WOW! A major milestone is reached and it's time to glass her up! Going to be very interesting as well, to see the fiberglass layers take their place! I am getting most anxious for the "turning of the hull" when we get a proper look at this beauty! That will be a celebration for sure! 🥂. Then the really fun work begins and the interiors and top deck take shape!!!

Vera picking up washers really reminds me of 20 years ago when I was her age and my dad was building our house together with some hired carpenters. The carpenters where heavy smokers so me and my brother went around and picked up cigarette buds in a bucket. Dad gave us 20kr (2 dollars) for every full bucket!😅 It might sound weird but I loved helping out. And the pocket change where perfect for buying ice cream in the afternoon after a hard days work!

I look at this interesting episode and heard you say that you want to fill the gaps with thickend epoxy and then give the hull a primer coat. Suggestion: first 'soak' it with thin epoxy as it is so it can easily saturate the wood and then apply the tickened epoxy. Maybe that gives better bonding.. Keep up your amazing work!

That was a really interesting episode and I can well understand the angst of measuring and re measuring multiple times before committing to those relief cuts, especially at the transom. Vera is growing up very quickly and is showing all the signs of making a good apprentice on this boat project. Fantastic work, all round. 😀👍⛵️

I love watching the work, almost as much as watching your sailing adventures. Quick tip for routing recesses: first cut the two end channels, as you did, then run the router back and forth between the channels. That allows you to always have about half of the plate on a bearing surface. That will cut down on the divots that you ar needing to clean up with a plane.

I noticed on an episode of The Duracell Project, to avoid voids when laying fibreglass over a 90 degree bend, they used resin and thickener (I believe), squeezed it along the 90 degree edge then used a round tool to shape it into a smooth curve. This might work along your deck recess.

I think the port side is the best side of this boat. Discuss. The way the shop is set up the light from the windows always makes it look great. Now the other side is no slouch, but the other side is a beautiful work shop, vs a beautiful farm. And this is what I think about instead of studying. 😂

Around 5:20 it's mentioned coating and peelply so that you do not have to sand again. This caught my ear. In my quest for knowledge i have found that statement contentious when it involves strucural bonds.

When I see the Swedish Autumn fields and farmers gathering the last of their Summer’s yield, I am uplifted. It’s a reassuring, timeless and tranquil scene that forms the backdrop of your gargantuan efforts. It’s also a scene that’s repeated across Western Europe and then I think of the ghastly horrors occurring every minute just a few hundred miles to the East. Splintered and blasted stumps of thousands of trees tilted on the boundary of bomb cratered fields with a nation bravely fighting for its independence. The two scenes cannot be more different. It’s as though they’re on different continents, the fact is they are not. The West will need to hold to together to defend its borders against an angry Russian bear determined to overthrow and wreak havoc in its wake.

I have extensive experience building experimental fiberglass aircraft (man rated). This hull layup would cause me great anxiety. I don't know if you have done large layups before, but they can get out of hand quickly when the epoxy starts setting up. My biggest concern is how you're going get the fiberglass to lay across the bevel and then go inboard for that 2-4 inches (the part you routed out today). On a hand laid up aircraft we would rotate the fuselage 45 degrees so that all glass will maintain contact with the foam. Do one side, let it cure, then rotate and do the other. Obviously, you can't do this. Something to think about. - That epoxy pump (I have the same one) will not be able to keep up with the demands for this big layup! - Winters coming which will complicate the layup process. - You're going to need a lot of experienced people to help you. I have seen complete disasters when well-meaning help .... helped. A person experienced in shooting Chop or PrePeg wouldn't necessarily be much help. You need someone that understands fiber orientation and can work quickly. I'd recommend you connect with your local Experimental Aircraft Association chapter. There certainly should be competent help available. - Preplanning is imperative, have all your glass precut, hull/glass/epoxy at the right temperature. Lots of throw away gloves and razor blades! - ABOVE all have a huge roll of PEEL-PLY at the ready if this starts going south. Sure glad I'm going to be a spectator on this one. When you pull this off you're going to be a rockstar! Good Luck. 🙂

Please consider sanding after pulling off the peel ply. Or wait and use peel over top of the glass. It’s been proven that peel ply leaves residue that will weaken the next bonding. A light sanding should always follow peel ply. Especially important in this case seeing it be the initial bond between wood and glass.

Hi Ran guys. I'm also currently building a sandwich-construction boat (a 25ft catamaran). In my case, the core is a mixture of timber (oak, pine, and spruce) and plywood. One problem I've had while glassing the hulls is that, if the epoxy is applied to a sideways/vertical timber surface, there are small bubbles that are very hard or impossible to fill. If epoxy is applied to a flat/horizontal surface, you can just pop the bubbles and keep adding epoxy until there are no more bubbles. But, if there are bubbles on a vertical surface, popping them and applying more epoxy over and over doesn't always fill the hole. I just wanted to warn you about this now, so you can think about it before glassing. Maybe peel ply will solve the problem, or maybe your cedar will make fewer bubbles than my oak. Hope this helps.
