I switched from premiere pro to resolve & haven’t looked back. If premiere dropped the subscription model at some point, I’d maybe go back. I often find the new updates break the software so I couldn’t take it anymore back when I used it. I heard it’s much better now but still sticking to resolve.

The big thing for me is software updates. I wish we went back to the world of yearly software releases with limited release support. If I could buy the Creative Cloud 2023 release of Adobe software for a chunk of money, I would do that if it meant I didn’t have to sign some lousy year long contract for $50+ a month. Granted, when you think about how often people upgrade I believe the cost levels out. Subscriptions are just such a bad thing to work with financially. I don’t want to budget $50+ a month for the rest of my career. If I could just buy software and then not have to worry about budgeting for it if I’m having a tough month for business, that would be preferable.

I haven't had an issue with Premiere ever since I made sure that all my drivers were up to date always. I used to also be plagued with crashes but honestly in the last few years ever since I just made sure that my drivers automatically stayed up to date I rarely never have any problems anymore. I have more crashing happening in DaVinci for me personally. I use both and usually only open DaVinci anymore for really deep and troublesome color grading or color correction issues or if I want to utilize the gyro stabilization. But 99% of everything I can do as well and faster in Premiere Pro (just personal preference. I prefer a layer based workflow, likely because in my past life I was a audio engineer and musician and spent years and years working in avid Pro tools so Adobe layer workflow came very natural to me)

Pro editor here. I’ve worked with professional environments using Final Cut7, PremierePro, FCPX and DaVinci Resolve. I mastered all of them. And I guarantee you that Resolve is overall the best. The only reason PP is used nowadays is because more than 10years ago all prod houses decided to standardize editing and they picked PP. PP is clunky, slow, freezes, it does feel outdated and the color controls are literally a joke. The only point I agree is the Media Encoder, but the rest I strongly disagree that objectively PP is better. Again, not being paid to say this and I’ve used the 2 of them for a long time. If you are a PP you are probably scared of making the jump bc u are very comfortable and quick at editing, but trust me, if you give it a shot and edit a few projects u’ll agree!

25+ year professional editor who has used FCP, Avid, Premiere and a host of other editing platforms and daily drive on Premiere. I can tell you, for me, it's not a matter of being scared to switch. I've given Resole multiple chances and it does not live up it the hype. It's limited compared to all of PP's capabilities and has it's own host of issues and bugs. In the last 12 months the revisions to Premiere have made it incredibly stable. For sure Resolve has better grading tools but it's overkill for many editors and the tools in PP get the job done quickly and efficiently. Also not being paid for my opinion LOL.

The 5 reasons Premier is better: -You pay a lot lot more to get the privilege to use it. -You can't own it, only rent it. -You HAVE to go online to use it ( My power machines never go near the internet for security reasons, - Color grading not quite as good. -You need a series of other programs such as after effects, to do the same thing. A few of the reasons most people I know now use DaVinci.

Easy explanation to people who still are confused about node based color grade - look at them as layers. In premiere/after effects you put adjustment layers on top of each other and they function in that order. Its the same with nodes, just instead from from bottom to up, you add node(layer) from left to right.

Matt, I'm a little confused on something. What do you do if you are trying to edit a music video and some footage needs to be color-graded from SLOG 3, but the B-Roll has already been color-graded? If your color space transform is set to SLOG3 S-Gamut3.Cone; won't that mess up the already color-graded footage? I'm a newbie, I just don't want to screw this up. Super important.

If there was any way to make advanced ui customization limited to the Edit Page I'd be on board, but that may be extra difficult if the rest are locked down. I've heard extremely vocal pushback from especially colorists on the idea but imagine there could be some leeway if it's limited to Edit.

When it comes to working with other designers (almost all of them will work with PS and Illustrator), huge timeline with lots of effects, text animations, plugins, back and forth with clients and so on, Premiere Pro just blows Resolve out of the water. I'd love to fully switch to Resolve, but I found my peace and am currently using both (Resolve for color heavy work, and Premiere Pro for text heavy animations, 2D motion design and so on alongside with AE).

DaVinci does have a Remote Render function, but it is more for studios that have more than one computer on the network. You can send that render to a completely different computer, but having a separate app would be convenient :) Exporting a project from Resolve is really easy. Also, DaVinci is so full featured, I’ve very rarely needed plugins since I’ve used it professionally since 2014.

#1 is THE reason I can’t switch. I edit on 3 monitors with a highly customized layout. It makes my work so much more efficient and clear cut (for me). I feel like I’m editing on a tiny laptop screen when I try to use Resolve and have everything crammed onto one screen. Also #5 is part of it for me. I’ve gotten to a point where I’m happy with what I can VERY quickly get good results with Lumetri color. I’m not a colorist, I don’t need most of what Resolve can do with color.

Waiting for your video on Resolve... I switched and haven't looked back. 1) Free / $300 for studio version 2) nodes and professional coloring 3) easy zooming on video using scroll wheel 4) easier deliver page 5) multiple simultaneous GPU support 6) fusion / fairlight integrated within one program 7) stabilization / time stretch on same clip without nesting 8) realtime collaboration superior and cloud based projects... Many more things I enjoy about it as a professional. These outweigh the current limitations but I hope they address the main ones of the customizable interface and the media encoder type of offline exporting.

Hi Matt. I switched to Davinci a few years ago and I love it. I own the studio version, but for a while I used the free version of Davinci and it was more than enough for me. I do miss certain plugins in Premiere, but considering the fact that Davinci barely crashes on me and with free updates without a subscription, it's a monumental win for me. I hope that Black Magic continues on that route. I also have Final Cut but I always end up using Davinci Resolve. I have nothing against Premiere. I do miss it sometimes, but I got tired of countless times crashing on me.

Other than customizable workspaces, nothing else from this list is actually appealing to me. I've used Premiere ever since I was a kid and now using Resolve to edit videos professionally, couldn't be more happier with my choice to go with Resolve. Also, I'm not sure if I agree with the color grading take. Yes, the grading tools in Resolve are a lot more powerful and complicated than PP, but honestly, if you are lazy and just wanna do some basic correction and grading, you can just do everything in one node and by just using the curve and the 3 wheels without much effort and it will always look better than PP with much less effort. Media encoder is pain in the arse, the database system is superior as it's pretty much less prone to be corrupted, and you don't need as many plugins in Resolve because it just has a lot more features built-in but plugins and templates are one of those things that will change over time so it's just a matter of time. It already has changed vastly ever since I switched to Resolve back with V16 and now there are so many KZbinrs and plugins companies like motion vfx making plugins for Resolve.

@LanielPhoto
@LanielPhoto 3 ай бұрын
@@HonkiePlonkie The real reason I and many others changed to DaVinci is for the work flow and capability. The colour page is unmatched by anything in Premiere. The money savings is just a huge bonus on top of it all. I not only enjoy working with it more, but I have saved over $2000 so far, and best of all, never having to go onto the highly insecure internet. I work with a lot of sensitive/private/security stuff - and with Premiere there is a strong danger that Adobe gets to see it all. Plus the cloud is a leaky sieve. You can buy a third party option of Premiere where you don't have to go on the internet (you literally own the software like in the old days) but at a tremendous costs. Add thge fact that I like to "own" my software, not rent it. Same way I like to own my car, and not rent it.

I'm convinced Adobe has always emphasized features galore in their products, including Premiere, to expand their subscriber base at the expense of software engineering quality -- in spite of anything they've said recently. Without better performance and stability, Premiere's flexible interface and endless "featurism" don't matter all that much. Even with the recent timeline responsiveness improvements, I found that Premiere just crashed sooner. In addition, Media Encoder is great in concept but is also extremely crash- and freeze-prone, often after hours of rendering. The same project would usually render without issues from Premiere, leaving the Media Composer as a useless application. Numerous support calls and software re-installations failed to solve any of these issues for my work. That's why I switched from Premiere to Resolve after finishing a large project. To be sure, DaVinci sometimes crashes but not nearly as often as Premiere did on the same Intel-based iMac Pro with similar footage.

1. Davinci’s layout is pretty good, althought if u have a single monitor it can get a little cramped. Still not a big deal. 2. Yeah Media Encoder can be useful, but in Davinci u can render each clip separately from a timeline. Not sure if u can do that i Premiere, I might be wrong tho. 3. In my opinion Davinci has a simpler project manager, u can access every project and see the thumbnail by just opening the software. No project files lost no corrupt files, it just works. 4. Yes Premiere has more plugins/presets but not really by that much. All the main and most used plugins are in both softwares. Also Davinci has “Reactor” which is open source package manager and anyone can make a script or plugin and share it. 5. It is easier to grade in a software u are familiar with. In Davinci it is very easy to grade. It is just my take on this, I used to use Premiere, now I am using Davinci and its been great.

In my Premiere days I never dared to try to continue editing while exporting something with Media Encoder. I usually couldn't even use my browser or Explorer or my export would crash or have glitches. This was across multiple systems too, with decent hardware. I had to start the export and walk away from the computer until it was done. With Resolve I can at least use other programs. Resolve's h264 and h265 encoding isn't great, though, so I tend to just export a huge DNXHR file, then use Shutter Encoder to export from that to h264/265. With this I can work in Resolve while it's running. I do wish the Resolve interface was more customizable, but I read a couple places that they keep it mostly "locked" because it keeps the program faster and more stable. So I guess I'm fine with adjusting to a program that actually runs rather than customizing one that crashes all the time 😄

Idk Premiere Pro and its constant crashes and performance inconsistencies draw me away years ago. I don’t agree with the premise that Premiere is more user friendly. If you see Davincis modules are made for each stage of post production with the UI optimised for each step. I think it is just something to get used to. Also it seems that you are very biased with your personal experience and unless this is a sponsored comparison for Adobe I don’t think that a lot of people who have switched would agree with these points.

@@edanbenatar Technically yes, you are correct, I am using plugins that other NLE's have as features, however, they do eventually get incorporated. What I do like and love is the stability of the app compared to others that seemingly update every month or so. That is the trade off, I've lost work on many an occasion in PP, FCP is so stable and when it does crash, I loose nothing since it actively saves. So the options are you are constantly saving your project to prevent loosing your edit all the time or you no longer have to think about it. Personally, I prefer not having that albatross around my editing neck and deal with a few missing options that I can make up in other ways. I've also worked with Avid Media Composer and that app crashed all the time for being the industry standard, it was never that great.

That's your big wow as to why premiere is better. I agree with most or some of your points, but the huge list of why DaVinci literally blows Premiere out out of the water starting with stability and less crashing in the middle of my large video edits in addition to everything being right in Resolve and the number of more & more plugins being created regularly, and the fact that I know more people (including myself) that have switched from premiere and prefer DaVinci over premiere by far, and how about that HUGE price difference. Left Premiere years ago and haven't looked back or missed premiere. If it wasn't for needing to edit previous existing projects in premiere I wouldn't even have it installed. Thx for the content you put out, but this video only shows desperation for content on your end. I guess all content can't be great. Oh yeah, most of it isn't...

Good points but you missed the major one... Price. I am a switcher from Premier Pro because of the crashes, I must admit that Resolve was a pain to learn but I've come to feel more secure using Resolve. On the other hand with the latest update, I am beginning to like Premier Pro again, it's fast and you can't beat that text-based editing. I am on the fence, I spent a year learning resolve and the only choice I have now is to use both programs and exploit their strengths.

A client wanted us to use Resolve, I gave it a shot and everything was good for color, edits, and basic effects. Nodes are great and all, no problem adapting to that. But after having a more complex timeline the software started freezing while changing timelines, looking for effects, and it froze when clicking back to resolve after not using it for 5 min. Once I started using the Fusion Panel (I use a lot of animations for my client's videos) it became even more buggy. Masks randomly disappeared, color messed up repeatedly and it randomly stopped rendering. The render time sometimes grew exponentially and I had to restart my PC in the hope it would render a 1 min reel. I tried on 3 different, powerful, but most importantly, well video-editing optimized computers with different projects but it was always the same. I'm not a newbie to this and couldn't make it work seamlessly. Maybe I’m missing something, maybe with more time or maybe it's optimized for Mac. Still want to master its color tools though. Ae is the dealbreaker for me, I guess. I use it a lot and dynamic link saves me huge render times.

usually performance problems can be avoided by correct caching, on place rendering, not using heavy effects on fusion until just before final rendering and other tricks you learn after using it a while. Of course it might be that your project was such that it caused those problems and it could not be avoided, and there are real bugs in Fusion. But there are some tricks that help you avoid the performance problems.

Agree with these. 15+ years on Premiere migrating to Davinci Resolve. Love DR's responsiveness and stability. And it's price. Adobe's subscription model is unethical IMO. BUT.... PP's room noise reduction (rumble too) is a check box and slider in essential sound panel, works so well. Takes 2 seconds compared to DR's powerful yet complex audio fx. (granted I'm new to it). I also wish DR gave us After Effects style keyframe interpolation controls, even PPs, which stink compared to AE but are way better than Davinci. I do a ton of 2d motion graphics and find DR's keyframe system inadequate. FINALLY: DR's masking is super cool and versatile, so powerful, but why can't we constrain proportions when resizing? I want an exact bigger square, not my best guess at a bigger square. I must be missing something on that one.

The reason why there are more Plugins made for Premiere Pro (yet) is because of the wide adopted use of Premiere Pro. For years that Software is in many Productions still today the go to Software…. Same with Android vs iOS… First App will mostly be created for iOS becouse of the wider range of users that will use it. But all of that will and can change when the market shifts.. And it shifts rapidly. Resolve is better in so many ways. And the business model behind BlackMagic not even need to charge for the base Programm. We get Resolve FREE… with like almost 95% of all the Features… this fact alone will over time push Premiere to the side… But yes.. Premiere Pro is still market leader in active users. And i started my Editing Career in Premiere Pro aswell. But im so happy that i switched to DaVinci Resolve… Cheers ❤ Good Video

I totally agree with all of what you have said, but I have switched and don’t plan to switch back. My biggest complaint about resolve is the UI, and not being able to customize it. I feel like I spend a measurable amount of time resizing things during an edit session, and don’t even get me started about the dual screen workflow in resolve, it is brutal. I would add that the text editing tools in resolve are buried way to deep to be easily accessed, and key framing text seems to be way deeper in the fusion page the the edit page. So why not work in fusion? Because I cannot reference the edit while I am in fusion, I can only see clips that are part of the comp. I realize that this is similar to premiere and after effects, but it would be great to just have a node in fusion that streamed the output from the edit page for a working reference that was not actively a part of the comp. coming from a music production background, I can only say fair light is not close to being a viable option as your audio engine. BMD needs to do a deep dive into protools and other audio programs to make fair light something that we will use. Having said all of that, i find BMD to be a much leaner company than Adobe, and therefore,way quicker to respond to the marketplace. Also, I shoot with Blackmagic cameras, and I think 5he BRAW codec is worth the price of admission by itself… ahhh, the price of admission, ‘nuff said. Excellent video, I will watch for the antithesis.

Hi Matt! I deduce that you have been a user of Adobe Premiere for a long time and, without going into detail on all points, respecting your opinion and thanking you for your time, I cannot agree with you. Just about the 'Plugins'! The existence of these 'extensions' only proves that the base platform, in this case Adobe Premiere, is not sufficient. It's true, there are also 'n' Plugins for Davinci Resolve but we are talking about another level. Regarding the Color Correction and Compositing capabilities, forget it! We are talking about a 10 to 1 ratio. I gladly subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing the feedback in the opposite direction. Thank you for this opportunity to share my opinion, have a good weekend and best wishes for success.

Hey Matt, so the video you posted a while back about leaving Premiere where you so eloquently nailed an issue I've been wrestling with in Premiere, what you dubbed "timeline speed" and what I've been thinking of as UI responsiveness. In general, I'm a feature editor so I'm not doing wedding videos or corporate videos or anything with simple formats - my timelines tend to have 20+ tracks of audio and a lot going on (I've been editing professionally in television and features for over 20 years). I tried to edit on a project brought to me in Premiere recently and... still... found... it... excruciatingly.... slow.... to... do... the... simplest... of... things... in Pr 2024 once I had a timeline really going (note that I tend to send commands very, very fast to the machine via shortcuts and am working on a 2018 iMac Pro). Da Vinci is still working very smoothly for me. All of the things you mention in this video, though true, are pretty superficial if you're used to jumping between different workflows, NLEs, post houses etc. From what I can tell, Adobe never really fixed its core issue (and believe me, I've had three different multi month long tech support cases open with them trying to resolve it). Just wondering if you or anyone else has had similar experience trying to edit in Adobe and getting little .5-2 second lags (and even beachballs sometimes) while trying to do basic things like move a bunch of clips, or sometimes even more basic things like marking I/O points

Reason #1.1: besides the interface being customizable, it also feels simpler and less cluttered, and feels easier to find tools, while Davinci looks like it's trying to copy the modern aesthetic of an iPad UI, or final cut pro. It's personal preference, but for me prefer the Premiere look. Reason #6: more people use Premiere, so if you ever need to share projects with other editors, chances are they're using Premiere (or Avid if you're editing for bigger gigs). Reason #7: After Effects is more user friendly as a VFX software than fusion (although layers are a bit more limited with compositing), but it's also WAY more user friendly as a motion graphics tool. If you wanna do anything half-complex that's motion graphics related, you'll have a much nicer time in AE than in Fusion. Reason #8: (Another personal preference thing) Captions feel easier to create & modify in Premiere Pro.

@@akyhne VFX professionals use node based compositors, yes. But not motion graphics artists. After Effects is industry standard for motion graphics. Nodes aren't better for everything. Also, I never said After Effects is better; it's just more user friendly for beginners & intermediates. So if you're not doing anything highly complex (which most video editors don't), there's no need to use a node based compositor which has a harder learning curve. Especially when AE already has a wider audience, which means there's more training and plugins/tools available than Fusion.
