Journey in the representations of the Mother Goddess in Sardinia, from the Neolithic to the Nuragic era, to discover the thousand votes of the Goddess of Life Generator but also Goddess of Death.
In many Domus de Janas of the 5th and 4th millennium BC in Sardinia numerous statuettes of female deities have been found in clay, alabaster, calcarenite, kaolinite, marble, bone or quartz sandstone,
some of which are carved in stones that are not found on the island.
Throughout Sardinia, over 130 prenuraghic statues have been found, of which only 5 are male figures, the others are all female, reflecting the dominant cult of the Goddess.
In a time ranging from 40000 to 10000 BC the Goddess is called "Venus in ancient style".
The figure is elongated and characterized by buttocks, thighs and shapely breasts.
An example of "ancient Venus" is the "Venus of Savignano" dating back to 33000 BC, a non-Sardinian relic but of great archaeological importance.
The oldest representation of the island is the "Venus of Macomer", an enigmatic and perhaps incomplete sculpture, as it has only one breast and the face resembles that of an animal.
Between 5000 and 3000 BC the Goddess is called "Goddess of Generation".
It appears much more defined, with abundant features, more outlined roundness and with a calm and reassuring expression.
The figures take a position bent towards the ground as if they were pregnant or in position to give birth, while at other times they appear seated while they hold the baby born in their arms.
Looking at the statuettes, the impression is that they want to be contemplated and that they are bearers of all abundance and of every good.
The Goddess of Generation represents the divine feminine, an encounter between heaven and earth, between the visible and the invisible, between the real and the transcendent.
From 3000 BC the Goddess is called "Goddess of Death" or "Cycladic Goddess" for the great similarity with other statues found in the Cyclades islands.
Spread in the Culture of Ozieri, the figures became flat and stylized in the shape of a T, with the lower part cone-shaped and light or white.
The goddess is very geometric, severe, with folded arms, square and without feet.
The head has a very pronounced nose and barely visible or absent eyes, reminiscent of a bird.
Feminine attributes are engraved or shaped to emphasize sex, but the forms are not abundant.
The Goddess of Death was a more abstract, transcendent goddess, close to the invisible and far from reality compared to the previous representation.
The most representative Sardinian statuette of the Goddess of Death is surely "La Bianca Signora" by Turrugiu, Senorbì.
After 1000 BC the Goddess is called "Madonna with child".
In the same period of diffusion of nuraghi and the use of copper, the Nuragic civilization represents the Mother Goddess in bronze sculptures.
She appears sitting in a neolithic throne, with the child sitting in her legs, sometimes a teenager.
Represents the mother of the Nuragic warriors, figure closer to the human, to the incarnate Goddess.
This figure recalls that typical of Isis of the ancient Egyptians, which in Christianity will become characteristic of the Madonna.
