@@thelespauldude3283 Well. It's not a matter of how big you are. Some prefer it doing it themselves and others not. With Slash it just didn't work out. He couldn't do both things at the same time. Playing and switching. So he left all the switching and fancy stuff to his tech. Not a big deal. Slash's rig isn't complicated. He also doesn't use many effects. Only on certains songs. He didn't use effects in the old days. He added those later on. Same songs now just sounding like intended when they were in the studio recording it. His most 'relevant' effect is his wah (and in the old days the talk box).

I have no idea what he said, but it sounded great and most importantly , everything is going to be okay!” So we went to a bar and gave his card to the bartender. In comparison, this guy was crystal clear… theres a guitar… 6 Marshall’s, apparently heavily modded, 4 or was it 5? 4X12 bottoms, some buttons… an MXR EQ that requires a SF86 security clearance to see… some other stuff, and did I mention, 600 tube driven RMS watts pushing 20 12” speakers. (Thats right kids…600 watts. Each rig capable of producing 135db… so can you add those together? And whats that, the equivalent of an Atlas V booster in your guest room? basically very simple basically. Is there going to be a quiz?… I feel the need to go to the bar.

Keep on keepin on. In one of his columns he quoted an FOH engineer named Wayne who said “theres no money above the 5th fret”. John chimes in and says this is not his opinion and he likes all the notes… too funny. Actually this quote comes from Tommy Tedesco, who as a member of the Wrecking Crew, played on everything from the theme to Bonanza and the radio show Gunsmoke, to Monkees sessions.

@evanmiller25793 жыл бұрын
Who put this rig together? Had to be Rube Goldberg. All the in and outs into multiple effect gizmo units made no sense to me. 5 delay units, full Mod Pro for a Flanger sound that isn't used for any chorus so need an MXR pedal for that, 4 to 5 line boost pedals, and an MXR EQ pedal with "secret" settings. And the set-up for feedback? Come on. I have to believe there is a much simpler signal path that would produce the same results.
@62SG Жыл бұрын
It's called "playing in a stadium." 100 foot wide stage means you're on a wireless unit, means your switching is done from backstage, means you're standing under a massive lighting rig, means you don't have a live cabinet onstage to get feedback, means all of your pedals are isolated and MIDI controlled, means you have backups of your backups. The fundamental rig is very simple, everything that's complicated is just to facilitate the amount of switching that happens over the course of a three and a half hour show, and to make it very easy to replace any element that breaks down. I've seen Slash in small venues and his rig was made of the same gear but was much simpler: Cable into pedalboard, pedalboard into amp switcher, amps into 4x12 cab on stage.

So why are they playing without a traditional backline? Have wives all gotten together to banish audio and other electronic gear from sight even on stages where musical acts perform now? The wedge monitors were first and are becoming a rare sight, now we're being trained to think of amps behind rock bands as unsightly? I will not stand for this! We must resist! Save the floor wedge! Save the walls of 4x12s! Next they'll be trying to get rid of venue sound systems entirely and just pipe the performance into the audience's earbuds at concerts. Stop the insanity! 😉
@wienerstein28172 жыл бұрын
It's not unsightly it's because guitar players insist on being the loudest thing on stage. There's nothing wrong playing tradition cabs on stage. Just stop making them so fuckjn loud. Millenials and Gen Z aren't impressed with volume anymore. They want clean and precise sound. Times are changing
@DaGuyver Жыл бұрын
Not sure how old this video is. If you're talking about GNR it's easy. Because of their stage setup, screens, lighting, imagery, visual show etc. Second is because Axl uses in-ears. The whole band including Slash switched to in-ears. You basically just need one or two cabs miked up. I believe Slash also used a boxed up dirty speaker sound in Velvet Revolver. His amps on stage were all dummies. Everything is backstage controlled by his tech. Also with GNR everything goes directly into the house system. Different when he was with Velvet Revolver or SMKC. But he also switched to in-ears a long time ago with his "solo". Hence the stage monitors disappeared with SMKC.

It’s not rocket science. Sound engineers over time have realized that the same sound coming from multiple sources just messes the overall mix up for the fans. Guitar coming through a 4x12, a wedge, side fills, all bleeding into every other mic on stage (including the lead vocal) just sounds horrible. Keep the stage volume down and allow the front of house engineer to build the mix with complete control and the crowd gets a better show.
