Crazy Paver Patio and Fire Pit Installation!

We are installing a paver patio with fire pit and sitting wall. We chose a really cool pattern for this patio with several different pavers mixed together. The fire pit is the center of the patio and all the pavers were based around that. This is a tough paver patio for a beginner or DIY but a lot of the same principles apply to a regular patio!

Owners of bigger deeper pits want them bigger and deeper because they don’t like not being able to fit any log in there and they often just toss them in as the fire burns. So they tend to burn bigger fires and they take a toll on pavers. They basically crumble. Mostly ones that get covered with the coals but if there is no metal liner the rest of them crumble but it just takes longer. Regardless this is a beautiful job and you all have some good skills.

Great stuff--thank you for sharing! A couple questions: whats the tarping for at the bottom of the gravel and does it play a role in dealing with freeze/thaw cycle in northeast climates? Also, how do you finish the edging around the stone patio: cement, rebar, or just shovel extra gravel away?

Do you find its better/easier to set with 3/4 clean and 3/8 clean only vs using an inch of sand base over the clean rock?

Definitely, if you use sand you would have to put a non woven fabric down so that the sand doesn’t fall into the clean stone

Thanks a lot! We’re gonna be raising up the base of the fire pit so that the floor is only about 12 inches below the top. And with how large it is I think it’s gonna get plenty of oxygen

If I had to guess this whole project is an easy 30 to 50k job. Paver work is astronomical in my area and using all those small pavers takes a lot of time!

kind of curious where the fire pit's gonna get its air from. you need to leave some gaps near the bottom to allow air to get pulled in.

yeah, plus the bottom of the pit will be raised up quite a bit so the base of the fire will only be about 12 inches or so from the top
