Great video sir. I love watching videos like this. Everyone sets up their campsite differently and it's helpful to see how others do it, as well as inspire us to get out there and do it ourselves. Thanks for the video.

Lately I've been going out, I haven't actually done winter camping other than a few days during deer season at deer camp and that was either in a tent or camper. I think its fun and since learning all these new tips, Im more excited to try it overnight. Thanks for the info!

great info Chris, I've slept in my car for close to a year and a half and went threw two winters in Sedona, up at 7800-8500 feet I had one of those heaters I had a good one just when I went to bed I would turn it on for a few minutes to get the car warm then went into two 45 degree sleeping bags one inside the other I had padding on the passage's side car seat set almost flat. I had a wool blanket over me and those heavy duty space blanket. (this is before SOL rescue blankets these were tarps coated with a silver side they worked). it would get down to 15 degrees F. i would sleep just in a flannel nightgown with socks. I would used the heater in the morning to warm up the car and get dress. it worked also I had those insulated window shields on the front and back widows it kept the heat in. As for sleeping on the ground I lay my tarp down then my rescue blanket tarp silver side up. then my blankets then my sleeping bags then another rescue tarp covering me then the tarp. I was warm as toast. there. it was 1996-98. (winters on 96-97 and 97-98) but I loved it. I was in my mid 40's when I did that. I'm 62 now.

Lovin this one Chris! The next time you shoot one of these you guys should show the building phase of your camp. I think some people would love to see a how to demo and you guys can do different configs. I really love the digging the trench and filling the leaf idea bro. I have learned something new, THANKS.

I have that same camo tarp, it's come in pretty handy. Here is a quick tip for staying warm that I got from my buddy Innie Cakes, you will find it quite handy. Folks will use a heat source that is external to their insulation like a fire or some heater, this is counter productive as insulation is designed to keep heat in and by default will keep heat out... What we have done is take 32oz Nalgene bottles and fill them with boiling water and then drop them into an insulated sleeve right before bed. Then put this inside your insulated sleep system and not you have a none fire starting heat source inside and not outside your sleep system... It works great. I have a video titled "Nalgene Water Bottle Carrier for EDC (Everyday Carry) - TheSmokinApe" that shows the configuration... Ape

Hi Chris, I like the flexability of this set-up. Here in the UK with the heavy rain in Autumn and the fully saturated ground I find that a body trench often fills with water, which sucks the heat. But leaf-stuffing a bag or two as Will advises works well. Love the rake idea, i'm gonna get one soon! cheers Mate.

I don't have anything like that nice setup you have stowed in my car, but I do have a 0 degree sleeping bag. I'm thinking about getting a big tarp like that. I haven't tried it yet, but I think I could fold the seats down and sleep between the trunk and the backseat comfortably. Thanks for sharing Chris!

I've used the Little Buddy in my 22' Airstream trailer. It will keep it about 25-30 degrees above the outside temperature down to about 30F. I've done some coldish(35-40F) and wet camping down here in Texas with one as well in a small dome tent with a tarp over it. It was a heck of a lot warmer than without it.

I use the new improved military sleep system but with the older model woodland camo bivy. I slept in it 2 nights ago out in the open with sub freezing temps and was super warm. I hadnt thought about it but I guess having an old one would not be as good so Im happy I went with a new one.

it got down to around 45 here last night, i love those tarp clips and the $10.00 nail stakes . looks like oversized 10 penny nails .i use them too but steel, too heavy .but since its a car bag or car camping bag its ok . harbor freight here has the stakes, tarp clips, figure 9 clips, alot of economy gear! that rake is boss .car camping is what i have mostly done...a few backpack trips but not many. i have an older catalytic heater and i thought it was decent. i just love my boy scout tee pee tent but it has no hole in the top , rather a place to put the single pole needed to raise it . good video Chris , thanks . 425

How about a reflective sleep pad? The Mylar bubble wrap (refletics?) stuff. If you want to go cheep you can get a large sunshade for trucks/vans that's made from the same stuff. I'm going to try it out for hammock camping this fall. Coleman used to make a car survival heater called the survival cat that came in a nice bag w/Mylar blankets, matches and room for a propane bottle. It's only a 800btu catalytic type heater but I've used it in a small 2p tent at 15 degrees w/3" snow and it kept me warm with a -30 bag, a fleece blanket and two closedcell foam sleep pads. There was ice on the inside of the fly in the morning but I was warm inside my bag and fleece blanket with just shorts!

Having used the thermasilk bag liner myself, I cannot speak highly enough of them. The added bonus is that they are sheets for your sleeping bag to keep it from soaking up that lovely hiker funk as you sleep. Much easier to wash than a bag as well. Another suggestion would be a mylar liner of some sort at the bottom of your leafbed trench to reflect your body heat back up during the night.

Chris suggestions for your winter 10lbs test to keep warm, that I learned from my dad on the mn fall/winter camping trips. he always had 3 or 4 bricks we would put in the fire and take out and place one by are feet and one by the mid section in are tent before we went to bed. gave nice extra warmth most of the night. Will work with rocks most rocks to.

I think a space blanket behind the fire would help your system it has worked for me, I learned the hard way years ago. Started using rocks and wood but the real space blanket works best to reflect heat for me.

The type of Mr. Heater that you used works best if your elevated to at least as high as the heating element is. Like in a hammock, cot, etc.. I have four different Mr. Heaters and have tried them in various ways. The angle one works great in a hunting ground blind.

hey chris i think you should check out the REI sleep pads, i have one and i really like it. super comfy, super warm, it's just a little bulky and on the more expensive side. but i use it both backpacking and car camping and i love it. I get just as much sleep in the mountains as I do at home.

Gotta get me some tarp clips, or clothespins. I think the mr. Heater buddy may work better in shelter that is more enclosed as the heat will just escape, like an ice fishing shack or something. I have the larger 18000 BTU version which works great indoors.

I need to get some of those tarp clips for my winter setup. You get those at Harbor Freight as well? I also have a few of the thermarest foam pads with the reflective coating on one side. You might want to try one out next time if you don't feel like digging or raking. It's not like your going all natural anyway and in my opinion its a heck of a lot easier. Not saying it would be as comfortable just easier and you can just make that part of the kit.

I have one of those Reactor Extreme sleeping bag liners. Very pricey and makes very little difference at all to sleeping bag warmth. Bonus is it keeps my bag clean and I just have to wash the reactor liner, but as far as extra warmth, I think it is a far stretch to the added warmth it claims. Now I use a Marmot -13 C bag and put a Marmot Nano 13*C bag inside it and slip both of those into a snugpak gortex bivy bag on top of my thermarest prolite sleeping pad. Plenty warm. But I still use the reactor just as a bag liner to keep it clean. I spent the money so I use it. Would I but it again? Never

I came up with a tarp kit that had poles, tarp, ridgeline, more cordage, tie downs, aluminum stakes etc. and the evolution to your system is the logical next step. I like the sat-com bag a lot but it is too short for the poles.... starting to puzzle that out. I am using a cordura bag for folding chairs and it is sufficient but not as efficient as it could be.

Chris, A couple things I was wondering...maybe if you used a tarp with a reflective side down the heater might be more efficient and digging the leaf bed, you want to make sure your not in a low spot or at the bottom of a hill, If you get a downpour it would probably fill with water pretty quick. Also a great idea for keeping warm and cooking in a shelter is the video by Reallybigmonkey1 its called the snake hole pit shelter...check it out.....its pretty clever!

+Scott Wilson that's not what I ment at all. man your just looking for an argument. I ment, if you have this kit in your car as a car survival kit, which would mean you have your car in the said survival situation. it would be smart to stay in the car to await help and would be a life saver to have the kit. but if you needed to travel to get help it helps to have a portable shelter. I was not suggesting making a video from inside the truck. I was simply talking theoretical survival situations and practical use for this car survival kit.

From your tone it sounds like the all knowing keyboard wizards have been getting to you. The same guy's that go into the woods that one time now they're an expert. Just seems like your getting tired of explaining yourself. Love the vids and your honest opinions. I have two of those Sea to Summit sleeping bag liners and have tried them out on many backpacking trips. Save your money because they don't add that much warmth. Even the the reactor extreme with it's claimed 25°+ will maybe add 5°. There is just not enough material thickness to trap the heat from your body. It's better just to get a sleeping bag rated for a lower temp. Ok hope I don't sound like one of those all knowing wizards now! lol It's just experience.

I think if you dug a trench to sleep in here in NZ it would fill with water & be damp as, I'd rather build up off the ground if I can't sleep in the car

+PREPAREDMIND101 Hi Chris I just used the record audio feature on my cell phone and put the mic part next to speaker and recorded the intro part then set it as my ringtone. Very low tech but I like it. Love your vids man, was watching them before I even made an account. Glad to see Tac on here too, he is DA MAN!

Do some people really gripe about the things you've tried to shoot down (or preemptively stopped)? I find this historical that you might actually have to deal with that. unfortunate non the less

Curious. Why doesn't anybody ever use the lowly hot water bottle? A 2 litre pot of water on the fire for 10 minutes gives you up to 4 hours of radiant heat if you wrap them in a towel and toss them into your escape Bivvy. ( Almost simmering is perfect so you don't break down the bag ) I'm a Princess so I toss 2 or 3 of them in there so it's still comfortable while I cycle through reheating them. Cost - 6.00 Canadian each bag. . Try it if you haven't yet. It's better than that furnace and free to operate. Hot rocks work good too but don't get them from a River. They explode as the water inside evaporates and expands and make a big dusty mess. Also it's a good idea to cook them in tin foil so they don't soot up your gear and don't cook too long or they'll burn through your sleeping bag. Living the frozen dream up in Canada . Love the leaf bed idea.

the angle of that heater is wrong to me.....heat rises anyway....why build it facing up? keeps the heat above you, instead of on you....

I kinda like the idea in general, but if we're talking about something small and inexpensive that can be kept in a car and used as a vehicle kit, (as opposed to a system that has to be packed in) I'm going in this direction: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKO1pH6hZpJppck Simple, cheap, 30 second set-up, totally enclosed, spacious enough for two, waterproof and somewhat secure from the wind, (whereas a tarp is a sail without a mast). Throw in a ground tarp as he recommends, and for around $150 you have a relatively bullet proof shelter, sans most of the work.
