I prepare 1-bromobutane from n-butanol and hydrobromic acid. Note: I used 17.5 mL HBr, not 18.5. For some reason I typed the wrong number.

Was the clear solution collected in the capsule after simple distillation bromobutane of 1-bromobutane? Great Video.

Yes, the clear liquid collected in the vial is 1-bromobutane. Thanks :)

why is the flask first cooled, then heated?

You have way too much liquid in your round bottom (overflow is not so fun) Neat video !

+The Chemical Workshop Yeah I know but as long as it is only boiled gently then noting bad should happen. One time I overfilled a flask in a reaction where gas was produced and it bubbled up nearly out of the condenser.

I wish I could do this, instead my interest was ruined from an explosion

What explosion?

Tom's Lab flash powder, I briefly uploaded it but I put a few grams of it in a ping pong ball and it blew a hole in the pavement embedded a chunk of aluminum foil into my arm and the cops showed up, they didn't know it was me tho

The chemistry Nerd holy crap, did you recover??

Spooky Wizard well the aluminum I dug out with a knife, there’s still a scar, the cops didn’t know it was me and I still have no interest, my parents threw out all my chemicals

I am confused, what the purpose of a reflux in this lab? thnx
@jtbmetaldesigns3 жыл бұрын
Well you have inorganic acids acting on an organic molecule namely butanol which is a slow reaction. So, reflux allows the liquids to be continuously heated and mixed to react without excessive evaporation

Please make a Video: Synthesis of 1-Chlorobutane with HCl.

Alkyl bromides are usually more useful than the chlorides, why do you want it? The procedure should be similar, although longer reflux would likely be necessary.
@justusfelix24417 жыл бұрын
All Alkyl bromides are cargenic or mutagen, but 1-bromobutane. But chlorides not.

Would you say there are any issues with using an oversized heating mantle? I've read it decreases their working life, because they might burn out.
@TomsLab7 жыл бұрын
Yes, being too big is generally not a good thing, they run hotter. With this particular one I am not as concerned, it is rated for very high temperatures. With my fiberglass ones I try not to use a flask that is less than half the size of the mantle.

Tom's Lab ok good to know. Cuz I bought a 500mL heating mantle hoping to use 250mL in it too

Make a coil, got a set of aluminum heating bases for RBs. Loads in box results variable hemispheres mantles. Wanna get a 5 liter or jacketed small stop messing with millions parts to break set up move. Wonder if diy heater pump fluid on web. Can’t afford all that cooling can manage. Bet thermal tolerant pump not cheap. Nylon probably need steel, ptfe will be specialty silly expensive.

Tom's Lab sure I know there is no way that anyone can copy this in such short amount of time. I wasn’t being sarcastic at all

It would be nice if your videos were longer! Wonderful job otherwise. 😉

I've been trying to make longer videos recently :)
