In this video, I describe what to do to get a smoothly finished double twist core for a quirt. I talk about how to use the calipers to achieve a consistent width down the entire length of a core and how to wrap them for a nice finish with electrical tape. This is important to achieve a slight degree of waterproofing.

Really really great videos would love to see more Vidal branding! How long do you calculate your rawhide strings? I can’t find anything about so I don’t know how much ft I need to buy to start

Has anyone experimented with using heat shrink instead of electrical tape?

That's a great question! I don't personally know anyone that's tried it, but it may be worth experimenting with.

@@RawhideEli I just thought it would be an ultra smooth finish and would eliminate the adhesive bleed in hot climates. www.mcmaster.com/heat-shrink-tubing

@@trevormcclurkin3984 Yeah, that makes sense. One thing I would be concerned with is longevity. Do you know how long that stuff typically lasts?

Have you used any braided cores? I like x2 twisted cores for 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2. But I like a 4 plat core for 5/8 and a 6 plat core for 3/4. Just dry them under tension, same as a twisted core. The braided cores create a lot of spring. Still need to be taped though.

Yessir, I do braid my cores, and it sounds like we finish them out the same way. My social media pages show some of them.
