You are the master!! Last night I killed my 1st hog with my new bow "halon 32" Went for speed! gold tip 7.1 gr. Per in with a 85 gr. Stinger(double bevel with bleeder) 310 fps. Hammered the front shoulder. Right threw it ! Into the hart! Did not penetrate the other shoulder.(200+ lbs) Going for FOC never again,, even at 15 yards... Thinking of 150 gr. With micro dia.

I have not been able to shoot anything other than the solids to this point due to funds and I understand your testing, I do want to point out that bone breaks easier than cinder blocks, I had a solid legend 100 grain snap a deer femur bone in 2 then slice threw the other hind quarter nicely, I never found the arrow after searching several days and was really bummed. You are testing all solid broads except for the legend which is super vented compared to the other 4 so it makes sense for it to blow apart because of that right there especially with a cinder block. I will continue to use them due to fact I already own them and cant wait to get my hands on iron will for future
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the comment, Kelly. Great points, indeed. They are definitely good heads. Yes, I am testing all non vented heads except for the Solids, but that is kind of the point; they're just not as durable as the others, due to the extreme venting design. I've used them very successfully on big hogs, and I'm sure they would do fine in most hunting situations. I especially like the large cutting diameter of the 125s. However, for larger animals, they would not be my first choice, due to their relative weakness. I have actually seen hog femurs damage broadheads more than steel flat bar and cinder blocks.
@bigmanlilcoat
@bigmanlilcoat 6 жыл бұрын
The 175 grain solid would dominate. Again this is just a test and anyone swearing off a Broadhead because of this test is a little premature. Had a buddy in Texas go through three different types of broadheads because he said they were crap because everytime he shot a deer, it still didn't die or never found it. Shot placement is a lot of it as well as not trying to shoot through the shoulder of an elk. I like the cutting surface of the Legend.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Zac. That's a good suggestion. I used to shoot Injexions, and liked them, but I prefer the Hexx shaft now. From what I've read, there is no appreciable difference in penetration in most animal situations between the different diameters, as long as the broadhead has a wider cut than the arrow. But in mediums such as I used in this test, I would think the thinner shafts would penetrate slightly deeper.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, commenting and subbing! I really appreciate it. You can certainly shoot mechs with that set up, even with the shorter draw length. I'm assuming your primarily hunting whitetails, is that right? And in my opinion, if you are using a mech, I'd go with one that is known for its penetration. You can check out my vids on different mech tests. The Afflictor or Deadmeat are two of the best that could work well for you. If you were going with a fixed, I'd consider the Exodus or a Magnus. Good luck!

One more question... What type of fletching setup do you run? I love fixed blade heads due to the durability and I'm looking for basically the most durable, but smallest profile fixed head that will minimize planing in the "regularish" process category. What would you recommend?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the question, Kevin. Much appreciated. I've tested a lot of different vanes and configurations, but my favorite by far is 3 Blazers, put on with a helical twist from an Arizona EZ Fletch Mini. That really improves accuracy on long range shots. And increasing my FOC helped as well. My absolute favorite fixed head in the normal price range is the Exodus. It has the best balance of accuracy, penetration, cut size, ferrule strength and edge retention of any fixed blade head in its price range. Another decent option is the Magnus Black Hornet...but I prefer the Exodus, personally. I've taken over 50 animals with it so far, including bull elk, big bears, huge hogs, and African Plains Game. Hope that helps!

Thank you. This was one of my first vids; I think they've improved a lot from those earlier days. Top 3? It largely depends on what I'm hunting. For whitetail, for Fixed heads, I'd say Exodus, Tooth of the Arrow XL, and Kayuga Gen 2 Pilot Cut (and Iron Will Wide if you can afford it). For mechs it's Sevr and Afflictor.

Good test... The cutting edge ranking makes sense for the solid since it is wider than the others but man the way that thing exploded?!? I am using solid legend 175gr this season and they seem far more robust than the 125, the venting on the 125 makes it look so weak vs the 175 which has very little venting. Do you think the more stout 175gr solid head would have fared better? Do you have the other two from the pack and have you seen similar results from those as well?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben. Thank you for watching and commenting. I really do appreciate it. I have several thoughts on it. First of all, shooting into concrete is obviously quite a bit different from shooting into an animal. I know that the Solids have a warranty if they fail under hunting conditions. That being said, I've shot into heavy femurs that cause as much damage to broadheads as shooting into steel flat bar; that's why i prefer a head that is relatively indestructible. Second, SV30 steel is much better than typical stainless, but it is really not the best choice for broadheads. If you research it a bit, you will see that it is even critiqued quite a bit as a knife blade material since it is prone to edge chatter and chipping. It does hold an edge well, under normal conditions, but it does not do well with much of an impact. Well, a broadhead is all about impact, so that's a bit of a problem. Third, there is no doubt in my mind that the 175 gr would be much more durable than the 125. The 125 is so vented that is is no where near as strong as the 175. Since I already use a 75 gr brass insert, I didn't want to add another 175 grains to the tip. But I would be much more confident if I were using the 175 gr model. Fourth, I have taken hogs with the 125 model, cause I love that big cut, and it has performed well and held up well...so far. Fifth, I do believe the other heads in the pack would have performed exactly the same as the one I tested; it's due to the steel and the design. Sixth, if you look at used Solids for sale, the edges are usually really nicked up; it's just what they do. Overall, I still think it's a decent selection for a head...but I will not be buying any more of them. And I would not use the 125 on an elk, when I'm really wanting to capitalize on that one opportunity I may get to nail a big bull. But I would be much more confident in the 175 gr model. But I will say, if you're going to spend that much on a broadhead, then you're better off using an Iron Will. Hope that helps!
@benpietak3364
@benpietak3364 6 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks for the detailed response! I actually won the broadheads :) so the idea is to use them as long as I can. Realistically though, I love trying broadheads out so much I'll probably get others to try out as well - maybe even this season hahaha... If I was to spend a ton on some broadheads, I think I would go straight to the top and get S7 bishop single bevels. The Iron wills do look awesome to me and I love A2 steel (My woodworking chisels are A2 and I get them RAZOR sharp and they can take a beating though hard, hard wood while retaining a great edge). I wish someone would make a curved head like the solid, probably with a single bevel, but out of more impact resistant steel. How would you rank 440C steel with the others tested in this video? Anyway, thanks for the reply
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ben. 440C is a great steel for knives, but is not really optimal for broadheads because it can be a bit brittle. Most heads that use stainless go with 420 cause it tends to bend before it breaks.

This was a really old test of mine. My testing has evolved quite a bit since then. But I don't use bone (at least is my official process), because my testing is all based on consistency...in order to provide comparative data from one broadhead to another. Bone densities and geometries vary too much to provide accurate comparative value. That being said, I do sometimes shoot into elk scapula, and I use as many different heads as I can in my own hunting, to test on real animals.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting Kevin. I really like VPAs. They use a high carbon steel that is good. They do hold up fairly well--not like a bishop or an Iron Will, but they are at a much lower price point. I think they're a great option. I wish they made their three blades a bit shorter, like the Bishop is; the same designer worked on both and made some good improvements in flight and structural integrity with the Bishop, even apart from the pricey steel. But I would have no hesitation using a VPA.

That's a really good question. I put them both in the "excellent" flight category, of which I would only put a few fixed blade heads. The best three I've tested at very long range are the A-TAC, the Iron Will, and the Bishop Scientific Method. Of the four blade heads, I would give a very slight edge to the A-TAC. Thanks for watching Ryan. I really do appreciate it. You can see some of the long range testing vids I've done here on my channel.

Do you find an difference between the Bishop holy trinity and the annihilator broad head?

Yeah, really different designs. The Bishop has a wider cut and is a stronger steel.

Really? I am kind of a broadhead junkie so I research about every head on the market. These are some of the finest, most expensive ones made. I really do appreciate you watching and commenting. Perhaps you will enjoy some of my other vids here on my channel. I have nearly 80 and just uploaded a mountain lion bowhunt from last week.

Gave this a thumbs down..my reasoning. 1) didn't show what the broadhead looked like After the cinder block 2) where was the grouping test 3) cost difference 4) sharpness test...how well do they stay sharp

Could you please do an in depth review of the thorn Archery broadheads? I'm very interested in these, but cannot find much about them yet. I shoot a crossbow in the 390-395 fps range using a 22 inch black eagle executioner arrow. I've provided a link for you below. Thank you and God bless you sir! -Don thornarchery.com/

Thanks Donald. I will do them at some point. There are some things I like about them, like the very low profile in flight. But there are other things that do not really interest me. I am concerned about their durability. But I should test them. Next on my list is the Afflictor and the Dead Ringer. Thanks for watching and for the suggestion!

Well, as long as there are people who will pay for it, why not? Everyone's budget is so relative. I once heard that if Bill Gates were to drop a $100 bill, it would literally be a waste of his time to bend down to pick it up :)

I do not understand your reasoning about using manmade materials like plywood ,rubber and carpet as opposed to the thing we would actually be shooting at doesnt make any sense at all. and as far as a premium head based on price I think you're losing it buddy
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
Well, thank you for watching and commenting, Mike. I've tested over a hundred different heads and I am an engineer and have shot way over a hundred animals with my bow, so honestly, I'm not "losing it" :) I've used animal parts quite a bit in my testing, and whole animals and live animals in my hunts. But for comparative testing I never want to use mediums that are inconsistent. I've done and seen tons of tests like that and they make no sense. Animal bone densities vary and their geometries vary, and the angle at which they hit vary, so you cannot conclude anything about the head from those tests. At the same time, I understand that the tests I do are certainly far from "fool proof." They are simply providing a few more data points to consider in your broadhead selection.

Well, we all have different budgets. Look at the price difference in bows, trucks, cars, houses, etc. They're certainly not going after the blue collar hunter on a tight budget.
