SO... How did a cob elevator break during my hip surgery? The tip (about 3”) snapped and traveled into the muscle tissue, taking four surgeons 6 1/2 hours to retrieve. Who is responsible for maintaining this equipment? Just curious...
@BostonCareerInstitute3 жыл бұрын
Generally it is the sterile processing department that maintains the equipment. As for who's responsible for your injuries and suffering, this question is for a good lawyer.

@@BostonCareerInstitute Yes, I can tell they are worried what my next move will be. I just wanted to understand how it happened. It seems the tools would be checked/and or tested as they age. I was told this particular tool was 30 years old. How could that be? I am from an airline family. My husband in charge of the maintenance test flight program for a major commercial airline. There is a system of checks and double checks, to be sure we do not have metal fatigue in any of our fleet. Also, certain components are automatically replaced at a certain age. Surly there must be some oversight on equipment used in surgeries. I’m just still trying to wrap my head around how it could happen. Thank you for your kind reply.
@BostonCareerInstitute3 жыл бұрын
@@harborgirl8877 an elevator is a hunk of metal and has no moving parts. It is made out of martensitic steel and should not break under normal use conditions. At this time there is no guidance or means to test this type of surgical equipment for metal fatigue. Some of these instruments are used for much longer than 30 years without any issues. Go figure..... You never know, then again, the "O" ring on the space shuttle leaked and it blew up or a tile fell off and it disintegrated...

Hi Steve, I have a question: am I required to have some hands-on experience in a sterile processing department before I can take the examination test? I thought I had read somewhere that they require some number of hours to be worked in a sterile processing department in order to get certified of something like that. I'm nearly 60 years old. I live in California and I'm trying to formulate a very specific plan for becoming a sterile processing tech. I don't have much money and I can't afford to spend lots of money and time in school. Any advice you can give me will be much appreciated! Thanks so much Steve.
@BostonCareerInstitute8 жыл бұрын
there are different certifying agencies that you can pursue, iahcsmm and cbspd. iahcsmm requires 400 hours of clinical contact after you receive your provisional certification. cbspd does not require any clinical experience at all. check with your local hospitals and see which certification they will accept. you can watch my videos and take notes to get comfortable with the material, some People actually passed both tests just from watching and learning from the videos. you can also go online and purchase study materials to complement the videos. I'll be glad to answer your questions as you move along, you can do it yourself.

Thanks, Steve. So far I've watched around 15-20 of your excellent lectures. You are the one who made me want to pursue a career in sterile processing. Your teaching and your good advice are extremely valuable to me!

there are two certifying bodies in the field of sterile processing, iahcsmm and cbspd. iahcsmm requires 400 hours before or after you receive your provisional certification. cbspd does not require any clinical experience at all for their certification. my lectures on KZbin may be more specific to the iahcsmm certification but, it works just as well for cbspd. give both a try.

Hi Steve, thank you so much for your videos. They are very very helpful. You make these lectures so clear and easy to learn. There's a question I would like to ask: can a certified SPT become a surgical tech? If so, what is the best path? Thank you in advance.
@BostonCareerInstitute2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. There is no clear path to becoming a surgical tech from sterile processing. The only thing that will help you is the knowledge of surgical instruments. Having said that, I don't recommend this career path as it does not offer any real value financially nor professionally. The better way to go will be to invest one more year of schooling and get your RN. Much more lucrative and rewarding.

I'm interested in taking medical device reprocessing program but I was wondering if height would play an important role to be able to do the job well? I'm fairly short (4'11') and I'm worried that my height would hold me back or give me a hard time doing some of the tasks at hand.
@BostonCareerInstitute4 жыл бұрын
I doubt that your height will be an issue. For sure you may not be able to reach the top shelf somewhere but they have step ladders for that. Where there's a will there's a way. Good luck!!

The material of the sterilization wrap (what it's made from because I need to know more chemical information about it). Such as, the ability of the wrapping material to withstand under the strong conditions inside the high temp. sterilization machine, and if these conditions make it weaker after sterilization.
