Nicolas now makes his debut on parent imprint Or Two Strangers with ‘Ballad Attack’.
As the fiery rhythms and exotic percussion of opener ‘Ballad Attack’ unfold, it’s clear that Nicolas’ craft is continuing to evolve. Geared towards a peak time dance floor, the Argentine’s muscular grooves, quirky lead and ultrasonic effects unite in a colourful marriage, ultimately leading to a captivating break. Bubbly arps and sweeping effects take centrestage across the interlude, before phasing sonics emerge from the marine architecture, onwards to a thrilling finale.
Beneath the powerful waves of ‘Ballad Attack’ lies the equally epic sounds of ‘Come Closer’. Presenting a confident club energy from the start, Nicolas’ recalibrated sonics, metallic hooks and deconstructed vocals blanket a crunchy percussive framework. With an infectious energy that could win over even the most discerning of heads, Viana pulls from his expansive repertoire across the main break, infusing wavy arps with striking stabs as the beats drop for the ultimate dancefloor rush.
The release concludes with the hypnotic sounds of ‘Deserted Land’. Here Nicolas continues to showcase the progressive side of his studio repertoire with a hopeful blend of exotic drums, granular stabs and uplifting top-lines that are nicely suited to the morning hours. It rounds out three impressive creations from Nicolas, which not only make for a huge Or Two Strangers debut, but should see considerable play time across the remainder of 2023. Highly recommended.
