I saw Godspell in 1973. I sat there wide eyed in rapt attention as the songs spoke to my soul. I cried my eyes out at the end. I have loved it ever since i saw it and it still affects me the same way. Jesus loves me, and He loves you too dear listeners.

Me too, in high school. Saw it again off broadway 2 years later...will never forget. My next door neighbors granddaughter starred in it last year in our hometown...sang "Bless The Lord" to an ovation, she was outstanding! But the point is the message...God saves. Blessed Easter to you.

Victor Garber, the actor who played Jesus is gay and has never had children. Jeffrey Mylett who played Jeffrey died at the young age of 36 following complications of HIV/AIDS. Lynne Thigpen who played Lynne never married nor had any children so not very godly lives they led 👍

Think about a common-man play of this variety being done in the 19th century, 1920s or even 1930s. It would be inconceivable. This type of opulence and free-time was reserved only for the children of the elite privileged few. I am still a pilgrim looking for my way. In the last four years I have dealt with major health issues. First emergency spinal surgery. Then fighting to remission Stage 4A Ductal Prostate Cancer, though they said it probably will come back. Thought I was done with these battles. However, things are never that easy. They just found an egg sized brain tumor that will have to come out (to big for radiation). The songs from Godspell give me hope. Perhaps I will stop wondering and find grace before the end.🙏❤️

Whenever I've drifted from Christ I always find myself listening to this musicals songs (the film soundtrack specifically) whenever I start returning. I grew up watching this on DVD with my dad and loving it. It just makes me feel so spiritual and in Gods pressence anytime I listen to it. No matter how many times I've been burned by aspects of the human body of Christ it brings me peace knowing I can be immediately reminded with even just the sound of John The Baptists horn. I saw the movie in 1973 when I was 14. The next year I went to High School and to my surprise they were holding auditions for GODSPELL at my school! I was so nervous at auditions but I got the part of "Jeffrey" (the clown with the flute). The show was a huge success and we went on to perform it for chairty at the local 2000 seat music center. Biggest thrill of my life.

The Big Bang as an event, must have been caused. There must have then been a first cause, and it must have been uncaused as an infinite causal chain is impossible. This first cause that all things came from is what we call God. Not magic, not fairy tales, just straightforward logic. Atheism seems much more like the fairy tale if one must believe then that everything just appeared one day from nothing for no reason.

Depends on where you go. You still should know that you have to follow God's teachings; there is no way around that. The dividends are great if you do. Another thing is a church, religion whatever, can tell you of the things God disapproves, that will lead you away from God... damnation if you will. However, they should tell you with the next breath it will be God's call on damnation or salvation, not theirs. Doesn't mean they will accept your behavior either. Still what was fascinating about this era were the interpretations of the Bible. It shows what a difficult time people were having understanding the Bible. Yet they had a sincere desire to try to find God. Within 15-20 years of Godspell and JC Superstar people started teaching the Bible better and finally understanding it was written for a 1st Century Jewish audience, not 21st Century secular or agnostic one. Watch the movie The Case for Christ or read the book The Case for Jesus. Most of these movies and songs ('One Tin Soldier' and 'Signs') follow more of the parable of the sower. Many of these hopeful ideas fell among the weeds and rocks (secularism, etc). There is a lot of excellent stuff available today. You might have to do a lot of looking, but it is well worth the effort if you are truly serious. Vaya con Dios

@@danielharness7974 What I would point out in that intervening stuff that back in the 1st Century, everyone thought that Christ would return before the Apostles died. I have had a number of people come up to me and say, "Any day now..." I reply what if it isn't? Do you want to be telling the Lord that whatever you weren't doing was because you thought the Lord was going to come soon? There are number of Bible verses about that too! The era of the 1st Century, Jesus's ministry and His education of the Apostles, Christ's resurrection and ascension, and the Canons of Bible are fascinating history.

I remember when things started to change a bit in my little country (Protestant) church in the early-mid 70's. Suddenly, we didn't go strictly by the (hymnal) book...lol. I also remember them passing out the 'Good News' New Testament paperback Bibles to all the kids and teens. That was the one with the 'stick figure' drawings in it. We even had a folk rock group come to perform one Sunday morning, the bass player came up in line behind me in school the next day, I turned around and said "were you playing at my church yesterday?" He asked me to go steady! I was 15 and 5'2"...he was 16 and 6'7"...LOL

one Sunday during Lent in 1973 or 74 our priest walked down the aisle with a staff singing this song! I was so blown away as a teenager. A decade later (1987) he baptized my youngest child.

I saw the original version albeit by one of the traveling troupes, as a 13 year old girl at the Coconut Grove Play House, in Coral Gables FL, This was in 1970. Give or take a year or two. Rune Kapter (sp) , played the part of Christ. It was a Ponce deLeon Jr. High school field trip. It changed my life because of the music, the idea of the show, and that Christ could be portrayed in such a beautifully simple and joyous way! I was NOT brought up in church. My father was an atheist! My mother a lapsed Episcopalian. This sweet but powerful musical haunts me still @ age 60. I have always played music (guitar, singing) and “Take My Hand” has always been one of my favorites to sing when ever I have needed reminding that I’m not always alone. Whether in my mind or in my heart, I will never forget that day when I saw this. I still have the original vinyl album, and the playbill. Thank you GodSpell!

It's never too late Coastal. That's the Holy Spirit convicting you. Please don't be turned away. Know you are loved. Jesus died, for you. If it's someone who left a bad taste in your mouth, or a church that burned you, just know they are only human. They aren't what Jesus is all about. And if you still believe He died for you and you are a sinner saved by His grace, you are no less a Christian, just because you don't go to church or "practice". God never changes. He still loves you. Don't wait til something bad happens or you are breathing your last breath as I did, I was blessed enough to have a second chance 10/13/19. Please don't wait 🙏🙏💖

@@barefootanimist Don’t be concerned with having to rationalize or compare Faith to scientific reasoning. This was never the point of the Gospels, Bible, or (from my humble and limited study and education on the subject, through life) any Sacred Texts of any Faith. Nor get caught up in the Human (political) interpretations .. these are some argument that I often see most recent generations use as excuse to leave and often mock religion 💔.. sadly, this behavior is often accepted and encouraged, at least with Christianity. Thankfully, at least many other Faiths are more protected in social media, etc. I am not saying that’s your experience. This play tries to demonstrate pure, humble faith rather than competitive arguments of modern understanding.For example, how many folks under 40’s, 30’a 20’s make fun of “an old man in the sky” and Argue scientific reality and the ever present “If God exist why doesn’t he prevent suffering?” These are age old issues, nothing new The whole point of this play is that Faith is not meant to prove the earthly validity of Beliefs, but that Faith is pure, innocent, humble and there is no need to hold it up to modern life Faith and love is there for you, everyone is welcome God’s love is open to all

Xendava while the broadway version is good I still think the movie version is the best. Also I don’t like how they changed Tower of Babel in the new broadway version the older version of Tower of Babel is the better one, at least in my opinion.

The 2011 Broadway revival is amazing and has a cleaner hard rock sound that I love but I love all the versions (except Godspell Jr. because they basically ruined the second act)

I remember when I saw this on Broadway with my sister and her boyfriend. We saw it on Broadway during the summer of 1977. I have seen performed three other times. A theatrical group called Creative Ministries. So much fun!

I have notes in the margin of my Bible when there’s verses that were the basis for songs, or Jesus says something, or they act out a parable: GODSPELL. We have a song in our hymnal that is practically word for word list ALL GOOD GIFTS.

Open the service with it with members of the congregation starting t sing "prepare ye" from among them, all just leaving the crowd t join the other singers singers at the dias.... I'd love t organise a stage production of this in a massive service at AOG or something. It wld make more faith, more love. Just a wild guess, but isn't that what it all is t God?

I'm currently in a production of the 2012 revival. On our first day, we watched this. The last time I saw this scene I was just a little kid in the 70s. I hadn't heard this since. But the INSTANT I heard the melody I remembered. Just lying within me waiting to be awakened.
